Ex-NBA star Arenas arrested on charges of hosting illegal poker games
The 43-year-old Arenas, who starred for the Washington Wizards, rented out the luxury home that he owned in Encino 'for the purposes of hosting high-stakes illegal poker games' between September 2021 and July 2022, according to an indictment unsealed in Los Angeles.
The indictment also alleges the gatherings included young women who received tips to 'serve drinks, provide massages, and offer companionship' to players.
Arenas is charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of operating an illegal gambling business, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators.
At his arraignment in federal court in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, he pleaded not guilty and was released on $50,000 bond.
US Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Chooljian set a trial date of September 23.
Those arrested Wednesday also included 49-year-old Yevgeni Gershman, described as a suspected organized crime figure from Israel.
According to the indictment, an associate of Arenas, Arthur Kats, staged the house for the poker games at his direction, recruited co-conspirators and collected rent on Arenas's behalf.
Gershman and the three other defendants allegedly ran the illegal 'Pot Limit Omaha' poker games in which players were charged a 'rake,' either a cut of each pot or a fee per hand.
The women servers were allegedly required to pay some of their tips to the organizers, who also provided chefs, valets and armed guards.
The indictment includes alleged texts between Arenas and Kats in which the games were set up.
Authorities said that in November 2021, Arenas texted Kats a picture of a poker table with 'ARENAS POKER CLUB' printed on it, along with an image of a basketball player with an 'Arenas' jersey.
If convicted, the defendants face a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each count.
Arenas, a three-time NBA All-Star, last played in the league in 2012 and played for the Shanghai Sharks in China in 2012-13.
In December 2009 he was involved in an infamous incident with Washington teammate Javaris Crittenton in which both brought guns into the locker room. Arenas claims their dispute stemmed from a card game.

Celtics change hands in US$6.1bil deal, NBA gives full approval
NEW YORK: The NBA on Wednesday approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to an investment group led by Bill Chisholm, five months after the deal worth a then-record US$6.1 billion was agreed. "The NBA Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of the controlling interests in the Boston Celtics to an investor group led by Bill Chisholm," the league said in a brief statement. "The transaction is expected to close shortly." Chisholm is the managing director and co-founder of Symphony Technology Group. When he and his co-investors agreed to purchase the storied Celtics franchise "at an initial valuation of US$6.1 billion," that was the highest ever offered for a North American sports team. It has since been surpassed by the US$10 billion sale, in June, of the Los Angeles Lakers by the Buss family to billionaire Mark Walter. When the Celtics sale was announced, it was stated that Wyc Grousbeck would continue in his roles of chief executive officer and governor, overseeing team operations through the 2027-28 season. The Grousbeck family and Steve Pagliuca purchased the Celtics for US$360 million in 2002. According to the Chandler Police Department's redacted report released Friday, video evidence shows that Emilie's husband, Brady Kiser, left little Trigg 'in the backyard unsupervised for more than nine minutes' on the evening of May 12. The report states that Trigg — who would have turned 4 in July — was 'in the water for about seven of those minutes.' Brady previously told police that Trigg was only out of his sight for mere moments. 'I didn't have a clock, obviously, I don't know the exact time, but it was moments,' Brady told an investigating officer, according to the report. 'It wasn't minutes, it was moments. It wasn't that he had been out of sight for long.' However, the lead investigator on the case, citing surveillance footage from the home, ultimately concluded Trigg tripped within two-and-a-half minutes of being outside and ended up in the pool at 6.32pm. He was in the water until his dad found him at 6.39. 'It is clear Brady's attention was divided, and he was not watching [Trigg] at all during the critical times mentioned,' the police report states. 'During two interviews, he did not know what [Trigg] was doing before he fell in and did not see [Trigg] struggling to swim.' Brady, however, has insisted he wasn't distracted by the NBA playoffs — despite having bet money on the Game 4 face-off between the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics, and the game being on TV when officers arrived at the scene. In his second interview with police, Brady maintained that was 'not where [his] focus was,' but instead on their 5-month-old, Theodore. He said that between the time 26-year-old Emilie left to meet up with friends and when he found Trigg in the pool, he'd 'never set … down' their newborn son. Little Trigg was ultimately declared dead on May 18 after spending nearly a week in the hospital in critical condition. Contrary to the Chandler Police Department's recommendation that Brady be charged with felony child abuse in Trigg's fatal drowning, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office announced late last month it would not pursue the case.
