‘We don't have much influence' – Tottenham star breaks ranks as he labels Ange Postecoglou sacking ‘strange'

The Sun11-06-2025
MICKY VAN DE VEN has branded Tottenham's brutal axing of Ange Postecoglou as a 'strange decision'.
Postecoglou was shown the door just 16 days after ending the club's 17-year trophy drought with Europa League glory in Bilbao.

The North Londoners are very close to appointing Brentford boss Thomas Frank as his successor.
Yet the decision to axe the Aussie is understood to have left many of the players disappointed given the success they enjoyed in Europe.
And while on international duty with the Netherlands, centre-back Van de Ven, 24, said: 'As players, we don't have much to say about that.
'Of course, he was the first coach in a long time to win a trophy and have success at Spurs.
'So, if you look at it that way, it's definitely a strange decision.
'But it's a decision made by the club, and we don't have much say in that, so we'll see what happens next.
'We're of course seeing some rumpus about the Brentford manager likely becoming the next one.
'So yes, it's a decision by the club that we don't have much influence over.'
Daniel Levy decided to wield the axe after an awful Premier League campaign which saw Spurs finish 17th.
They lost a club-record 22 league games, which was the first time ever a Prem team has managed that and NOT been relegated.
BBC star shares shock theory as to why Tottenham waited exactly 16 days after Europa League win to sack Ange Postecoglou
And yet Postecoglou ended the club's silverware curse with their Europa win, which also got them back into the Champions League.
Most of the Spurs squad have been effusive in their praise of Postecoglou on social media following his sacking and what he did for them as players and as people.
Van de Ven, who missed much of the league campaign through injury, added: 'I think a lot of players had a good relationship with him.
Ange Breaks Silence On Tottenham Sacking
ANGE Postecoglou issued a statement just moments after being axed.
It read: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride.
"The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime.
"Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.
"That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.
"There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible.
"We have also laid the foundations that means this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success.
"I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters.
"I know there were some difficult times, but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on.
"It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis.
"And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years.
"A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special.
'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.'
'And of course, like I said, he was the first coach in a long time to bring success to Spurs.
'That also shows he has a certain quality. It also means he has a winning mentality - one hundred per cent.
'So from that point of view, you'd naturally say it's strange that he was sacked.
'But of course, what we showed in the league was unacceptable.
'That, however, could have been due to several factors… it wouldn't have just been the coach.'

The defender worked his way through the academy ranks and became the B team's captain. Fraser was handed his first team debut in a 5-2 victory over Dundee at Ibrox in May last year and signed a contract extension the very next day. He went on to make five first team appearances for the Gers in all competitions, including an appearance against Tottenham in the Europa League last season. Fraser spent the second half of last season on loan at Livingston and played 23 times across all competitions. He was a key figure as Livi sealed an instant return to the Scottish Premiership by winning the play-offs. Fraser returned to Ibrox at the end of his loan spell and was in and around the first team during pre-season, and was also named in the Gers' initial Champions League qualifying squad. But he's now heading back to the Championship after sealing a move to Dunfermline Athletic on Friday. This time, the move is a permanent one. After linking-up with Neil Lennon's side, Fraser said he felt it was now time to play regular football and "show that I'm more than capable of holding my own." Billy Dodds on turning down Celtic for Rangers and surviving relegation scare with Aberdeen Now that the dust has settled, Fraser has taken to social media to reflect on a 16-year spell at Rangers. In an emotional Instagram post, Fraser said he's "proud" of everything he achieved and says he lived out his dream of playing for his boyhood club. Fraser said: "Almost 16 years at the club. A club I grew up dreaming and believing I could play for every single day as a young kid. "To say I have went onto achieve this makes me so proud. "From the age of seven at the very start of the academy all the way to now, I've given absolutely everything I could possibly give everyday to the football club. "I've experienced some amazing highs but some tough lows but I've always kept the same attitude no matter what. "I want to say a massive thank you to all of the staff in the academy, first team and behind the scenes who I have worked with and under. "You have worked tirelessly with me over the years to help me become a better player and person. "Secondly a thank you to all of the teammates I shared the changing room and pitch with. "You all pushed me to the maximum to help me become better. I've made friends for life because of this. "And of course a big thank you to the fans of Rangers. Thank you for all your support. I'll always be very grateful. "The club has been almost my whole life so a very long journey with many highs and lows but I leave very proud of what I achieved and with my head held high. "I fulfilled my dream of playing for the club I grew up supporting and watching from the stands. "I wish the club the very best in future. "Thank you Rangers Football Club." A reinforcement has now arrived, however, with the Gers sealing a loan deal for Jayden Meghoma. The 19-year old has joined the Light Blues from Brentford for the season. Meghoma previously worked under Russell Martin at Southampton before moving to the Bees in a £10million last year. Jayden Meghoma explains Rangers loan transfer decision

