
Britons are drinking sub-par tea - and this family firm wants to change that
One family-run tea company say that Britons are unknowingly drinking tea that isn't as good as they think.
In fact, many teabags are full of tea dust and stalk, rather than leaves.
Birchall Tea, which launched in 2019, says it is on a mission to change the way the nation drinks their morning cuppa.
It says that starts with showing households what goes into their teabag.
But will Britons really give up their daily mug of Yorkshire Tea or PG Tips for a pricier but - Birchall claims - tastier alternative?
We visited Birchalls' Wiltshire base to find out why it thinks they should.
Steeped in history
Birchall Tea's managing director Daniel Graham has tea in his DNA.
Graham's great-great-grandfather was part of the early tea cultivation in Darjeeling, India and is buried there.
His brother runs Birchall's sister business - a bulk-buying tea business that ships out of Mombasa, Kenya - while Graham has worked in tea for years.
It might be Britain's drink of choice, but Birchall says consumers know very little about what goes in their brew.
A Yougov survey commissioned by the company found that 87 per cent of consumers said they did not think tea originally comes from Africa, now the world's largest exporter of black tea.
Fresher soil in East Africa makes it a prime spot, as higher altitudes and lower temperatures mean the bushes grow slowly and theoretically lock in more flavour.
More shockingly, 10 per cent thought it might come from Yorkshire or elsewhere in the UK.
It therefore not surprising that we might not know a good tea from a not-so-good one.
What goes in to a good cup of tea?
Every tea company has its own process, but tea grading means the leaves can be evaluated based on their quality and condition.
The two top leaves in the bud are softer and generally of a higher grade than offshoots and stalks of the plant, which, when processed, can leave dust.
Birchall says that the dominance of the teabag means suppliers can get away with putting in much lower-grade leaves.
Before Tetley introduced the teabag to the UK in the 1950s, consumers would buy loose-leaf tea.
'If you're choosing fruit, you know not to pick a bruised one,' says Graham. 'Back then, you just knew tea should be black and there shouldn't be any brown stalks. The tea companies couldn't get away with it.'
Birchall shows the difference between its 'main-grade' hand-picked tea and other leading brands. The difference is stark, as shown in the picture below.
Birchall's tea is on the far left with black leaves, while large brands are in the middle and of lower quality with more dust.
The lowest quality is a supermarket's own brand that is full of brown stalk and tea dust. The darker and more distinct - or bigger - the leaves, the better the quality, says Birchall.
When brewed, the quality difference is even more apparent with Birchall's producing a golden cup of tea, while it claims the nearest competitor's is far duller.
A blind taste test at British Airways saw it come away with the coveted prize of being the airline's only tea provider.
'Our tea tasters try 5,000 teas a week'
By now, though, most consumers who aren't huge tea enthusiasts won't know the difference, especially if they've stayed loyal to the same brand for years.
The difference, Birchall says, is in the taste.
'Tea's not going to change someone's life,' says Graham, 'but if it improves that moment even a tiny bit, you're onto a winner. That's why the taste has to be right.'
He says this is why some brands, which he describes more as marketing than tea companies, come and go.
The company has already collected a long list of awards, including multiple Great Taste awards, and the prestigious 'Leafies' award for the Grift Rift English breakfast tea.
The secret to that taste is in part because of the bulk buying business, which means the company gets 'first dibs on the best tea'.
Birchall has a team of 'master blenders' based in Mombasa, who taste around 5,000 teas. The tea tasters will have had to taste a million cups of tea as part of their training, which takes around five years to complete.
'They really are amazing,' says Dan. 'You can put a cup of tea in front of them and they can tell you which tea estate it's from, forget which country.
'Sometimes they can tell you which side of the plantation it's come from and they can pick up if there's been an issue in the factory.'
Just 1 per cent is deemed good enough to go into Birchall's teas, equivalent to tea from around 30 to 40 estates.
Do we need to pay more for better tea?
Birchall is in a unique position to offer its quality tea for a lower price than some of the boutique teas. This is mainly because it uses fewer middlemen.
However, its packs of 80 teabags retail for £5.50, equivalent to around 7p a serving, which is significantly higher than some of the supermarket own brands, that are around 2p a serving.
Birchall says there needs to be a shift among consumers to pay more for their tea.
'We really try not to talk about a packet of tea because then you're talking about £2.50 or £5.50 and that sounds a lot,' says Dan.
'You're talking about 7p a drink. If you went to the pub and were able to buy everyone a round for £5.50, you'd do it every day.'
For Graham, it's not just about paying for better taste but about getting the best deal for everyone in the supply chain.
'The person picking the tea leaves has to pick 5 kilos of green leaf to make a kilo of black tea, so you need about 1.5 kilos of green leaf to make a packet of tea.
'It takes a skilled tea picker all day to pick 30 kilos.
'That person needs to be paid. Everyone complains quite rightly that they're not paid enough, but if you're not paying enough here in your local supermarket, that's part of the problem.
He also points out that the tea needs to be processed in a factory - 'a huge capital investment' - before it's fermented, dried, packed and shipped.
