
390 Varanasi gram panchayats now under CCTV surveillance
Villages in 390 gram panchayats of this district had been equipped with CCTV cameras to bolster security arrangements there as part of Operation Trinetra, a senior government official said, adding these devices were solar powered, and equipped with night vision and sound recording facilities.
'As many as 2,190 night-vision CCTV cameras have been installed in 390 gram panchayats of Varanasi...' said chief development officer Himanshu Nagpal, who is supervising the Trinetra initiative in the district.
He added over the next two months, 1,500 more such cameras would be installed in the remaining 229 grams panchayats. A central command and control room would be set up at Vikas Bhavan from where all the cameras could be monitored, he added.
On an average, five CCTV cameras were being installed to monitor the main streets and entry and exit paths in the gram panchayats.
'Panchayat Bhavans and government primary and upper primary schools in these gram panchayats have also been equipped with a CCTV camera each,' he added.
All these cameras had been linked with police stations and offices of the block education officers of the respective areas, said Nagpal adding the BDO would monitor the schools through the cameras, said Nagpal.
'Control rooms are being set up at every developmental block and the cameras will be connected with them for regular monitoring,' he added.

Panchayat officer, GRS suspended for swindling Rs 1.5cr of govt funds
Berhampur: The Kandhamal administration has suspended the panchayat executive officer (PEO) and a former gram rozgar sevak (GRS) of Durgapanga panchayat for allegedly misappropriating over Rs 1.50 crore of development funds in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Sethi is now assistant data entry operator in Gumma panchayat, sources said. "We conducted an inquiry through assistant executive officers (finance and administration) of the zilla parishad (ZP) after getting a complaint from the block development officer (BDO) of Kotagarh recently," Sambhu Nath Nandi, chief executive officer of the ZP, said on Sunday. Besides office documents, they also conducted field visits fields to enquire into the allegations. "The inquiry revealed that the duo misappropriated over Rs 24.82 lakh from the Central Finance Commission (CFC) fund, Rs 21.51 lakh from the State Finance Commission (SFC) fund and around Rs 1.08 crore from MGNREGS from 2023 to 2025," he said. Earlier, several people had alleged the duo had misappropriated funds without executing works. He said they also filed a complaint against the duo with the vigilance department to take appropriate legal action. "The anti-corruption agency is enquiring into the matter," he added. Involvement of the sarpanch in the corruption was being probed. Vigilance sleuths would also enquire about the misappropriation of govt funds and those involved in the corruption, sources said. "We have formed a special team at the district level. The team visits the spot to take stock, if they get any complaint about corruption," said Nandi.

Puri collector, SP review Alarnath Temple security
Puri: District collector (Puri) Siddharth Shankar Swain and SP Vinit Agrawal on Tuesday reviewed the security arrangements at Alarnath Temple in Brahmagiri. On the occasion, a coordination meeting was held between Swain, Agrawal, Alarnath temple servitors and the local administration. Raniganj BDO caught taking bribe of Rs1.5 lakh
Araria: Raniganj block development officer (BDO) and executive assistant Aditya Priyadarshi were arrested on Tuesday night while accepting a of Rs 1.5 lakh. The arrests were made by a led by DSP Chandrabhushan, who subsequently took both officials to Patna for further proceedings. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to a reliable source, Kalanand Singh, the up-pramukh of Raniganj Block, had filed a complaint against BDO Chauhan for demanding an advance bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh. This bribe was allegedly sought before releasing a pending payment of Rs 15 lakh for completed development work – the demanded amount being 10% of the total. In a trap laid by the vigilance team, Rs 1.5 lakh in cash was handed over to Priyadarshi after a phone conversation with the BDO. Shortly thereafter, Priyadarshi proceeded to deliver the money to the BDO at his residence. As he was doing so, the vigilance team entered the premises and caught both officials red-handed. The bribe money was found in the hands of the BDO at the time of the arrest.
