Kiulu school poised to lead edu-tourism

KIULU (May 28): SMK Tun Fuad Stephens here is well-positioned to take the lead in pioneering edu-tourism efforts as the area is fast becoming a popular summer camp destination, said Kiulu assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
The Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Enviornment Minister said through such efforts students of the school could take an active role in showcasing their hometown to visitors, especially foreign students.
He said the school has the potential to become the main driver of such programmes, especially since it is the only secondary school in the area.
'With Kiulu already known as a destination for summer camps involving foreign students, there is great potential to develop edu-tourism programmes that involve our local students directly in showcasing their village,' he said at the school's Kaamatan celebration on Wednesday.
According to the Kiulu Tourism Association, Kiulu hosted 37 summer camp groups from United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand involving 851 students last year and first four months this year.
Joniston, who also chairs the Sabah Tourism Board, said one idea worth exploring is Kiulu Discovery Day concept, where schools in the area collaborate to host visiting students for immersive community-based learning experiences.
Joniston said the concept aligns with ongoing efforts to position schools in Kiulu as eco-tourism schools to empower students as ambassadors of their environment and culture.
The objective is to allow local students to act as guides and community ambassadors, giving visitors a first-hand experience of Kiulu's nature and rural lifestyle through hands-on activities.
'Our students can learn to become storytellers, which will help build their confidence and deepen their appreciation for their identity and culture, especially now that the school has established a tourism club,' he said.
He added that senior students at SMK Tun Fuad could also mentor primary school students during these programmes, giving them early exposure to leadership and teamwork.
Joniston stressed that the involvement of all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, the Education Department and tourism agencies, is essential to ensure such programmes can be fully realised and sustained.
'This initiative aligns well with our state and national tourism goals, especially as we head towards Visit Malaysia 2026.
'We should consider launching programmes that have the potential to involve schools or visitors from outside Sabah to further support our Explore Sabah campaign,' he said.
Joniston also noted the strong interest in tourism among Kiulu students, as shown by the participation of over 100 students from the school in a youth tourism programme organised by the Sabah Tourism Board and the Kiulu Tourism Association earlier this year.
He expressed hope that students will continue to embrace their cultural identity and view education not just as a personal journey, but as a tool to uplift their community and build a brighter future.
In the event, Joniston also launched the SMK Tun Fuad Stephens welfare fund.

Short-term rental rules welcomed

Grateful for clarity: (From left) Teo and Chia. JOHOR BARU: Hoteliers are looking forward to the government's guidelines for short-term rental accommodation (STRA), expressing hope they can be implemented before Visit Malaysia 2026. They lauded the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry's plan for STRA operators to obtain licences and hope the commitment can be translated into action as soon as possible. Johor Malaysia Budget and Business Hotel Association chairman Jarod Chia said this was not the first time the ministry had announced this plan. 'In the past, we were also told that guidelines to regulate STRA would be introduced 'soon', but they never materialised. 'I'm glad the ministry has finally expressed its commitment to address this issue and hope that the timeline will go as planned. 'It's even more important for them to do so now since we are just a few months away from Visit Malaysia 2026,' he said in an interview. Chia said the guidelines will ensure travellers enjoy a safe and comfortable stay while visiting the country. 'A single bad incident could cause huge damage to our tourism campaign, and regulating STRA is one of the ways to prevent this from happening. 'It also allows operators to legalise their premises and maintain a standard on par with hotels,' he said. Echoing the sentiment, Johor Malaysian Association of Hotels chairman Ivan Teo said safety and security should be one of the main aspects highlighted in the regulations. 'The fact that the government is highlighting this issue again shows it is making moves to improve the tourism sector, including supporting industry players. 'We hope this can be done before Visit Malaysia 2026, as STRA operators should also be given some time to make the necessary preparations to obtain a licence,' he said. On Aug 6, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said STRA operators will soon be required to obtain business licences from their local authorities before registering as tourist accommodation premises. He said the requirement was agreed upon by the ministry and the Housing and Local Government Ministry to improve regulatory control over STRA and tourist lodging premises.

(Wikipedia pic) PUTRAJAYA: Electric garbage trucks will be deployed at major tourist destinations in Kuala Lumpur such as Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Alor to modernise public cleansing and cut carbon emissions, says housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming. Nga said the initiative by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation was part of a broader reform under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions by 2035. Advertisement The initiative will include midnight cleaning shifts to avoid disrupting traffic, as well as weather-friendly operations and 'deep cleansing' with water jets for dust-free streets. 'We will start with tourist destinations, as next year is Visit Malaysia 2026. The initial focus will be on strategic locations in the capital such as Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Alor, and other key areas,' Nga said after launching the ministry's Semarak Jiwa Merdeka campaign here today. Nga said the midnight cleaning programme, to be piloted in high-traffic tourist areas in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, had proven successful in several developed cities in China such as Shanghai and Shenzhen. On July 31, he said in Parliament that the 13MP would introduce major changes to the national cleaning system, including the use of electric vehicles for night cleaning and dust-free road initiatives. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