When it reaches Birchall's factory in Wiltshire, it's put into a teabag machine which costs around €1 million, and distributed.
They hope that tea will start to have the same premium attached to coffee or craft beer.
It's an admirable intention, but also a tough ask - particularly as the average price of tea has increased by 29 per cent to £2.64 over five years, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.
At the same time, there is a decline in black tea consumption across the board, according to Birchall, and there is concern that climate change could threaten the industry.
Currently, tea grown in East Africa does not use pesticides because the location of the plantations is cool enough that bugs don't like it.
However, if the temperature increases, 'no one knows what it means,' says Dan. 'The concern is bugs, new pests… who knows. It could cause real problems.'
Even so, the tea company hopes that a small shift from 2p to 7p pence a teabag, paired with more of an understanding of what's in our tea, will help.
Their recent growth - 20 per cent in the last year alone - suggests there is an encouraging shift in consumption habits.
More importantly, now that it is British Airways' only tea provider, they can ensure their tea is put in front of consumers.
Birchall will hope that the taste of its tea will do the talking, and convince people to pay as much for their tea as they do for their coffee.

Chancellor will have to raise taxes despite lower borrowing, say economists
Chancellor Rachel Reeves will still need to raise taxes in the autumn budget despite lower-than-expected Government borrowing last month, economists have warned. Official figures released on Thursday showed that UK state borrowing slowed to £1.1 billion in July, providing some relief for the Chancellor. The Office for National Statistics said the figure, which was £2.3 billion less than the same month a year earlier, is the lowest July borrowing figure for three years. It came after a rise in self-assessed income tax and national insurance payments helped increase tax receipts for the month. July borrowing was lower than the £2 billion figure predicted by a consensus of economists. Borrowing for the first four months of the financial year stood at £60 billion, £6.7 billion more than during the same period last year. The figures come amid warnings the Chancellor may need to raise taxes again in the budget in order to plug a black hole of up to £51 billion in the public finances. It has been reported that the Government is looking at hitting owners of high-value houses with capital gains tax (CGT) when they sell their family home. The Guardian also reported that the Government is considering an overhaul of the current system on stamp duty on property purchases. Nevertheless, the Labour Government has ruled out increasing income tax, employees' national insurance contributions and VAT, restricting Ms Reeves' options when it comes to raising money. On Thursday, economists said that the latest data was positive for the Chancellor but does not halt the need for potential tax increases or spending cuts. Elliott Jordan-Doak, senior UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said: 'The Chancellor will still have to raise taxes in October despite borrowing matching official forecasts. 'The big picture remains that the public finances are in chronically weak condition. 'We think the Chancellor will need to resort to sin and stealth tax hikes, duty increases, and a pensions tax raid in order to meet her fiscal rules if she wants to meet her pledge of keeping headline tax rates unchanged.' Matt Swannell, chief economic advisor to the EY Item Club, said: 'Ultimately, it will be the OBR's (Office for Budget Responsibility) projection for borrowing over the coming years, not solely this year, that will determine whether the Government meets its fiscal target, and doing so will very likely require tax rises at the autumn budget. 'The little fiscal headroom left at the spring statement has likely been more than used up by rising bond yields, market expectations for the bank rate, and reversals in plans to cut spending in some areas, such as welfare reform.' The figures showed that central government receipts – the amount of money brought in, typically through taxes – was £100.1 billion for the month, up £8.8 billion against the same month last year. This came as compulsory social contributions, which include national insurance payments, increased by £2.6 billion to £16.3 billion after recent changes to national insurance contributions (Nics) paid by employers. Meanwhile, the Government also saw a £2.7 billion rise in self-assessed income tax receipts to £15.5 billion. The ONS also reported that state spending rose by £5.3 billion to £92.1 billion in July, partly linked to increases to pay and benefits, as well as cost inflation within departments. ONS deputy director for public sector finances Rob Doody said: 'Borrowing this July was £2.3 billion down on the same month last year and was the lowest July figure for three years. 'This reflects strong increases in tax and national insurance receipts. 'However, in the first four months of the financial year as a whole, borrowing was over £6 billion higher than in the same period in 2024.' Chief secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones said: 'We're investing in our public services and modernising the state, to improve outcomes and reduce costs in the medium term. 'Far too much taxpayer money is spent on interest payments for the longstanding national debt. 'That's why we're driving down government borrowing over the course of the parliament – so working people don't have to foot the bill and we can invest in better schools, hospitals and services for working families.'

