7 Product Shortage Lessons From 2020 You Can Use in a Tariff-Driven Economy

If skyrocketing costs, an unstable economy and fear of supply chain disruptions feels familiar here in 2025, it's because the U.S. is facing similar conditions as it did in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic's effects hampered business as usual.

Hopefully, the U.S. has learned a thing or two from that time period that consumers can apply to this high-tariff economy.
Experts explained how the two time periods are similar and different and made recommendations for the average consumer to get through it.
The 2020 pandemic put businesses' lack of supply chain flexibility and their lack of strong alternative contingency or resiliency plans on center stage, according to Tyler Higgins, managing director at global management and technology consulting firm AArete.
'Today, businesses are facing some of the same vulnerabilities, particularly around supplier diversification,' he explained.
While tariffs are a different kind of problem, he said companies are once again learning about the risks of overdependence on one country or region.

Unfortunately, consumers, too, will be reminded — painfully, in the wallet — of these risks. 'The key difference from 2020 to today will be the shift from shortage to price volatility,' Higgins said.
Instead of sudden shortages in essential goods like toilet paper and cleaning supplies, with tariffs, 'the impact is slower and more concentrated on specific product categories,' Higgins said.
Expect price increases and delays of complex international source electronics and home appliances, or even raw DIY supplies like lumber or paint, warned Raj Bhaskar, cofounder and CEO of Tight, a fintech platform.
Specifically, Higgins said that products and components that come from China will likely be 'the most substantial' including 'fast fashion.' On these products, Higgins said the price increases will likely show up quickly.
'This follows the 2020 trend, but unlike in 2020, pricing concern is more likely now coming from policy rather than panic,' he said.
On that note, don't panic buy, Higgins warned. 'It rarely pays off and stockpiling will end up either leading to waste or leading to mass market disruption.'
Instead, his advice is to 'focus on the essentials and understand the impact tariffs may have on the cost of those items.'
However, Bhaskar recommended that if you want to buy a few things in advance of price hikes, consider things like smartphones, laptops and their accessories (phones, chargers, laptops), appliances, HVAC systems and anything where parts are likely imported from China.
For people wondering if it might make more sense to shop more U.S.-made products, Higgins said that it will be 'a balance.'
'It can still be a smart move to turn to local or U.S.-made products, but they're unlikely to be the cheaper option,' he explained. U.S.-made products won't directly have tariffs, but the cost of those goods will tend to be substantially higher.
He suggested consumers pay attention to which retailers hold off on price increases and who quickly passes them along to customers.
'By broadening your approach to shopping, you'll find the best places to procure necessary goods,' he said.
The best strategy right now is to maintain patience and do your research, Higgins said. 'Families that understand the implications of tariffs and where they'll impact them the most can best plan out the cost of meals, use enhanced budgeting tools and shop appropriately.'
He said there will always be a market for substitute items, lower-cost items or shifting to bulk vs. unit cost if budget allows.
Another approach to panic buying or bulk buying, Bhaskar suggested, is to create 'a rolling inventory.' This means buying one item ahead of when you open the last.
'This smooths costs and avoids overspending emotionally, which is what we observed during the early pandemic waves.'
It may also be time to switch to a tiered modeling of budgeting — such as essentials, discretionary and buffer categories, Bhaskar said.
Set up tracking with Mint or YNAB to monitor spending habits and identify scope creep early. 'Smart households run like smart businesses: flexible and proactive.'

