Leicestershire villages battle it out at annual ‘bottle-kicking' contest
Two villages in Leicestershire have competed against each other in an annual sporting tradition known as 'bottle kicking'.
The contest between neighbouring Hallaton and Medbourne happens every Easter Monday and participants compete to bring a wooden barrel of beer across a boundary stream in their respective village.
The 'bottles' – old wooden barrels holding about a gallon of beer – are sealed with wax before the annual contest.
Two of the bottles are filled with beer and the third, known as the dummy, is made of solid wood and painted red-and-white.
A poster on the event's Facebook page reads: 'The history of the Hallaton Bottle Kicking and Hare Pie Scrambling has links that could well date back over 1,000 years to pagan times.
'The event carries many of the centuries-old customs and practices to this day.'
Alicia Kearns, the Conservative MP for Rutland and Stamford, said bottle kicking was 'an Easter tradition like no other'.
In a post on X on Sunday, she said: 'Legend has it that bottle kicking is the game which inspired rugby … and it's taking place tomorrow in Hallaton.
'The historic annual Hallaton Bottle Kicking is an Easter tradition like no other, as the villages of Hallaton and Medbourne battle it out to get three barrels, known as bottles, from the starting field to their own village by any means possible.'
The event on Monday afternoon was preceded by a parade led by the Nene Valley Pipe Band and the ceremonial slicing up and distribution of a hare pie.
The winning team celebrates by being lifted onto Hallaton's historic stone Butter Cross and the opened bottle is passed up for players to drink from before being handed around the crowd.

Cyberpunk 2077 Nintendo Switch 2 performance review
After spending a considerable amount of time testing Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch 2, and comparing it to the experience on Steam Deck, the results will probably surprise you. Cyberpunk 2077 is out now on Nintendo Switch 2. So, how does it run, and how does it compare with other devices like the Steam Deck? Let's dive in. First, let's get technical. How you experience Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch 2 depends on which mode you're playing it in, and also, how you're playing it. When the Switch 2 is docked, there are two different graphical modes available in CD Projekt Red' s title: Performance mode and Quality mode. Performance prioritises frame rate over resolution, while quality mode prioritises visuals over frame rate. In Performance mode when docked, Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 1080p and targets 40fps with the frame rate being uncapped. In Quality mode, when docked, it again runs at 1080p, but the frame is capped at 30fps, with the game targeting 30fps. I was super impressed by the console's performance generally in my Nintendo Switch 2 review, but what about Cyberpunk 2077 specifically? Docked performance test When looking at footage of both modes side by side, there's a negligible difference, so I prefer performance mode for that reason, as you get the smoother experience and slightly higher framerate. You really do have to start pixel peeping to the max in order to spot any real differences when you're actively playing the game. There's maybe a small difference in sharpness, shadows, and lighting here and there, but unless you're really, really looking, it's going to be pretty hard to spot. Where you can see a difference is when V looks in the mirror right at the start of a new game, if you've chosen the Nomad starting option. There's slightly more fuzziness in the performance mode, maybe due to the different type of DLSS being used, and you can see the added sharpness in quality mode. But that's about it; they're very, very similar. Docked performance test – Now let's compare the Switch 2 in performance mode against the Steam Deck, running at 1080p resolution when docked. We set the Steam Deck to the Steam Deck graphics preset and FSR 3 in Balanced mode. And personally, although they are pretty close, I prefer the Switch 2. I think the image looks less grainy, slightly sharper and probably slightly smoother too in terms of average frames, although it's hard to say definitively without an fps counter on Switch 2. Handheld performance test Let's talk about the handheld experience now. On Switch 2 in Quality mode, Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 1080p resolution, targeting 30fps, and it's also locked to 30fps. When in Performance mode during handheld sessions, the game runs at 720p resolution but with the frame rate limit unlocked, aiming for 40 frames per second. And it's here you can see a clear difference in image quality, which you would expect considering the resolution differences. The DLSS AI upscaling utilised is far more noticeable in Performance mode, in my opinion, with more artifacting and just generally a fuzzier image. But in terms of frame rate, both modes felt pretty consistent and smooth. So I'd say the 40 and 30 fps claims are about right in these modes. And personally, I prefer playing Quality mode when on handheld, just for the added sharpness. But Performance mode is also a good option for players who want smoother gameplay. I will also say that when travelling at super high speeds, I did get the game to chug and stutter a little bit, even when docked, so that's something to be wary of, as it's loading a lot of textures at once. I would also mention that the crowd density is low – about the same as the Steam Deck preset – and it's a lot, lot lower than you would get on Xbox Series X, PS5 or PC. Compared to those platforms, the game does feel significantly emptier. Handheld performance test Now let's compare how the handheld experience with the Switch 2 compares to the Steam Deck, with Valve 's device running at 1280 x 800, which is the screen's native resolution. And when looking at the side by sides, even with the Switch 2 running in performance mode at 720p, in my opinion, the game looks much better on Nintendo 's console and also has the frame rates to match too; maybe not in the highs, but definitely more consistent frame rates with the Switch 2. For me, there's just no comparison about which is a better experience: Nintendo's console looks and feels better. Overall, I think CD Projekt Red have done a great job optimising this AAA title to run on Nintendo's latest console. The idea that Cyberpunk 2077 could run on a Nintendo console at all, even just a few years ago, would have been ridiculous, so the fact that it's running at this level of performance is a superb achievement. Obviously, if you're running this game on a current-gen console or a more expensive gaming handheld, or even a PC, you're clearly going to get much, much better performance. But for those who want to experience third-party games on Switch 2 for the first time, you can now play games like Cyberpunk 2077 on this platform, and have a good experience, which is awesome!. And if this game can run on this console, the world really is Nintendo's oyster, as well as all of the major game developers out there. I mean, where's Call of Duty, Microsoft? We're waiting!