Mother reveals how she reclaimed £5,686 in missing benefits - and how others can too
Millions of people are missing out on support often worth thousands of pounds a year, as the scale of unclaimed welfare benefits is revealed. Several crucial benefits are available in the UK to meet various needs. The complex nature of the welfare system means those who are eligible for certain benefits can often miss out. In 2023-2024, there was £23 billion of support unclaimed, according to research by Policy in Practice. The majority of this is universal credit, which is the most commonly claimed benefit in the UK for those on a low income. Newly released statistics from anti-poverty charity Turn2Us show that £9.6 billion has gone unclaimed in universal credit alone over the past year. Single mother-of-three Esther found out she was missing out on several benefits despite being entitled after using the charity's entitlement calculator. She said: 'The calculator uncovered support I didn't know I could get, things like Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for my children, council tax reduction [or support], and the health and carer elements within universal credit. 'Altogether it was worth thousands once backdated, but the real difference wasn't the amount, it was stability. I didn't have to work every waking hour just to keep up. I could heat the house, fix things when they broke, and actually be present for my children.' The 37-year-old has two twin sons with complex needs. This qualifies her for extra entitlements that she did not previously know she was eligible for. After finding this out, Esther was able to receive the carer's element of universal credit backdated three years, as well as a complete reduction of her council tax. Altogether, the three extra benefits she was able to claim would add up to an average of £400 a month, or £4,800 a year. And because Esther has two children with complex disabilities, both receive DLA separately, which would boost this amount to an average of £5,686. 'There's no shame in needing support,' said Esther, who advises people 'not to wait, because in my story I waited until it was at crisis point, and it doesn't have to be that'. The benefit next most missed out on after universal credit is council tax support, which is less well-known. This is a discount on council tax that is granted by local authorities to eligible households in their area who apply. Around £3.4 million worth of council tax support went unclaimed in 2023-2024, with more than 2.2 million households missing out. The discount can see the monthly charge reduced by up to 100 per cent, meaning it is well worth people applying. Eligibility will normally be based on factors like income, benefits received and savings. Anna Stevenson, benefits expert at Turn2us, said: 'A lot of people miss out on council tax support simply because they're not aware it exists. It's not always advertised clearly, and the information can be buried or seem complex. 'For families already stretched thin, it's easy to assume there's no extra help available. However, many are entitled to support that could make a real difference to their household budget.' To find out if they are missing out on any support they are entitled to, people can use the benefits calculator from Turn2Us, which will ask a few questions in confidence. A spokesperson for the Local Government Association, which represents councils across England, said: 'Councils provide a range of support to people who are struggling to meet their council tax payments. It is vital that anyone who is unable to afford their bills, or who is at risk of financial hardship, contacts their council as soon as possible to access help. 'High numbers are claiming a discount on their council tax, which is adding further pressure on this already underfunded vital local safety net. The government needs to ensure councils have the full amount of funding required to provide council tax support to those who need it. Otherwise, it is almost inevitable that bills will continue to be forced up for those who can least afford to pay.' A Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesperson said: 'Councils are required to put schemes in place to help those on low incomes with their council tax bills, and anyone currently experiencing difficulties paying their bill can benefit from a range of discounts and exemptions. 'We are determined to give working families more security, which is why, through our Plan for Change, we are consulting on ways to modernise the billing process to make it fairer and simpler, as well as protecting people against excessive hikes.'

Cost of Tesco meal deal rises again
Lunchtime has become a bit more expensive for some shoppers after Tesco announced yet another price increase for its popular meal deal. The iconic British lunch option, which includes a main, snack and drink, will now cost £3.85 for Clubcard holders and £4.25 for non-Clubcard holders from Thursday. This is up from £3.60 for shoppers with a Clubcard and from £4 for those without. Meanwhile, the premium meal deal will go up to £5.50, or £6 respectively, for those with or without Clubcards. While shoppers have complained about another rise, Tesco said the price is always in its customers' favour, adding some meal combinations would cost more than £8 if purchased separately. The change follows a previous price rise from £3.40 to £3.60 for Clubcard holders, and from £3.90 to £4 for non-Clubcard holders, in August 2024. A Tesco spokesperson said: 'Our meal deal remains great value and the ideal way to grab lunch on-the-go at just £3.85 for a main, snack and drink when bought with a Clubcard.' The price hike has solidified Tesco's regular meal deal as a more expensive option, even with a Clubcard, compared to Morrisons, Sainsbury's and the Co-op, though it is still cheaper than Boots. UK shoppers' guide to meal deals: Customers can create over 20 million different lunch combinations using the offer, a Tesco spokesperson told The Independent. 'The Tesco meal deal has got something for every taste, from a classic chicken club sandwich to Tesco Korean-style chicken dragon rolls," they added. Tesco said it will soon be adding new products to its premium meal deal, including a new Finest range salmon konbini roll and a Finest gochujang konbini roll. Earlier this month, the meal deal included Tesco's limited-edition birthday cake sandwich, which divided shoppers' opinions with its Victoria sponge flavour. However, some shoppers have complained that 'gentrifying' the meal deal with 'fancy options' has led to its demise as a low-cost lunch option. One Reddit user said: 'Once you throw in multi-fruit smoothies, exotic fruit pots and freshly made coffees, clearly that can't remain below £4 for long.' Liberal Democrat MP for Maidenhead, Joshua Reynolds, wrote on X: 'National outrage! Recall parliament!' Other shoppers on Reddit said they will not be giving up on the meal deal any time soon: '£3.85 for a sandwich, snack and a drink actually seems like a good deal in today's economy. I paid more for a coffee the other day.'
