Beloved items from Fountains Café in Bradford go on display
Items from a beloved café that recently shut have gone on display in one of Bradford's museums.Fountains Café in the Oastler Centre closed its doors in March 2023 after 55 years.Owners Michael and Stella Georgiou said the rise in energy prices and the imminent closure of the Oastler Centre were among the reasons they decided to close.The council's museums and galleries service acquired some of the café's objects after it shut and they have been put on show at Bradford Industrial Museum.
The items have been painstakingly cleaned and restored and are on display in the museum's Café Gallery.Paul and Mary Georgiou opened Fountains Coffee House and Grill in 1968 at Bradford's then newly developed John Street Market (later called the Oastler Shopping Centre).The fabric of the café remained largely unchanged since it opened, and the items on display including unique artwork, the original signage and café furniture all of which reflect the interior design trends of the day.
'Family legacy'
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Chris Georgiou who is the second generation of the family who worked in the cafe alongside his brother Michael, said: "We are delighted to see our family's legacy in Bradford being preserved for all at Bradford Industrial Museum. "We started Fountains Café when the open-air John Street Market was first redeveloped in the 1960s, so it's going to be exciting to see the next chapter of markets in the city centre with the new Darley Street Market and also the changes coming with the new City Village project starting."The original interior of the café was the ideal backdrop for filming, and the cafe was used to film scenes from Funny Cow with Maxine Peake and Alun Armstrong, as well as for the 2013 BBC mini-series The Great Train Robbery staring Jim Broadbent.Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council's executive member for healthy people and places said: "Many Bradfordians will remember being taken to the Fountains Cafe as children, with many returning with their own families later in life."I'm pleased that this little slice of nostalgia has been preserved for future generation to enjoy."

Legendary TV star ‘busy' as he joins Casualty
Soap actor Michael Starke has joined the cast of Casualty in a guest role. The star, best known for his role as Thomas 'Sinbad' Sweeney in Channel 4's Brookside, is set to appear in the medical drama later this year. Michael has previously featured in the show, appearing as a guest in four episodes between 2000 and 2018. In Brookside, Michael's character Sinbad worked as a window cleaner. He was made a regular in 1990, with the star leaving the show in 2000, a few years before the axing. In 2007, the star played Jerry Morton in Coronation Street. He has also briefly appeared in Holby City, Hollyoaks and Doctors. Not much is known about Michael's latest Casualty role at the moment, but his management company have confirmed the role, saying on Instagram that he's 'been busy' at the studios in Wales. The drama was recently put out to competitive tendering, a process that will decide which producer makes the show, though the BBC will retain all the rights for the programme. While this development won't impact the future of the medical drama, it will change the foundations of the series. Casualty is set in the Emergency Department of Holby City Hospital, but this won't be the case once the new production company take over. In an official document from the broadcaster, there is hope the show will 'evolve into Welsh portrayal while maintaining the core attraction to the loyal fan base'. The contract asks tenderers to include 'authentic representation of Wales and reflect the reality of the Welsh NHS'. More info An Edinburgh YouTuber has tested out how budget friendly the capital is - by stretching £50 out in the city's pubs. Michael, who runs the account Edinburgh & Beyond, wanted to see if it was possible to have a day of drinking on a budget. Setting off at around 1pm, Michael and his friend stop off at Platform 5 at Haymarket - spending £11 on two pints of Tennent's. They also visit The Haymarket Bar, The Fox and Faun, The Ghillie Dhu, Mathers, and Scotts. Between the two of them, they spend £91.80 by 7.30pm - meaning Michael spent £45.40, leaving only £4.60 of his budget, on eight drinks. His last, and ninth, drink was poured in The Auld Hundred - taking him just over the budget. Posting to YouTube, Michael said: "Day drinking in Edinburgh on a budget, is Edinburgh affordable? "How long can £50 last? We are on a mission to find out if Edinburgh is affordable or if it is too expensive.
