News182 days ago
Kohima, Aug 1 (PTI) Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday announced a series of initiatives aimed at promoting football and other sporting disciplines across the state.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 24th Dr T Ao Inter-District Football Tournament at Indira Gandhi Stadium here, Rio said that astroturf football grounds are being developed in all districts, with six already completed in Dimapur, Phek, Mon, Mokokchung, Tuensang, and Chümoukedima.
He also said that 28 futsal courts and 31 multipurpose sports buildings are under construction across the state, with more projects planned under the state's sports infrastructure programme.
Emphasising that sports is no longer just a form of entertainment, but a global industry worth $600 billion, he said Nagaland is steadily positioning itself to take part in this growing sector.
Under the Chief Minister's Sports Scholarship, 16 footballers and coaches are currently undergoing training while two bowlers are being trained in abroad.
Rio said that 20 young players who trained at the JSW Steel sports facility in Bengaluru recently won an exhibition match 4-0 against a regular football team there.
Paying tribute to Dr Talimeren Ao, the legendary Naga footballer who captained Independent India's first Olympic team in 1948, Rio said the inter-district tournament serves as a symbol of unity and inspiration for all Nagas.
'Dr T Ao's story — from a barefoot village boy to an Olympic captain — is a legacy that continues to connect, inspire, and push our youth to dream bigger," he said.
The chief minister acknowledged the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for renaming the Junior Girls National Football Championship as the Dr T Ao National Women's Junior Football Championship, which Nagaland will host later this year.
Wishing all the 17 districts participating in the two-week-long tournament, Rio said, 'To be successful like Dr T Ao, players must remain dedicated, sincere, and hardworking." PTI NBS NBS RG

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Seals World Championships Spot With Win At US trials

Last Updated: The 25-year-old McLaughlin-Levrone, who made the switch from the 400m hurdles to the 400m flat event, timed an impressive 48.90 seconds at Eugene's Hayward Field. American athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone stormed to victory in the 400m event at the US Trials on Sunday to seal her berth at the World Championships on Sunday. The 25-year-old McLaughlin-Levrone timed an impressive 48.90 seconds at Eugene's Hayward Field. The two-time Olympic 400m hurdles champion opted to go for a change in her pet event, deciding to take on the 400m flat event instead of her preferred hurdles event, but silenced naysayers with her showing since making the transition. McLaughlin-Levrone reasoned that she wanted to test herself in the 400m this season after a six-year unbeaten streak in the 400m hurdles. Going into Pre, we had an idea that we wanted to focus on the 400," McLaughlin-Levrone said. 'And I think we were like – listen, this is a challenge, it's not as comfortable for us but I want to challenge myself. I felt like this is the year I wanted to step out of the box and really push myself in a different way. So obviously it's uncomfortable, but I wanted to commit to it and I'm committed to it. And just excited to see where I can push myself," she added. McLaughlin-Levrone's dominance of the 400m hurdles encompassed several record-breaking milestones. She was the first woman to break the 52-second barrier in 2021, and then became the first woman to duck under 51 seconds a year later. Last year, she obliterated her own world record in storming to victory at the Paris Olympics. McLaughlin-Levrone, though, said she was not setting any specific record targets as she tries her hand at the 400m flat. 'Everyone talks about the American record of course. That's going to come when it's supposed to come," she said. '(But) I think this year and this event has taught me patience. I've learned a lot about myself. I've learned a lot about the 400. But ultimately every day it's stepping on the track, being the best I can be, figuring out a race that is very foreign to me and taking on new challenges." McLaughlin-Levrone showed she is likely to be in contention for a medal in Tokyo with an emphatic victory on Saturday. She surged into an early lead over the first 200m and then kicked again down the final straight to storm home. Isabella Whittaker was second in 49.59 seconds while Aaliyah Butler was third in 49.91 seconds. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. PCB Officially Bans 'Pakistan' From World Champions Of Legends After India Boycott

Last Updated: The Pakistan Cricket Board banned Pakistan's future participation in the World Championship of Legends, citing hypocrisy and bias. The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced a blanket ban on future participation in the World Championship of Legends (WCL). According to the governing body of Pakistan cricket, WCL's statement and actions following India Legends' decision to pull out of the semi-final against Pakistan were 'tainted with hypocrisy and bias'. 'The PCB, during its 79th BoG meeting held virtually under the chairmanship of Mohsin Naqvi reviewed with considerable disappointment WCL's appalling conduct of awarding points to a willfully forfeiting team, and the content of the press releases of the WCL announcing the cancellation of the scheduled India vs. Pakistan legends matches, which were tainted with hypocrisy and bias. The press releases highlight a duality where the narrative of 'peace through sport" is selectively applied and sporting events are held hostage to political expediency and narrow commercial interests. 'In light of this unfortunate development, which underscores a clear and intolerable pattern of external influence and a disregard for the principles of sporting neutrality, the Pakistan Cricket Board is compelled to take a firm stance. The PCB can no longer condone participation in an event where the fundamental principles of fair play and unbiased administration are compromised by external pressures," read the statement by PCB. PCB's virtual BoG meeting was attended by Sumair Ahmed Syed, Salman Naseer, Zaheer Abbas, Zahid Akhtar Zaman, Sajjad Ali Khokhar, Zafarullah Jadgal, Tanveer Ahmed, Tariq Sarwar, Muhammad Ismail Qureshi, Anwaar Ahmad Khan, Adnan Malik, Usman Wahla (special invitee), and Mir Hassan Naqvi (Additional Secretary).
