Steelers' Cam Heyward hints at sitting out of games as contract negotiation tool

Yahoo2 days ago
The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be in the midst of yet another ugly contract negotiation, as veteran DT Cameron Heyward recently hinted at what a worst-case scenario could look like.
At training camp on Monday, Heyward was asked whether he'd contemplate sitting out games — missing time as he sought a new deal — and his response was hardly what Steelers fans were looking to hear.
"I think there are definitely options out there that could reflect that," Heyward told reporters, via The Athletic's Mike DeFabo.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported last Thursday that Heyward and the Steelers were "privately" discussing a restructured contract after his dominant 2024 season — one where he was arguably the greatest defensive tackle in the league, despite being outside the top 20 in terms of salary.
If sitting out games is truly where the contract negotiations are headed, the Steelers need to pay Heyward as soon as possible — especially with Pittsburgh appearing to be all in on 2025 for a Super Bowl push.

Saints Could Cut Ties With Former Chiefs Super Bowl Champion

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New Orleans Saints are certainly not viewed as playoff contenders heading into the 2025 NFL season, as they have a very unsettled quarterback situation and gaping holes on both sides of the ball. As you would expect from a rebuilding team, the Saints seem to be prioritizing youth, which is why some of their veterans may not be safe before Week 1. More news: Patrick Mahomes Haters Will Love This Scathing Chiefs Prediction Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport listed off one top cut candidate for each NFL prior to the coming season, and for the Saints, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was the choice. "Alvin Kamara is the unquestioned lead back in the Big Easy. Kendre Miller appears safely entrenched as the RB2," Davenport wrote. "With Devin Neal and Velus Jones Jr. widely projected to round out the position group, both Edwards-Helaire and Cam Akers are former NFL starters who could be searching for new homes after cutdown day." The New Orleans Saints will welcome vaccinated fans to the Superdome at full capacity this NFL season, as well as those providing negative COVID-19 tests. Those who don't wish to comply with the rules, including season ticket holders, will not be given refunds. This image shows a Saints helmet at M&T Bank Stadium on August 14, 2021 in Baltimore, Maryland. More Scott Taetsch/Getty Edwards-Helaire barely saw the field during his debut campaign with New Orleans last year, appearing in just two games and carrying the ball 13 times for 46 yards. With the Saints having so many other options in their backfield, Davenport is right in asserting that Edwards-Helaire is absolutely on the chopping block. The 26-year-old has certainly not materialized like everyone hoped when the Kansas City Chiefs selected him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Edwards-Helaire did show some promise in Year 1, registering 803 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 4.4 yards per carry while also catching 36 passes for 297 yards and a score. However, it did not take long for the LSU product to experience a sharp downturn. The following season, Edwards-Helaire totaled 517 yards while reaching the end zone four times as a rusher, playing in just 10 games. Injuries have largely derailed him ever since, with the Baton Rouge, La. native appearing in just 37 contests over the last four seasons. More news: Insider Reveals Bad News for 49ers' Critical Defender Edwards-Helaire did manage to win a Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2023, although his role was incredibly limited. That season, he logged 223 yards and a touchdown as a rusher, serving as Kansas City's No. 2 running back behind Isiah Pacheco. At this point, Edwards-Helaire's NFL future is undoubtedly in jeopardy, especially if the Saints end up releasing him before the start of the season. He definitely had a strong collegiate career, racking up 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns on 6.6 yards per attempt during his final year at LSU, but that obviously has not translated onto the professional level. We'll see if New Orleans ends up pulling the plug on Edwards-Helaire before long. For more on the Saints and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

