‘We don't have much influence' – Tottenham star breaks ranks as he labels Ange Postecoglou sacking ‘strange'

MICKY VAN DE VEN has branded Tottenham's brutal axing of Ange Postecoglou as a 'strange decision'.
Postecoglou was shown the door just 16 days after ending the club's 17-year trophy drought with Europa League glory in Bilbao.

The North Londoners are very close to appointing Brentford boss Thomas Frank as his successor.
Yet the decision to axe the Aussie is understood to have left many of the players disappointed given the success they enjoyed in Europe.
And while on international duty with the Netherlands, centre-back Van de Ven, 24, said: 'As players, we don't have much to say about that.
'Of course, he was the first coach in a long time to win a trophy and have success at Spurs.
'So, if you look at it that way, it's definitely a strange decision.
'But it's a decision made by the club, and we don't have much say in that, so we'll see what happens next.
'We're of course seeing some rumpus about the Brentford manager likely becoming the next one.
'So yes, it's a decision by the club that we don't have much influence over.'
Daniel Levy decided to wield the axe after an awful Premier League campaign which saw Spurs finish 17th.
They lost a club-record 22 league games, which was the first time ever a Prem team has managed that and NOT been relegated.
BBC star shares shock theory as to why Tottenham waited exactly 16 days after Europa League win to sack Ange Postecoglou
And yet Postecoglou ended the club's silverware curse with their Europa win, which also got them back into the Champions League.
Most of the Spurs squad have been effusive in their praise of Postecoglou on social media following his sacking and what he did for them as players and as people.
Van de Ven, who missed much of the league campaign through injury, added: 'I think a lot of players had a good relationship with him.
Ange Breaks Silence On Tottenham Sacking
ANGE Postecoglou issued a statement just moments after being axed.
It read: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride.
"The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime.
"Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.
"That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.
"There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible.
"We have also laid the foundations that means this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success.
"I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters.
"I know there were some difficult times, but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on.
"It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis.
"And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years.
"A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special.
'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.'
'And of course, like I said, he was the first coach in a long time to bring success to Spurs.
'That also shows he has a certain quality. It also means he has a winning mentality - one hundred per cent.
'So from that point of view, you'd naturally say it's strange that he was sacked.
'But of course, what we showed in the league was unacceptable.
'That, however, could have been due to several factors… it wouldn't have just been the coach.'

Ex-Rangers boss 'close' to surprise new job with EPL giants

The Dutchman spent just under a year in charge at Ibrox, leading the club he turned out for as a player to the 2022 Europa League final. Read more: Liverpool are now 'close' to appointing Van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff, claims The Athletic. He will replace his fellow countryman John Heitinga, who recently left Anfield to take on the role of head coach at Eredivisie outfit Ajax. Van Bronckhorst spent a brief spell in charge of Besiktas after leaving Rangers before taking up a role on UEFA's Executive Committee. He now appears set to move to Liverpool as the club looks to build on a title-winning campaign. Speaking in April of this year, Van Bronckhorst was asked whether he'd like to become the permanent manager of Rangers once again: "No," he said live on TNT Sports. "For me, that book is closed. "Maybe as a fan, but no." Rangers recently appointed Russell Martin as the club's new head coach following a change of ownership this summer. He officially got down to business earlier this week ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Tottenham to name Thomas Frank as head coach after agreeing deal with Brentford

Tottenham Hotspur have finally struck an agreement with Brentford to make Thomas Frank the clubs next head coach, it is understood. Spurs quickly set their sights on Frank after Postecoglou was sacked last week – only 16 days after he secured Europa League success – and made an official approach to Brentford on Monday. Discussions between Tottenham and Brentford initially centred on Frank's current terms at the west London club, which were set to run until the summer of 2027 and contained a release clause reportedly in the region of £10million. Further talks were required over which backroom staff Frank would take to Spurs but, after days of negotiations, a deal was struck with Brentford on Thursday, it is understood. Highly-rated Brentford first-team coach Justin Cochrane is set to follow Frank to Tottenham and in the process return to the club where he started his coaching journey. London-born Cochrane has been part of Frank's backroom staff since 2022, after he initially developed as a coach in Spurs' youth-team before a spell at Manchester United. Cochrane, 43, has earned a reputation as one of the brightest coaches in England and earlier this year joined Thomas Tuchel's coaching staff for the national team alongside his role at Brentford under Frank. Frank would take over a Spurs side which won a trophy for the first time since 2008 with victory in the Europa League final last month but finished 17th in the Premier League. The ex-Brondby boss has transformed Brentford during his seven-year spell in charge, with promotion from the Championship in 2021 followed by him establishing the club as a Premier League regular despite a modest budget. Christian Eriksen, who played under Frank at Brentford and starred during a seven-year spell at Spurs, backed his compatriot to be a success at his former club. 'I think he is the right coach for Tottenham,' Eriksen told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. 'I have had Thomas at various times and I think he is the perfect match for Tottenham, and it would be great if Thomas takes on that challenge. 'His personality, his way of playing and his way of being. And the club considering where they were last season – they won a trophy of course – but they are in the process of building something up, and I am sure that Thomas is a good man to bring in.'

Giovanni van Bronckhorst set to join Liverpool's backroom staff

Liverpool are close to appointing the former Netherlands international Giovanni van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff. Van Bronckhorst will replace John Heitinga, who left the Premier League champions to become head coach at Ajax, and take his place in Arne Slot's new-look think tank. The 50-year-old has had recent spells as a manager at Rangers, guiding them to the Europa League final in 2022 where they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt, and then Besiktas before his dismissal in November. Van Bronckhorst began his managerial career at Feyenoord, Slot's former club, and won the Eredivisie title in 2017. That was a success Slot emulated in 2023. He will form part of the backroom team alongside Sipke Hulshoff and Aaron Briggs as Liverpool look to defend their title success next season. Liverpool's triumph owed much to the detailed level of coaching that Slot and his staff oversaw, eliciting improvement from established stars such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk as well as players such as Ryan Gravenberch. Heitinga acted as a 'coaching mentor' to Gravenberch, with the player crediting him with helping him take a step forward in his career. The way Slot works means that Van Bronckhorst will also take on similar responsibilities. As well as a coaching background, Van Bronckhorst brings with him a wealth of experience from a storied playing career which began at Feyenoord before spells at Barcelona and Arsenal among other clubs. MARVIN IBO GUENGOER/GES SPORTFOTO/GETTY IMAGES Van Bronckhorst, a left-back, won the last of his 106 caps for the Netherlands in the World Cup final in 2010, playing alongside Heitinga as the Dutch lost 1-0 to Spain in Johannesburg. Meanwhile, Liverpool are continuing talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Florian Wirtz and also Bournemouth for Milos Kerkez. Heitinga wants to take goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, who made his Liverpool debut against Crystal Palace in a league game last season, to Ajax on loan.
