George Russell facing anxious wait to discover if he has 2026 Mercedes seat

George Russell's wait for his Formula One future to be confirmed is set to extend until at least next month's summer break.
Max Verstappen's break clause from his Red Bull contract can no longer be activated after his fourth-placed finish at Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix ensured the Dutchman will not be lower than third in the world championship when the sport enters its mid-season shutdown.
Mercedes have made little secret of their desire to sign the four-time world champion. As it stands, Russell - who despite a series of impressive performances this year - is without a deal for 2026.
Mercedes, however, would now be forced to buy Verstappen out of his Red Bull contract which runs until 2028 - and that could accelerate their decision to announce Russell will be retained.
But the PA news agency has been told by a source there are no plans for an official update on the British driver's future prior to Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.
A three-week break follows before the next round in the Netherlands on August 31.
Despite the continued speculation surrounding suggestions Verstappen could trade Red Bull for Mercedes, those close to the Russell camp have indicated for a number of weeks the 27-year-old is extremely confident of striking a contract extension.
And it would appear highly unlikely that a new deal with Mercedes will not be finalised. Russell finished fifth on Sunday but Mercedes endured a difficult weekend in the Ardennes.
Russell's rookie team-mate Kimi Antonelli's dismal run of form continued after he crossed the line in 16th. The 18-year-old has scored points in just one of his last seven appearances. He was close to tears after qualifying on Saturday, admitting he was struggling with his confidence.
That prompted a visit from Lewis Hamilton to the Mercedes motorhome ahead of Sunday's race to offer the driver who replaced him some words of encouragement.
Hamilton started in the pit lane and drove from 18th to seventh but Antonelli - who also begun the rain-hit race from the pits - laboured and finished 52 seconds behind team-mate Russell.
Russell has scored 157 points to Antonelli's 63 after 13 of the 24 rounds. Mercedes are third in the constuctors' standings, 296 points adrift of McLaren.

Felix leaves Chelsea to join Saudi's Al Nassr

PA Media/dpa London Joao Felix has left Chelsea to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr on a permanent deal. The 25-year-old Portugal international moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid last summer, having had an earlier spell with the Blues on loan in 2023. He made 20 appearances for Enzo Maresca's side in the first half of the season - but started only three Premier League games - before leaving for AC Milan on loan in January. 'We thank Joao for his efforts across his two spells at the club and wish him well for the future,' Chelsea said in the statement. Felix has signed a two-year contract with his new club. Al-Nassr have reportedly paid an initial £26 million ($34.8 million) transfer fee, although add-ons could see that rise as high as £43 million - close to the sum Chelsea paid Atletico for his services last summer. He joins his Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, who announced his arrival with a short video on social media in which Felix said: 'I am here to spread joy. Let's win together.'

German rider Lipowitz welcomes a break after Tour de France podium heroics

dpa Paris Florian Lipowitz planned a quiet Monday in Paris after a stunning third-place finish at the Tour de France the previous day. 'I am looking forward to the break,' the Tour debutant said after completing the final podium behind four-time winner Tadej Pogacar and ex-champion Jonas Vingegaard. Lipowitz said he would stay in Paris Monday and enjoy a croissant and a café au lait with his partner as he admitted he still has to come to terms with his biggest career success, which also includes winning the white jersey classification for the best young rider. 'It will take me another day or two to realize what happened over the past three weeks. It was always my dream. I never thought it would become reality. It is very special to ride onto the podium in my first Tour,' the 24-year-old Lipowitz said. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was among those to congratulate Lipowitz. 'A sensational German success at the Tour de France. Congratulations, Florian Lipowitz on an outstanding third place,' Merz said on platform X, adding that he had 'thrilled many cycling fans across the country.' Lipowitz is the first German on the final Tour podium since Andreas Klöden in 2006 to make the final Tour podium. The former biathlete had already shown his big talent by coming seventh at last year's Vuelta a Espana, and he finished third behind Pogacar and Vingegaard at the Critérium du Dauphiné last month. Lipowitz admitted that Pogacar and Vingegaard are 'still at another level' but he has now firmly established himself among the best. Lipowitz gave the Red Bull team a first Tour podium after the team celebrated victories at the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta in previous years. Team general manager Ralph Denk spoke of 'a milestone' and 'the icing on the cake to achieve it with a rider you became a pro cyclist at your team.' Denk named the development of Lipowitz 'a project of the heart' and said it would be 'a dream' if Lipowitz could win the Tour one day. Lipowitz meanwhile also remained relaxed around speculation that double Olympic gold medallist and time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel could join the team. 'I would be happy as well if he really comes. We could achieve something great together,' he said.
