Pembrokeshire: Brynmyrnach Chapel to become heritage centre

Brynmyrnach Chapel in Hermon, Pembrokeshire, will now serve the community in a different way after its congregation gathered for the last time in September 2022, closing the doors on 134 years of worship.
Following more than two years of fundraising and negotiations, volunteers have secured the building and plan to transform it into a heritage centre, pop-up cafe, and two-bedroom flats to help address housing needs for young people.
Cris Tomos, who first proposed the idea at a public meeting, said: "The new Heritage and Housing Trust is a Community Benefit Society and limited company.
"Local people are the shareholders in this cooperative housing venture that will have a local letting policy allowing affordable housing for local families and couples.
"This could be a blueprint for other communities to take on the chapels and churches that are closing."
A total of 20 community investors helped raise £40,000 to purchase the chapel.
The social enterprise behind the project, CarTrefUn Ltd, has since secured funding from the Shared Prosperity Fund, administered by Pembrokeshire County Council.
Plans are already in motion to convert the building into a self-sustaining, community-owned hub that celebrates the agricultural, industrial, Welsh language, and cultural heritage of Hermon and the wider Llanfyrnach parish.
A public meeting will be held at Brynmyrnach Chapel on Wednesday, August 13, at 6pm.
Attendees are invited to share ideas and help shape the future of the site, which leaders hope will remain rooted in community needs and values.
Mr Tomos said: "People in the village have already come up with additional ideas of a pop-up cafe and even a community bread oven to bake local produce."
Following the meeting, refreshments and a presentation will take place at Canolfan Hermon, the village hall.
Anyone interested in getting involved can contact the team at cartrefun@gmail.com or call 01239 831968.
Updates and information are also available on the project's Facebook page, Cartrefun.

Couple hoping to open restaurant told they can't offer takeaway service

Couple hoping to open restaurant told they can't offer takeaway service Council officers said it would lead to 'indiscriminate' parking nearby and planning inspector agrees The former Caereithin Post Office, Ravenhill, Swansea, which has planning permission to be a restaurant but with a catch (Image: Google Maps ) Proposals for a new restaurant at a former post office in Swansea have been set back after a planning inspector said it can't include takeaways or deliveries. ‌ A husband and wife had secured change of use permission from Swansea Council last year to set up a restaurant at the old Caereithin Post Office in Ravenhill but a planning condition was imposed prohibiting takeaways because of its proximity to a busy junction and a lack of parking spaces for people picking up food. Never miss a Swansea story by signing up to our newsletter here . ‌ The couple then applied to the council to vary the condition to allow a takeaway service. ‌ Their planning agent contended the presence of double yellow lines, a bus stop, and pedestrian guard railing prevented indiscriminate parking and waiting and said there wasn't evidence of such activity despite nearby businesses attracting short-term visits. The agent added the majority of takeaways were delivered to people's homes these days – often on mopeds and E-bikes – rather than being collected and said this would give the restaurant business more control over parking. 'Whilst it is recognised that deliveries and collections fall within the category of takeaways they are fundamentally different in character,' said the agent's report. It claimed a nearby business had introduced takeaways without any apparent issues. Article continues below The council took a different view and said the increased to-ing and fro-ing of customers would cause indiscriminate and unacceptable short-term parking nearby. The former post office is around 50m from the Pentregethin Road-Ravenhill Road junction. 'The close proximity to the signalised crossroads of Pentregethin Road with Ravenhill Road further exacerbates this issue,' said the planning officers' report. It added that a nearby café had sought consent for takeaways in 2021 and this also been refused. The applicants keen to redevelop the former post office appealed the council's decision but this has now been dismissed. ‌ The inspector from Welsh Government body planning and environment decisions Wales said there was no 'cogent evidence' that having more deliveries as opposed to collections would reduce highway safety risks in this case. 'There is also no direct evidence that links delivery services to any less ad hoc or indiscriminate patterns than customer collections,' said the inspector's report. 'Similarly it is not clear how the appellants would effectively control parking behaviours by delivery drivers.' Article continues below

Town to lose pub that's been there for centuries

Town to lose pub that's been there for centuries It has been a pub in Llantrisant since the 18th century with one of the earliest licenses dating back to 1791 The Cross Keys pub will no longer be a drinking establishment (Image: WalesOnline/Rob Browne) A pub in the heart of a Welsh town is going to to lost after centuries. The Cross Keys Hotel in Llantrisant Old Town, Rhondda Cynon Taf closed its doors in January after the tenants who ran the pub vacated the property for the building to be transferred to new owners. ‌ The Cross Keys has been a pub since the 18th century, with one of the earliest licenses for the building dating back to 1791. However, plans have been approved by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to change the use of the building from a licensed premises to a retail store, office and self-contained flat. ‌ A planning application had previously been submitted to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to change the use of the Cross Keys from a licensed premises to offices. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter ‌ There was a strong "third-party response" against the application, an RCT planning committee heard last month, with 262 letters petitioned against the application. A total of 18 letters of support were submitted. While members of the committee noted they were concerned to see another pub being lost, they recognised that there were a number of other pubs in the vicinity. Article continues below There had previously been extensive objections to an application seeking to change the use of a pub in the nearby village of Llanharry. Last year, the landlord of The Fox and Hounds pub lost a planning battle with residents to turn the village's only pub into housing. However, he has now won permission to turn it into a shop, potentially scuppering hopes that the community could take it on. Chair of the committee, councillor Sharon Rees said: "Our hearts are probably telling us we would prefer to see a pub in the centre of Llantrisant. ‌ "We had far reaching discussions about the Fox and Hounds and that decision was probably far easier to reach as there was no competition. This is a different situation but it doesn't make it much easier for us." The committee recommended that the application for the change of use be granted. At present, on the ground floor there are bar areas as well as a kitchen and the top floor is occupied by a function room and living quarters. ‌ Now the planning application has been granted, the space on the ground floor can be converted into a general office as well as retail store. The first floor can be converted into a self-contained flat and storage space. The application was submitted by Town Garage (Rentals) LTD, a local vehicle repair shop who own premises next to The Cross Keys. Article continues below
