SYDNEY (Reuters) -The Australia-New Zealand Invitational XV to face the British & Irish Lions in Adelaide this weekend features eight All Blacks and six Wallabies with winger AJ Lam the only uncapped player in the starting line-up.
A powerhouse back row featuring Hoskins Sotutu, Pete Samu and Shannon Frizell is bound to test the Lions at Adelaide Oval on Saturday in their final run out before the test series.
Two-cap All Black Folau Fakatava will link up with one-cap Wallaby Tane Edmed in the halves but there is plenty of test experience in a backline featuring centres Ngani Laumape and David Havili as well as winger Marika Koroibete.
Wallabies lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and All Black Havili will co-captain the team, which has been coached by Les Kiss with the assistance of former New Zealand boss Ian Foster, Simon Cron and Zane Hilton.
"After speaking with all the players we thought the co-captaincy model with natural leaders like David and Lukhan would really suit this team and what we represent," said Kiss, who will take over from Joe Schmidt as Wallabies coach next year.
"This week has been building nicely and the boys have put a lot of time into getting to know each other. In forming new bonds many of them have discovered they have more in common than they originally thought.
"We have named an experienced, powerful starting side for Saturday and we know our bench will make an impact when they get their opportunity."
The Lions have won their first four tour games against Australia's Super Rugby teams and also face a First Nations & Pasifika XV between the first test on July 19 in Brisbane and the second test a week later in Melbourne.

Rugby-Lions look to history, Wallabies to pride in series finale

FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Australia v British and Irish Lions - Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia - July 26, 2025 British and Irish Lions' Bundee Aki in action James Ross/AAP Image via REUTERS/File Photo SYDNEY (Reuters) -The British & Irish Lions have history on their minds as they head into Saturday's third and final clash with the Wallabies determined to sweep a test series for the first time in living memory. No Lions team have even gone unbeaten in a test series since Willie John McBride's Invincibles in South Africa in 1974, when a controversial draw in the fourth match denied them the sweep. The Lions did sweep Argentina 4-0 in 1927 and also beat the Wallabies 2-0 three times in the 1950s and 1960s as part of losing tours of New Zealand, but you would need to go back to 1904 for the last 3-0 triumph on a trip solely to Australia. For coach Andy Farrell, however, the importance of the sweep is simply that it was something the Lions had committed to achieving as a squad before heading to Australia. "Hopefully (the tour) will be remembered for the type of rugby that we played and the way that we went about it together. That's it," he said after naming his team on Thursday. "We came here wanting to win a series. We've achieved that, but we've a massive responsibility to make sure that we finish this off with something that we promised ourselves." In keeping with that spirit, Farrell made only minor tweaks to his team for the Stadium Australia clash, bringing Blair Kinghorn in on the wing, James Ryan into the second row and an extra forward onto the bench. For Australia, Saturday is all about salvaging some pride after losing the second test, and the series, to a last-minute try in Melbourne last week. The Wallabies have proved they can play by "winning" the second half of the opening test 14-10 in Brisbane and taking a 23-5 lead after half an hour of the second in Melbourne. Coach Joe Schmidt said it had been difficult to pick the players up after the defeat but thought they should not ignore the progress they have made since he took over last year. "My belief is that 18 months ago, no one gave us a chance of challenging the Lions," he said. "(But) there's not been nearly as much between the teams as maybe people might have expected." Flanker Rob Valetini and two other starters from last week will miss the match because of injury but Schmidt made a choice to bring scrumhalf Nic White into the team for his last test before he retires from international rugby. The New Zealander denied it was a sentimental selection, citing White's kicking skills in what are expected to be wet conditions, but was certain he would get an emotional dividend from the rest of the team. "When you make that contribution over 12 years, it's not sentimentality, but it is a reality when someone is important to the group, the group want to support them," he said. Rugby-Lions make two changes for final Australia test

FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Six Nations Championship - Scotland v Wales - Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, Scotland, Britain - March 8, 2025 Scotland's Blair Kinghorn in action with Wales' Tomos Williams REUTERS/Russell Cheyne/File Photo SYDNEY (Reuters) -British & Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell has made only two changes to his starting team for final test against Australia on Saturday, when the tourists will be looking to seal a 3-0 series sweep. Farrell has resisted the temptation to give fringe players a run despite the series already being decided as the Lions target getting through a test series unbeaten for the first time since 1974. Blair Kinghorn, who missed the first test because of a knee injury, replaces James Lowe on the left wing as he did during last week's second test victory in Melbourne, while James Ryan starts in the second row in place of Ollie Chessum. Chessum drops to the bench, where Ben Earl comes in as back row cover alongside Jac Morgan with Farrell opting for a 6-2 split in favour of the forwards for what is forecast to be a wet weather test at Stadium Australia. The starting back row and halfback pairing remain the same for the third consecutive match, while Irish prop Tadhg Furlong will start his ninth straight Lions test in the front row. "Last weekend's test match in Melbourne was an incredible spectacle and illustrated how special Lions tours are and what they mean to both the players and the supporters," Farrell said in a news release. "We are expecting another epic battle this weekend against a Wallaby side that showed their quality last week." Team: 15–Hugo Keenan, 14–Tommy Freeman, 13–Huw Jones, 12–Bundee Aki, 11–Blair Kinghorn, 10–Finn Russell, 9–Jamison Gibson-Park, 8–Jack Conan, 7–Tom Curry, 6–Tadhg Beirne, 5–James Ryan, 4–Maro Itoje, 3–Tadhg Furlong, 2–Dan Sheehan, 1–Andrew Porter Replacements: 16–Ronan Kelleher, 17–Ellis Genge, 18–Will Stuart, 19–Ollie Chessum, 20–Jac Morgan, 21–Ben Earl, 22–Alex Mitchell, 23–Owen Farrell (Reporting by Nick Mulvenney, editing by Peter Rutehrford)

Rugby-Wallaby White to retire from test rugby after Lions series finale

FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Autumn International - Wales v Australia - Principality Stadium, Cardiff, Wales, Britain - November 20, 2021 Australia's Nic White in action Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers/File Photo SYDNEY (Reuters) -Wallabies scrumhalf Nic White will retire from international rugby after the third test against the British & Irish Lions this weekend, Rugby Australia said on Thursday. The 35-year-old halfback is expected to win his 73rd cap in place of Jake Gordon at Sydney's Stadium Australia on Saturday in a match Australia need to win to avoid a 3-0 series sweep. White, familiar to fans the world over for his distinctive moustache, missed the 2013 series against the Lions through injury but played in two World Cups for his country. "Pulling on the gold jersey was a dream of mine when I was a young boy ... and to say I've done it 72 times, with one last crack on Saturday night, is something I'm incredibly proud of," White said in a Rugby Australia news release. "There's been great competition for the nine jersey here in the Wallabies for a number of years and it feels like the right time to pass on the baton ..." White would probably have won more test caps had he not spent five years in Europe with Montpellier and Exeter Chiefs before returning to Canberra with the ACT Brumbies in 2020. "First and foremost Nic is a great man to have in a squad. He's team first all the time and has been at the top of the game for over a decade," said Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt. "Having coached against Whitey, and now worked with him in the Wallabies environment, he's the ultimate competitor." Schmidt will name his team for the third test later on Thursday.