Pinterest CEO Bill Ready made the controversial decision to turn off social features for users under 16, causing the stock to drop 26% as Wall Street predicted it would kill the platform's appeal to Gen Z. Instead, the move helped Pinterest, with Gen Z now representing over 40% of its user base who view the platform as 'an oasis away from toxicity.' Pinterest CEO Bill Ready made a decision three years ago that Wall Street didn't like: He would prioritize the long-term well-being of users over short-term engagement metrics, even if it meant watching the company's stock price tumble. The gamble has paid off. The visual discovery platform now boasts more than 570 million active users, with Generation Z representing over 40% of its user base—its largest and fastest-growing demographic. Pinterest's stock price today sits up 86% from when Ready took over as CEO in June 2022, although it remains 58% down from its all-time high amid the COVID pandemic in February 2021. 'There's a good business in positivity,' Ready told Fortune in an interview at Cannes Lions. 'We can do well by doing good, and it really is about short-term versus long-term.' After taking the reins at Pinterest, Ready's most controversial move came in 2023, when Pinterest became the first major platform to make accounts for users under 16 private-only by default, preventing young users from being discoverable to strangers online and restricting certain social features. The decision triggered immediate backlash from investors concerned about user engagement, with the stock price plunging 26% between April 14 and May 5, 2023. 'When we announced that, people thought it would be our death with Gen Z,' Ready recalled. 'But a year later we had nearly doubled because it was core to why we won with Gen Z.' Ready's somewhat contrarian approach reflects his broader philosophy that platforms can thrive by focusing on user health rather than maximizing screen time. Unlike other social media companies that optimize algorithms to show users content that triggers the strongest reactions, Pinterest redesigned its artificial intelligence to prioritize what users consciously choose to see again, not just what captures their attention momentarily. 'Social media became toxic when it switched from being a chronological feed of what your friends posted to what the AI thought you should see,' Ready explained. 'The AI figured out you look longer at the things that trigger you. We [the tech industry] started tuning for maximizing view time with the same triggering content rising to the top.' Pinterest's algorithm now appeals to what Ready calls 'conscious choice versus unconscious choice.' Using the metaphor of drivers slowing down to look at car accidents, Ready noted that while people may glance at disturbing content, they don't actually want to see more of it. 'If you ask somebody afterwards, 'Would you like to see another one?' The vast majority of people say, no, that was terrible.' The strategy has resonated particularly well with Gen Z users. 'If you ask a Gen Z user why do you go to Pinterest, there's two things they'll reliably tell you,' Ready said. 'The first, Pinterest just gets me. But the other really big part is they see Pinterest as an oasis away from the toxicity they experience elsewhere online. 'It shouldn't be controversial to say that we should be committed to the long-term health of our users. But what I'm trying to prove is that there's a good business in positivity.' The company has quickly extended its youth-focused initiatives beyond privacy settings. Pinterest shows pop-up messages to school-age users during school hours, encouraging them to return after classes, although this prompt can be ignored and bypassed. It has also advocated for phone-free schools while working with politicians and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic. Ready acknowledges the pressure that comes with making decisions that initially displease investors. 'You've got to have the conviction and the courage to say no, I believe this is right, but I'm going to see it through,' he said. 'But you also have to deliver results.' For Pinterest, those results have validated Ready's long-term approach. The platform has achieved what Ready calls 'something that is extremely rare amongst consumer apps'—it is 'actually aging down' by successfully attracting younger users, reversing a previous trend of aging up and out. The company's success during the advertising industry downturn has positioned it to take market share as economic uncertainty continues. 'My bet was that if we give them an alternative, they're going to choose it,' Ready said of Gen Z users. 'Fortunately, that's worked out for us.' Pharmacy chain Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ:WBA) reported Q2 CY2025 results topping the market's revenue expectations , with sales up 7.2% year on year to $38.99 billion. A company's long-term sales performance is one signal of its overall quality. Any business can put up a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long haul. With $154.6 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, Walgreens is a behemoth in the consumer retail sector and benefits from economies of scale, giving it an edge in distribution. This also enables it to gain more leverage on its fixed costs than smaller competitors and the flexibility to offer lower prices. However, its scale is a double-edged sword because it's harder to find incremental growth when you've penetrated most of the market. To expand meaningfully, Walgreens likely needs to tweak its prices or enter new markets. As you can see below, Walgreens grew its sales at a sluggish 3.8% compounded annual growth rate over the last six years (we compare to 2019 to normalize for COVID-19 impacts). This shows it failed to generate demand in any major way and is a rough starting point for our analysis. This quarter, Walgreens reported year-on-year revenue growth of 7.2%, and its $38.99 billion of revenue exceeded Wall Street's estimates by 6.5%. Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to decline by 1.6% over the next 12 months, a deceleration versus the last six years. This projection is underwhelming and indicates its products will see some demand headwinds. Could This Be the Smartest Dividend Stock to Buy in Summer 2025?