The Brentford left-back sealed a loan move to Ibrox for the rest of the season, confirmed by the club as their latest signing yesterday evening. It comes with Jefte on the verge of joining Palmeiras for £6 million and the expectation Ridvan Yilmaz will also move on. Youngster Robbie Fraser just joined Dunfermline too, leaving the club short of options in that area. The manager worked with Meghoma before at Southampton and he had a spell on loan at Preston North End last season. The 19-year-old loved the playing style Martin adopts and says his coaching methods are still fresh in the memory, which will equip him for the season. On top of that, Rangers as a club and its history helped persuade him to head north. 'I'm very excited," he told Rangers TV. "It's a fantastic club and I know a lot about its history. Read more: 'Knowing the manager was probably the biggest influence coming here. I know Russell from my time at Southampton, I think he's a fantastic coach and I understand the way he plays, so I think for me to get integrated into the team, it'll be quite quick. 'It makes you feel more at ease because you know how he plays. He's a manager that I'm familiar with. 'All the learnings I've taken from him over the past, I can still remember. It's fantastic for me to get integrated straight away and understand how to play his style of football. 'Russell handed me my debut at Southampton. I think it was against Gillingham in the Carabao Cup. I felt comfortable straight away. 'The way he played, there's a lot of possession-based football and it's something I really enjoy, so I thank him for that. 'When the deal was presented to me, I just thought straight away it's a fantastic opportunity for myself and my family. I was always going to be here because it's an amazing club and a fantastic club that has so much history. So, yeah, it was always Rangers. 'The main thing is results. If I can add to that, it'll be amazing.'

Micah Richards tells Arsenal to sign £80m star after Manchester United win

Micah Richards has named the signing Arsenal should make to 'solve a lot of problems' after their opening Premier League victory over Manchester United. Mikel Arteta's side, who are expected to challenge for the title yet again after three successive second-place finishes, began the 2025-26 campaign with a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford. The Gunners were far from at their fluent best but were gifted an early goal following a mistake from United back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and then withstood significant pressure from the hosts to return to north London with the three points. Ex-England defender Richards described it as a 'massive win' for Arsenal and said the team's strength in depth was impressive after Arteta used Myles Lewis-Kelly and Jurrien Timber as second-half substitutes. The only real weakness Richards saw in Arsenal was at left-wing, where Gabriel Martinelli started before being replaced by ex-Chelsea star Noni Madueke, who prefers to operate off the right. Richards believes Arsenal would benefit from the addition of another left-winger before the transfer deadline and says signing Real Madrid's Rodrigo would 'solve a lot of problems'. Arteta expressed interest in signing Rodrygo earlier in the summer but the Gunners are not currently pursuing the Brazilian, who is valued at around £80m. Arsenal were interested in Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze, who could have played on the left, but it is their north London rivals Tottenham who are closing in on £68m deal. 'I still think Arsenal are a left winger short or a left forward short,' former Manchester City defender Richards said on The Rest is Football podcast. 'But Arsenal's bench today was so strong with Lewis-Skelly and Timber coming on. Mikel Arteta can change the full-backs now and it doesn't affect the team, the quality doesn't go down. 'That will really help them throughout the season. I prefer Noni Madueke on the right so I just look at that position on the left-hand side and if they could sort that. 'They were linked with Rodrygo and that could solve a lot of problems for them. 'But it's a massive win for Arsenal away from home and just gives them that momentum at the start of the season.' While Arsenal were not at their best at Old Trafford, Arteta was full of praise for the 'resilience' his team showed to beat an improved Manchester United. More Trending 'We came here away and won which is a big result. We were clearly not at our best,' the Gunners boss told BBC's Match of the Day. 'We attacked the box and we reacted well to unusual mistakes. The team reacted time after time in an incredible way. Very proud of that because that is why we got the opportunity to win the game. 'We showed a resilience and a will to win. They put you on the ropes here, you will have to have moments when you suffer. To find a way to win at this ground, I'm very happy with the team.' Arsenal will look to make it two wins from two next Saturday when Premier League new-boys Leeds United visit the Emirates Stadium. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