5 Eagles players the Browns need to focus on in their upcoming preseason matchup

The Cleveland Browns are gearing up for their second preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. On Wednesday and Thursday, the Browns had a joint practice in Philadelphia where they got a sneak peek at the opposing talent. Many of the Eagles' starters participated in the practices, but they most likely won't see players like quarterback Jalen Hurts or wide receiver A.J. Brown in action this weekend. Instead, the Eagles' starters will be mixed in with some second- and third-team players slowly substituting in. Looking at the Eagles' depth chart, you'll find a few familiar faces from the 2024 Browns roster. Former fifth-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson and two-year Cleveland defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo will get multiple opportunities to perform against their old squad. After a joint practice that produced some key takeaways, one thing is clear: the Browns will have to focus on several key players if they want to come out of this matchup with a win. QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson One of the few former Browns players who should be out for revenge against his old team is Eagles quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The former fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft spent two years in Cleveland before being traded to Philadelphia this past offseason. In the trade, the Browns acquired veteran quarterback Kenny Pickett. In the first preseason game, Thompson-Robinson saw limited action, which is expected to increase against the Browns. Last week, current backup quarterback Tanner McKee had a phenomenal day against the Cincinnati Bengals' defense. The expectation now is that both McKee and Thompson-Robinson will get more reps, with Thompson-Robinson facing a very familiar defense. With rookie quarterback Kyle McCord pushing him for the QB3 spot, Thompson-Robinson would love nothing more than to deliver a strong performance. WR Darius Cooper One of the top playmakers for the Eagles in their first preseason game was undrafted wide receiver Darius Cooper. Last week against Cincinnati, Cooper hauled in six receptions on seven targets, totaling 82 yards and a touchdown in limited reps. With that performance and an impressive training camp, the former TCU star has already made significant headway in his bid for a spot on the final 53-man roster. Cooper is expected to receive the bulk of the wide receiver snaps against the Browns despite his standout performance against the Bengals. Cornerbacks like Cameron Mitchell and Rayshawn Jenkins will have their hands full with this talented receiver — and they could use a strong showing to bolster their cases for a spot on the Browns' 53-man roster. LB Dallas Gant Another player who made great use of his limited snaps last week was linebacker Dallas Gant. Last year, Gant went from undrafted free agent to Super Bowl champion with the Eagles. Now, he's looking to build on his solid preseason debut in Week 1 and have an even greater impact this weekend. Against the Bengals, Gant recorded four total tackles in just 24 snaps, earning a 76.9 overall PFF grade — the third-highest on the Eagles' defense in Week 1 of the preseason. If he wants to earn meaningful regular-season snaps, he'll need to deliver a similar, if not better, performance. RB AJ Dillon A familiar face around the NFL who will likely see playing time against the Browns is running back AJ Dillon. The former Green Bay Packer is aiming to revive his career after a poor showing during the 2024 season. Following a disappointing first outing as an Eagle, Dillon will look to put his name back on the map against Cleveland. In his preseason debut, Dillon carried the ball five times for 27 yards — a performance many considered underwhelming given expectations for his role in the new offense. Currently listed as RB3 on Philadelphia's depth chart, Dillon will likely be tested with plenty of opportunities against the Browns. LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr. Another standout from last week's preseason game was rookie linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. In his debut, he logged 31 total snaps and a team-leading six tackles. The Eagles played many of their starters in their first preseason matchup, and that trend is expected to continue on Saturday. Even though he is currently listed as a starter on the depth chart, Trotter Jr. is expected to play significant snaps against the Browns. Cleveland's offense is slated to start Dillon Gabriel at quarterback if he can overcome his hamstring injury; if not, Tyler Huntley will likely get the nod. Trotter Jr. and the rest of the Eagles' starters will provide a stiff challenge for whichever quarterback takes the field for Cleveland.

Former Steelers CB Steven Nelson fires brutal shot at Jalen Ramsey

It's safe to say not everyone is excited about Jalen Ramsey's addition to the Steelers' defense — as a cornerback from Pittsburgh's past roasted him on social media. On Friday, former Steelers CB Steven Nelson aired his reaction to the news that Ramsey would be covering Buccaneers WR Mike Evans in joint practice — claiming he'd choose any wideout in coverage over the new Steelers cornerback. "Easy money," Nelson said on an Instagram story. "Take the over on whatever wide receiver [Ramsey] guards." Nelson's sour grapes should be taken with a grain of salt, as the former Steelers cornerback didn't have the smoothest of exits from Pittsburgh — dropping a fiery tweet on social media before his release. "Making a public announcement is a little out of my character, but you guys made your decision, please don't hold me hostage," Nelson posted via X on March 23, 2021. It remains to be seen if Ramsey, one of the most outspoken defenders in the NFL, will take the high road in response to Nelson's criticism — but we at Steelers Wire will keep you all updated as more information becomes available.
