Toronto's century-old enormous elm tree to be cut down

The elm has been a staple in Christie Pits for generations, but next week it will be coming down. A native elm tree towering over the Christie Pits neighbourhood for a century is coming down. At the end of May, the City of Toronto determined that the American elm, located on Barton Avenue, was nearly dead. Tree plaque The plaque recognizing the Enormous Elm Tree in Christie Pits. Road closure signs have been posted on the street, indicating that the removal of the enormous elm will take place between Tuesday and Thursday. 'I've lived in the neighbourhood for 25 years, and our family even has a name for this tree - Eddie the elm,' said Brenda Cooke, who came by to take pictures of the tree Friday. 'I'm very upset. A tree like this doesn't come along every day. I'll never see a tree like this again in my lifetime,' an emotional Cooke added. Tanya Neumeyer, who also lives nearby, says she has been admiring the tree from Christie Pits parks for years. Tanya Neumeyer Tanya Neumeyer hugs the Enormous Elm Tree. (CTV News) 'I love this tree,' she said. 'It had a full canopy of leaves providing shade and shelter for birds and humans, and this year, as you can see, there are no leaves on 95 per cent of it.' Joel Harrison-Off, the acting supervisor of the city's forest healthcare and management, said the tree is one of the largest native elm trees in Toronto and was one of the few survivors of Dutch Elm disease, which ravaged the population. 'I'm sad, to be honest,' said Harrison-Off. 'I've been investigating and inspecting this tree for the past 10 years.' The tree had been getting injected with fungicide, and while tissue tests for disease were inconclusive, he said illness can develop quickly. 'This is a big hit to that downtown urban canopy; it's a big hit to people familiar with that tree, who liked to see it through the seasons,' Harrison-Off said. 'It's a big hit for us forestry people who are trying to maintain these trees, to replace something that large, you know, takes hundreds of years.' Preserving the elm's legacy Eric Davies hopes to see the elm's legacy live on. He and his team at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Forestry are working to collect the elm's seeds in an effort to get more native tree species back in the ground. Eric Davis Eric Davis showing a small elm tree growing at the foot of the dead, enormous elm tree that is coming down. (CTV News) 'Knock on wood, the seeds are viable, the cuttings are viable,' he said. Davies explained that come Tuesday, when the tree begins to come down, his team will collect seeds and then take them to the university to evaluate them. He said that if they grow, the elm trees can get to a good size quickly. 'I think it's hopeful considering the history of this tree throughout many years,' said local resident Daniel Damiao. The city said removing the tree will prevent it from becoming a hazard because dead branches are prone to breaking and help prevent the further spread of disease.

Abstractive Health Launches Clinical Time Machine, the First AI Game Built on Real Historical Patient Records

Article content NEW YORK — Abstractive Health has launched Clinical Time Machine, an AI-driven simulation that immerses physicians in diagnostic cases using real historical medical charts. Built on the same HIPAA-compliant platform that powers live summarization of electronic health records (EHRs) in hospital settings, the simulation lets clinicians explore rare, complex cases from hundreds of years ago without patient risk. Article content CEO Vince Hartman calls it 'a Microsoft Flight Simulator for medicine,' enabling diagnostic training on authentic data with no need for EHR integration. 'Three years after ChatGPT, fewer than 1% of physicians have ever seen an AI full medical record summary,' he says. 'We're changing that.' Article content Each case begins with an AI-generated summary distilled from original, centuries-old handwritten documents. Clinicians explore the structured chart, from history of present illness to labs and vitals, and receive simulated updates based on actual clinical observations. 'It's not a quiz. It's about engaging clinical reasoning in a sandbox where doctors can make decisions and learn from them,' Hartman explains. Article content The simulation is built on Abstractive Health's existing summarization and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and agentic AI platform. Leveraging advanced OCR and a robust AI summarization pipeline, it can also process handwritten records and turn scribbled notes into readable clinical narratives. The summarization technology is currently being piloted at Weill Cornell Medicine in a research collaboration to assist with writing Emergency Medicine handoff notes. Abstractive Health is also preparing to roll out the experience to Canadian outpatient clinics through a partnership with Canada's WELL Health Technologies that followed an investment and distribution deal inked last year. Article content Abstractive Health's broader goal is to bring clinicians into meaningful, hands-on engagement with AI. 'We're not just saving time – we're helping doctors think better,' Hartman says. 'This is about curiosity, growth, and elevating clinical skill.' Article content Clinical Time Machine is available now through Abstractive's platform for free. Article content Abstractive Health retrieves medical records, generates trusted AI summaries, and answers complex clinical questions. Its platform is used by clinicians nationwide and is currently in pilots with Well Health and Weill Cornell Medicine. A top 3 company in the 2024 VA AI Tech Sprint, Abstractive is backed by the NSF and has been featured by Forbes 30 Under 30. Amazon's healthcare business to be divided into six units after losing top health executives

(AP Photo/Michael Sohn, File) Amazon said on Friday its healthcare business will be divided into six new units as part of a restructuring effort, in a move that comes after recent top health executive departures. The company's chief medical officer, Sunita Mishra, stepped down last month, while Aaron Martin, who has been the vice president of the healthcare unit, is also set to step down. This reorganization follows a series of other executive departures, including Vin Gupta, who served as chief medical officer of Amazon Pharmacy, and Trent Green, the CEO of One Medical. Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, said in an email to Reuters that these updates 'reflect a broader strategy to better deliver for patients and accelerate innovation across the business.' 'If we can make one thing a little bit easier for a lot of people, we'll save them a lot of time, a lot of money, and some lives,' Lindsay added. Amazon has been expanding into the healthcare industry for years, starting with the acquisition of PillPack for US$750 million in 2018 and the launch of Amazon Pharmacy in 2020. It bought One Medical for about US$3.9 billion in 2023 to gain access to primary care clinics and a membership model. In February 2024, Amazon eliminated 115 jobs across its healthcare units, Lindsay had said in a letter to employees. A person cited by Business Insider, which first reported the job cuts, estimated up to 400 employees could lose their jobs. CNBC first reported the restructuring efforts earlier on Friday. The e-commerce giant has been working on an overhaul for the past several months, the CNBC report said, adding that Amazon has not conducted any broad layoffs as part of this reorganization. --- Reporting by Siddhi Mahatole and Mariam Sunny in Bengaluru; Editing by Alan Barona
