Thomas needs drama to advance; Finney rolls to semis
Olivia Zizzo found Olivia Bommelje for a game winning four yard touchdown with 35 seconds left as the Titans rallied for a Class B quarterfinal win in Webster Monday evening.
Zizzo connected with Olivia Smith on a long touchdown in the first half that leveled Thomas with Athena at six. Just before the half, Anna Forman put the Trojans back in front with a TD throw to Emily McMichael. The conversion throw gave Athena a 13-6 lead at the break.
Thomas scored once in the second half to draw within a point and might have gotten away with a late Zizzo throw for the game winner. She appeared to lose a flag just before her release.
The Titans (11-2) have won five in a row and will move on to face top seeded Arcadia in Thursday's semifinals. Athena finishes the year 10-3.

Lucy Broome had a pair of second half interceptions and Allie Frederickson caught a pair of first half TD passes as the Falcons won a Class C quarterfinal in Penfield Monday.
Finney led 28-0 at the half before dueling #7's started trading interceptions. Broome got her first to stop a fourth down play and actually followed with a 21 yard catch for Finney. The next Falcons throw was caught by Athena Tumbelekis, who wears number 7 for the Panthers.
Geneva did keep possession for long as Broome stepped in front of a throw a couple snaps later and ran it back for a touchdown.
Trinity Maxon had a TD rushing and throwing late for the Panthers, but they could not rally.
It was the fifth consecutive win for the Falcons, who improved to 11-2-1. Next up is a trip to Hornell for a semifinal date with (2)Canisteo-Greenwood Thursday.
Geneva closed their season at 12-6.

Alabama trio named to AP all-time All-America college football team
Throughout the program's storied past, the Alabama Crimson Tide have seen countless players receive All-America honors, many of which have been among the greatest to ever play college football at their respective position. However, have you ever wondered, just which of those all-time Alabama greats are considered among the best-of-the-best in college football history? Well, the Associated Press (AP) recently released its' all-time All-America college football team, with a total of three Alabama players named. Of those three, two were First Team selections in John Hannah and Derrick Thomas, while DeVonta Smith was named to the Second Team. Hannah, named as an offensive guard, spent three seasons at Alabama from 1970-72 under head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, and is considered one of the greatest lineman in Crimson Tide history. While at Alabama, Hannah was a two-time All-America selection in 1971-72, the second of which was unanimous, and went on to have a memorable NFL career that resulted in both a College and Pro Football Hall of Fame induction. Thomas played at Alabama for four seasons from 1985-88, and is still to this day considered among the best to ever wear a Crimson Tide uniform. The linebacker, who is Alabama's all-time sack leader, was a two-time All-America selection in 1987-88, the latter of which was unanimous, while also winning the 1988 Butkus Award during a career that resulted in a College and Pro Football Hall of Fame induction. Smith is Alabama's all-time leading receiver, who ended his four-year Crimson Tide career with 3,965 yards from 2017-20. All three of Hannah, Thomas, and Smith were among the greatest to ever play at Alabama, and certainly left their mark on the Crimson Tide, as well as college football overall. Lakers jersey history No. 3/No. 7/No. 31 — Isaiah Thomas
Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary. As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. Let's now take a look back at Isaiah Thomas and his two brief stints with the Lakers not too long ago. Perhaps the story of Thomas' time with the Lakers begins even before he was born. His father was a big Lakers fan, and that father made a bet with a friend that if the team lost in the 1989 NBA Finals, he would name his son after the Detroit Pistons star whose first name was Isiah. The Lakers, who were dealing with hamstring injuries to starting guards Magic Johnson and Byron Scott, got swept, and that is how Thomas got his first name. He emerged as a star at the University of Washington and was a second-round draft pick in 2011 by the Sacramento Kings. Despite standing just 5-foot-9, Thomas became a star within a few years, and once he was traded to the Boston Celtics midway through the 2014-15 season, he helped them rebuild quickly after trading away Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. Thomas made the All-Star team in both of the next two seasons, and during the 2016-17 season, he averaged 28.9 points and 5.9 assists a game, which led to him finishing fifth in the MVP balloting. Unfortunately, during that year's playoffs, he injured his hip, and that ailment triggered his decline. Thomas was traded to the Lakers midway through the 2017-18 season along with Channing Frye and a 2018 first-round draft pick that became Moritz Wagner for Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. He averaged 15.6 points on 38.3% field-goal shooting and 5.0 assists a game while appearing in 17 contests for them, and he would leave as a free agent that July. The guard returned for an even shorter stint on a 10-day contract during the Lakers' chaotic 2021-22 season. He scored 19 points in just 22 minutes in his first game back, but he ended up appearing in just four games that year for them and scored a total of 37 points during that time. Thomas last played in the NBA during the 2023-24 season for the Phoenix Suns, albeit in just six games. Midway through this past season, he joined the G League's Salt Lake City Stars for 14 games, and in just his first contest with them, he poured in 40 points.

Nets' Cam Thomas could boost 2026 NBA free-agency if he takes QO
Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas is still deciding what he is going to do for his next contract as the NBA calendar heads into August, one month before training camp comes around. Brooklyn and Thomas' camp have been slowly going through negotiations as he's trying to see what his options are, but he could have an effect on free-agency next offseason. "The 2026 free agent class could get a boost if current restricted free agents Jonathan Kuminga, Cam Thomas, Quentin Grimes and Josh Giddey sign the one-year qualifying offer before Oct. 1," ESPN's Bobby Marks wrote during his latest article on the NBA landscape at this point in August. Marks was giving a preview of what the 2026 class could look like next summer, but the restricted free-agents (RFAs) from this offseason still have unsettled situations. "They would be unrestricted in 2026 if they take the one-year contract," Marks continued. As Marks alluded to, Thomas has until Oct. 1, 21 days before Brooklyn's season-opener at the Charlotte Hornets, to accept his qualifying offer (QO) if he wants to become an unrestricted free-agent next offseason. The Nets and Thomas could extend the deadline to Mar. 1, but if Thomas doesn't take the QO prior to the deadline, he will remain a restricted free-agent. This summer has proven to be a tough one when it comes to restricted free-agents like Thomas trying to get paid what they're worth because of the leverage that teams have in those scenarios. As Marks mentioned, Thomas isn't the only player having this kind of difficulty, but various insiders and experts have theorized that the former LSU Tiger is the most likely of the four RFAs to take the QO. Thomas' QO, worth $5.99 million, would ensure that he would be an unrestricted free-agent during the 2026 class along with giving him veto rights to any trade over the course of the 2025-26 season. Thomas, 23, is coming off the best season of his career in which he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land during the 2024-25 campaign.
