BREAKING: Tributes pour in as rock legend dies aged 71
David Thomas, founding member of influential American rock band Pere Ubu, has died at age 71 'after a long illness.'
'On Wednesday, April 23 2025, he died in his home town of Brighton & Hove, with his wife and youngest step-daughter by his side,' the band to their Facebook page. 'He will ultimately be returned to his home, the farm in Pennsylvania, where he insisted he was to be 'thrown in the barn.''
Pere Ubu had been recording a new album with Thomas and have said they would continue to work on it 'so that his last music is available to all.'
'Aside from that, he left instruction that the work should continue to catalog all the tapes from live shows via the official bandcamp page,' they added. 'His autobiography was nearly completed and we will finish that for him.'
Thomas formed his first band, Rocket From the Tombs, in 1974. Despite exciting live performances and an influence on proto-punk, the band was shortlived and never recorded any material.
Pere Ubu would be created shortly after, with Thomas, Peter Laughner, Tim Wright, Allen Ravenstine, Scott Krauss and Tom Herman.
The band split after five albums by 1982, reforming in 1987. While the lineup had changed somewhat between 1975 and 1982, after the revival Thomas would remain as the sole founding member, with a supporting band of over 20 regularly shifting names.
While Thomas' tastes would evolve over the years, he and Pere Ubu are hailed as a considerable influence on the punk and post-punk movements, despite his resistance to the labels.
Alongside Pere Ubu, Thomas would work on a variety of side projects, including multiple Rocket From the Tombs reunions in the 2000s which saw the group release their first studio album, Rocket Redux .

What do Yoko Ono, Meghan Markle and Nicola Peltz have in common? Apart from being: (a) minted; (b) female, and (c) married to past and present versions of British royalty? Hint — it's to do with (c). First Yoko, then Meghan, now Nicola. Each has been accused of abducting their British spouse and trafficking them to the US, where they were/ are being held in diamond-encrusted captivity, 'controlled' by their conniving lady wives. Not literally. Not like Jeffrey Epstein — more of an emotional trafficking, with each of the three hapless husbands going seven shades of Patty Hearst, professing love for their captors as the British tabloids continue to go through cycles of performative apoplexy with side bars of conjecture, 'insiders' and 'sources'. Older readers will remember how Yoko broke up The Beatles, while the more contemporaneous recognise how Meghan Markle broke up the British royal family. And now Nicola Peltz is breaking up Britain's other royal family, the Golden Spice Balls dynasty. Nicola who? For those still stubbornly refusing to spend their lives online keeping up with the far grander lives of American billionaire heiresses, this column is here to fill in your blanks. Nicola Peltz is married to Brooklyn Beckham, first born of David and Victoria. Brooklyn — named after the geographical location his mother first discovered she was pregnant with him (imagine if she'd been in Merthyr Tydfil) — is currently married to Ms Peltz and engaged in a 'feud' with Brand Beckham, conducted via cryptic Instagram posts and a marked absence from his dad's 50th birthday shenanigans. Beckham Jnr appears to have, as they say in Leytonstone, the right hump. So how is this Beckham internecine situation the fault of his American billionaire heiress wife? You may well ask. Just as Prince Harry, having married another wealthy American, had the right hump with the Windsors, British tabloids found it more convenient to blame Ms Markle for her husband's distancing himself from his family of origin. This raised two questions — how dare Ms Markle fill Harry's head with Californian nonsense about being happy, and what kind of royal would choose Californian sunshine over a lifetime of unveiling statues in the rain and asking people if they'd come far. Rather than accept that John Lennon no longer wanted to be a Beatle, or that Harry Windsor no longer wanted to be a prince, nor can the UK media get its head around how young Brooklyn, vendor of hot sauce, taker of blurry elephant photos, and poster baby of nepo, no longer wants to be a brand ambassador for the family firm. A bit of woman-blaming is therefore required. Hence the acreage devoted to alleged antipathy between Ms Peltz and Mummy Beckham, because bitchfights make clickbait. Meghan Markle had an entire palace media ecosystem to grapple with, while Yoko Ono endured the double whammy of being a woman and a foreigner who nicked a national treasure and spirited him away to New York and a life of radical creativity. Obviously Brooklyn Beckham, with his terrible photos and daft tatts, is far from a Beatle or a prince — but that's not stopping the narrative of helpless man stolen by a pushy woman being wheeled out again. 'I found David Beckham's wallet, his reply surprised me when I asked for reward'
Basketball icon Shaquille O'Neal once stumbled upon David Beckham's wallet lying on the ground - and joked about charging a massive sum for its return. The two have been friends for years, having met during Beckham's time with the LA Galaxy in Los Angeles, California. Shaq, who previously played for the LA Lakers, recalled that he initially thought about keeping the cash he found, but changed his mind once he realised who the wallet belonged to. "I was walking one day in Beverly Hills and I found a wallet," the 53-year-old recalled during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden. "Usually when I find wallets, I just take all the money out and I just throw them," he joked. "But this was a nice wallet." After noticing Beckham's ID inside, he chose to pull a light-hearted stunt on the football legend by posing as someone who wanted a reward. "First I played a joke," the American said. "I was like, 'I have your wallet, it's going to cost you a million dollars to get it back'. But he knew it was me. [Beckham said] 'Shaq, stop playing'. I was like 'Dave, I found your wallet'. The funny thing is he [Beckham] said, 'There was some money in this wallet, you know what happened?' And I was like, 'Nope.'" Shaq, who ended his basketball career in 2012, is recognised as one of the sport's greatest figures, Mirror UK reports. Towering at 7ft 1in, he secured four NBA titles - three with the Lakers during the Kobe Bryant era and one with the Miami Heat. In 2000, he was honoured as NBA MVP and earned 15 All-Star appearances over a distinguished career that also included stints with the Orlando Magic, the Phoenix Suns, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics. Beckham wrapped up his professional football career a year after O'Neal in 2013, after playing for elite clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and PSG. He also represented England 115 times and wore the captain's armband for six years. Though now based in the UK with his wife Victoria, Beckham still travels frequently across the Atlantic. He is a part-owner of MLS franchise Inter Miami, who made headlines in 2023 by signing Lionel Messi.