Realty Income is well off its highs, despite strong business results. Although it's a massive company, there's plenty of room for growth. Realty Income has a high yield and could benefit as interest rates fall. 10 stocks we like better than Realty Income › Realty Income (NYSE: O) is one of the largest real estate investment trusts, or REITs, in the market, owning more than 15,600 properties in the U.S. and Europe. Despite generally strong results from its business, the stock is down about 11% from its 52-week high and more than 25% from its all-time high reached just before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the company's business continues to perform quite well, and there are plenty of growth opportunities ahead, despite its large scale. In a nutshell, this could be a rare opportunity for long-term investors to buy shares at a bargain. Realty Income is a real estate investment trust that focuses on net lease properties. If you aren't familiar with the term, a net lease is a type of commercial real estate leasing agreement that generally has a long initial term (10-plus years) with annual rent increases built in, and requires tenants to pay taxes, insurance, and most maintenance costs. It is also commonly called a triple net lease. Net leases are most common among single-tenant properties, and Realty Income owns 15,600 of them. About three-quarters of its rental income is from retail tenants, and it also has a significant number of industrial properties, with smaller concentrations in agricultural, gaming, and other types. Don't let the word "retail" lead you to believe this is a riskier business model than it actually is. Realty Income's tenants are specifically selected for their recession resistance, as well as their lack of potential for e-commerce disruption. Most of the company's retail tenants are in one or more of three categories: Nondiscretionary: Retailers that sell things people need. Examples are drugstores and grocery stores. Discount-oriented: Retailers that offer deals that are tough to match for online competitors. Think dollar stores. These businesses tend to do better during recessions. Service-based: Retailers that sell a service, not a physical product. Fitness centers are a good example, and by definition, these businesses cannot be easily disrupted by e-commerce. Realty Income's business is designed to produce a steady income steam that grows predictably over time. And due to smart capital allocation when acquiring new properties, the company has the potential to create significant shareholder value over the years. The proof is in the numbers. Realty Income first listed on the public markets in 1994, and since that time has generated a 13.6% total return for investors, handily beating the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). Not only that, but the stock has a dividend yield of 5.6%, and the company has increased the monthly payout for 111 consecutive quarters. Realty Income is one of the largest REITs in the market, and many mistakenly believe that it has limited growth potential ahead of it. Even its core net lease retail property type is a multitrillion-dollar market, and it has some growth verticals that are equally (or more) massive that are still in the relatively early stages of growth. For starters, there is a massive opportunity in industrial real estate, the company's second-largest property type. Realty Income has only been in Europe for a few years, and this is an $8.5 trillion market where less than 1% of properties in the company's investable universe are already owned by public net-lease REITs. Gaming properties are another vertical Realty Income has recently started to pursue, and most recently, the company is capitalizing on the massive demand for data centers through a partnership with data center REIT leader Digital Realty Trust. The short answer is that REITs are highly sensitive to interest rates, and the elevated interest rate environment has pressured the entire sector -- especially companies with the most consistent cash flow, like Realty Income. However, the business is performing just fine. Even in the challenging interest rate environment, Realty Income is finding value-creating ways to invest new capital, continues to grow the bottom line, and its portfolio is 98.5% occupied. At the current price, Realty Income's stock trades for about 13.4 times expected full-year funds from operations (FFO), the real estate equivalent of earnings. That's a historically cheap valuation, and it's also rare to be able to buy shares at a dividend yield greater than 5%. With an excellent history of delivering for investors, Realty Income looks like an excellent opportunity in 2025 for patient investors.