Football community pays tribute to 20-year-old player from Lochmaben who died after battling cancer
The footballing community have paid tribute to a 20-year-old footballer from Dumfries and Galloway who has died after a battle with cancer. Charlie Watson, from Lochmaben, was diagnosed with stage four skin cancer in 2023 but continued to play the sport he loved while undergoing chemotherapy. He played for Queen of the South and Dalbeattie Star before signing for Threave Rovers in 2024. They have described Charlie as an "absolute warrior" who was a "true inspiration." The West of Scotland league side said: "Charlie was more than just a player. He was an absolute warrior, a pillar of our club, and a true inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. "His strength, determination, and heart both on and off the pitch defined him, and his loss leaves a void that words cannot fill. "We will ensure his legacy lives on, honouring his memory in every way we can. "The entire club is devastated by this loss, but Charlie's spirit will forever remain a part of us." Charlie and his family have fundraised almost £70,000 to fund research into a cure for nodular malignant melanoma since his diagnosis. Posted on the Facebook Charlie Boys' Cancer Fundraiser, his mum said: "We are beyond proud of the journey our Charlie boy has fought… We are devastated and absolutely heartbroken, we can't even believe we are writing this, however our beautiful Charlie passed away at home this morning. "He never understood the impact he had on so many people all over the world… You may not not be here now but you will always be with us."

Lidl just dropped ‘spectacular' new bakery item — and it only costs 79p
Lidl's in-store bakery boasts more than 40 items, with everything from brownies to boules and Belgian buns. But eagle-eyed shoppers have noticed a brand new item was just added to the line-up and it stands out from the rest thanks to its colourful toppings. The budget retailer has launched a Birthday Cake Bun in the bakery, priced at 79p and it features a pale pink icing and rainbow sprinkles. From the outside, it looks like a rather standard iced bun, but inside it's hiding a fabulous fruity pink swirl. Online reactions to the new supermarket product have been mixed so far, after @newfoodsuk shared a snap of the bun on Facebook and Instagram. Some thought it looked 'yum' and 'nice' while others claimed they'd tried it and it was 'too dry for them'. So Metro decided to put the Birthday Cake Bun to the test and find out if it's worth buying, and it certainly went down a treat. James Besanvalle, Metro's assistant opinion editor, rated it a 4.5 out of 5, hailing it as 'fantastic'. He said: 'Lidl's new Birthday Cake Bun combines all the best elements of a doughnut (pink icing and sprinkles) with a scroll-like bun (jam-filled and soft in the middle). Sure, it's sweet – but who really wants a birthday cake that's not? Supremely satisfying.' And Metro's specialist food writer, Courtney Pochin, also gave one a try. While James ate his on the day of purchase, Courtney took hers home to see how it would fare the next day and she was pretty impressed by how it held up. 'As someone who eats cake and pastries for a living, I've never been the biggest fan of supermarket baked goods. They just can't compete with homemade treats from independent bakeries,' she said. 'However, the Birthday Cake Bun was a pleasant surprise.' She continued: 'After a day sat on my desk and a night in the cupboard, I didn't have high hopes for the bun, which looked rather sad and dry when I plated it up. But I'm pleased to report that somehow it had managed to stay soft instead of going stale (not going to think too much about why this might be right now). 'It's a fun twist on a classic and I have to admit I probably enjoyed it more than most people will as I realised I haven't actually had an iced bun in years. 'There's something so spectacularly nostalgic about the taste of one and it went down very nicely with a cup of tea. 'My only real gripe is that Lidl has scrimped on the hundreds and thousands on top and they're not spread out evenly. In my book, there's no such thing as too many sprinkles. 'It loses a point for poor sprinkle form, so it's a 4 out of 5 from me' Lidl isn't the only supermarket with new baked goods on its shelves, as Tesco recently wowed shoppers with its brand new chocolate cake. The retailer has teamed up with Studio Bakery, a family-run bakery business from Lancashire, to start selling the brand's giant slices of cake inspired by a nostalgic favourite – you know, that one you always wanted to reach through the screen and smash your face into in Matilda. The aptly named Matilda Cake, is a beast of a chocolate cake slice that claims to serve 10 and sees 12 layers of chocolate sponge and 12 layers of ganache stacked one on top of the other. More Trending Priced at £16 for the slice, (which is meant to serve 10 people) the product can be found in Tesco's bigger stores, but not the Express ones. On social media, shoppers have hailed it the 'best chocolate cake they've ever had', with Frankie French posting in the Food Finds UK Official group to say: 'Best chocolate cake I've ever tried, this Studio Bakery Big Matilda Cake. Can't wait to be able to buy it in Tesco.' But Metro's Courtney Pochin thinks there's a better chocolate cake out there and that's Bertha.
