Mariners get lefty reliever Caleb Ferguson in deal with Pirates, AP source says
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners agreed to acquire left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, giving their bullpen another arm as they make a playoff push, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been announced, said the Pirates will receive right-handed pitching prospect Jeter Martinez from the Mariners.
The 29-year-old Ferguson is 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 43 1/3 innings this season and joins a Mariners bullpen that ranks seventh in the majors with in ERA at 3.74. Ferguson is making $3 million this year and is eligible for free agency after next season.
Seattle entered Wednesday in position for the third and final American League wild-card spot.
The 19-year-old Martinez has a 6.18 ERA in 16 starts for Class A Modesto. A native of Mexico, he was rated as the Mariners' No. 13 overall prospect.

Lyon completes the signing of Czech Republic midfielder Pavel Šulc from Viktoria Plzeň
LYON, France (AP) — Czech Republic international Pavel Šulc has completed a move to French club Lyon from Viktoria Plzeň. Both clubs confirmed the transfer for a fee of 10 million euros ($11.6 million) on Monday. The offensive midfielder scored 15 goals and had nine assists last season for Viktoria in the Czech league, having netted 18 goals and added six assists the previous campaign. In July, he won the Czech Republic's Golden Ball award for the first time for being the best player of the 2024-25 season. Because, you know, for the last two months, the Mariners have had half an infield consisting of rookies, right? Ben Williamson, who was not necessarily that top, top prospect, but he was handling third base. He gets sent down after they acquired Eugenio Suarez, predictably, but Cole Young is, he's the guy at 2nd base, and he hasn't necessarily faced too many lefties. He hit a home run on, uh, on Thursday that I did not think he could physically do, which was to the 2nd deck. I know it was originally measured at 470. It was, you know, changed to 456. I don't care. I didn't think he could hit 430. The fact that he has that kind of juice, I did not expect. But he's an interesting character in this Mariners lineup, one that has been revamped and is now basically all veterans who have proven a lot of stuff at the Major League level. Cole Young though, who is a first round pick, one of the youngest players in baseball, if he can become even an average hitter batting 7th, 8th or 9th, that's really what's gonna put this lineup over the top because right now he looks like the weak link on paper. Because he's this young kid who hasn't really, you know, seen a lot of Major League pitching, but he's shown flashes over the last month and, he could really take this lineup to a whole different level. So he's definitely someone I am watching very closely down the stretch for the Seattle Mariners. Close
