Weather updates: Delhi, Karnataka to see rainfall and thunderstorms; IMD forecasts above-normal temperatures for May

Mint01-05-2025

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that most parts of the country will likely witness above-normal temperatures in May. However, occasional thunderstorms may keep the heat from reaching the severe levels seen in 2024.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said on Wednesday that the number of heatwave days is expected to be higher than normal, by one to four days, in most parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal.
He also said that some areas of Gujarat, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, adjoining Telangana, and north Karnataka are expected to see above-normal heatwave days.
The IMD director general further said most parts of the country will likely receive normal to above-normal rainfall, except for some areas in the northwest, central and northeast India.
Rainfall over north India is expected to be above normal, more than 109 per cent of the long-period average of 64.1 mm.
The IMD has predicted rain, cloudy skies and thunderstorms in Delhi from May 1 to 3.
The national capital, reeling under the heatwave, recorded a maximum temperature of 38.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 28.8 degrees Celsius.
The weather department's weekly forecast says thunderstorms with rain are expected on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, which may lead to a slight dip in temperatures.
It also forecast cloudy skies, very light rain or drizzle and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, dust storms and strong surface winds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph, during the afternoon and evening.
Himachal Pradesh is set to experience a break from the summer heat. Light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and even snowfall in higher altitudes are predicted over the next week.
The IMD has issued a 'yellow alert' for the state's lower and mid-hill districts, warning of possible thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Speaking to ANI, Shobhit Katiyar, Senior Scientist at the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, said light rainfall was recorded in three districts, and more will continue across Himachal.
"Light rainfall was recorded in Kinnaur district, and parts of Shimla and Sirmaur districts over the past 24 hours. Yesterday evening's forecast indicated this activity, which has played out as expected." Shobhit said.
"Over the same period, Una district recorded the highest temperature in the state at 38.6°C, while the temperature in Shimla stood at 15.5°C. Despite the onset of this weather system, Katiyar noted that 'temperatures in some regions are still 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal.
The meteorological department has predicted moderate rainfall and thunderstorms in parts of Karnataka during peak summer.
According to the IMD forecast, a cyclonic circulation has formed in the Bay of Bengal and is moving towards Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This will lead to rain in multiple districts, such as Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Tumkur, Davangere, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Bellary, Chitradurga, and Mandya.
The rain and accompanying thunderstorm are expected to continue till May 6, the IMD said.

Southwest monsoon to advance over Gujarat, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Odisha in next 24 hours: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast further progress of the southwest monsoon. In the next 24 hours, it is expected to advance into parts of Gujarat, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. Over the following three days, it is likely to spread to parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and East Uttar Pradesh. The southwest monsoon, crucial for kharif agriculture, has already covered southern states, north eastern states and some parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. There is good news for residents of northwest India who have been reeling under severe heat. The IMD has forecast a significant dip in maximum temperatures—by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius—over the region in the next 24 hours. Central India, on the other hand, will see little change in daytime temperatures for now, followed by a gradual drop of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the subsequent five days. On Saturday, Churu in Rajasthan recorded a searing maximum of 46.5°C. Many parts of East Uttar Pradesh, North Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh continued to witness scorching conditions with temperatures in the 42–46°C range. Amid strong winds and heavy rain activity, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea from 15 to 20 June. Dangerous conditions are expected over the Arabian Sea and adjoining regions, including the coasts off Somalia, Oman, Yemen, Comorin, Konkan, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep and the Maldives. Conditions are expected to be rough in the southeast and east-central Arabian Sea as well as off the South and entire Gujarat coasts. IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall across most parts of Gujarat between 15 and 17 June, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Between 15 and 21 June, light to moderate rainfall is expected across Gujarat, with isolated heavy showers in Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra and Kutch. Extremely heavy rainfall—over 20 cm in 24 hours—is forecast at isolated spots in Konkan and Goa on 15 and 16 June, suggesting an intense monsoon spell. From 15 to 20 June, light to moderate rainfall is expected across a broad swathe of eastern and central India. Areas likely to be affected include the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. The weather is also expected to turn stormy in some places, with the IMD warning of possible thundersqualls over Jharkhand, West and East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Bihar on 15 and 16 June. The IMD has also forecast light to moderate rainfall over parts of northwest India between 15 and 21 June. These showers may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Thundersquall activity is expected over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan during this period. Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh through the week.

Solar-Powered Water Lift System Helps Cheetah Cubs Survive Heat In Kuno

New Delhi: A solar-powered water lift system has emerged as a lifeline for the cheetah cubs born in Kuno National Park this summer, helping them survive extremely hot and harsh conditions. Temperatures soared to the high 40s across northwest and central India this June, putting immense pressure on water resources. Video 1/2 — Uttam Kumar Sharma (@Uttam_K_Sharma) June 15, 2025 In May 2023, three cubs born to Namibian cheetah Jwala died due to extreme heat in the national park in Madhya Pradesh. Learning from that experience, authorities have installed a solar-powered system to pump water from the Kuno river and transport it through an 8.6-km-long pipeline to sprinklers and water saucers at more than 15 locations inside the park. "Lifting water from Kuno river, taking it kilometres away, using sprinklers extensively to create green spaces, and improving water availability, especially for mother and new-born cubs in a planned way, have proved quite successful," according to video posted on X by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Cheetah Project Director, Uttam Kumar Sharma. 2/2 Lifting water from Kuno river, taking it Kms away and extensive use of sprinklers for creating green spaces and improve water availability especially for mother and new born cubs in a planned way were quite successful… — Uttam Kumar Sharma (@Uttam_K_Sharma) June 15, 2025 'The importance of water is felt only in its absence and it is nowhere as pronounced as in Kuno during peak summer... Under the incessant pummelling of hot winds called 'loo' and temperatures bordering 48 degrees Celsius, life becomes very difficult for wildlife, particularly the young ones,' it said. South African cheetah Veera gave birth to two cubs in February 2025, while another South African cheetah, Nirva, gave birth to five cubs in April. Two of Nirva's cubs died, but officials said the rest are doing well. The officials said the cubs were experiencing such harsh conditions for the first time and both the mothers and their offspring were regularly using the water points, indicating the success of the initiative. Launched in September 2022, 70 years after the species was declared extinct in the country, India's cheetah reintroduction project is among the most ambitious conservation efforts in recent history. As part of the project, 20 African cheetahs were brought to Kuno: eight from Namibia in September 2022 and 12 from South Africa in February 2023. Since then, 26 cheetah cubs have been born in India. Of these, 17 survived. Eleven cubs are roaming free in the wild, while the others are in enclosures at Kuno.
