Nikita Tszyu, Michael Zerafa register crushing wins ahead of potential blockbuster showdown
Rising star Nikita Tszyu and seasoned pro Michael Zerafa lived up to expectations on Wednesday night, each securing dominant victories in their respective bouts. The emphatic performances by the Australian pair have only intensified calls for a blockbuster showdown between them, making it increasingly clear that a clash in the near future is inevitable. Tszyu (11-0, 9 KOs) put on a commanding display, at the ICC Sydney Theatre , against previously unbeaten Macedonian challenger Lulzim Ismaili. After patiently sizing him up early, Tszyu unleashed a series of punishing body shots that dropped Ismaili to the canvas, leaving him clutching his stomach in pain. Though Ismaili survived to hear the end of the opening round, he was unable to answer the bell for the second, prompting the referee to stop the fight and awarding Tszyu the WBO Inter-Continental Super Welterweight title . — ropeadopepod (@ropeadopepod) by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The son of Kostya and younger brother of Tim stepped back into the ring for the first time in nearly a year after undergoing multiple surgeries on his left hand. His last outing came in August 2024, when he stopped Koen Mazoudier in one of the year's most thrilling bouts. While there were questions within his camp about how he would respond against Ismaili, Tszyu erased any doubts, showing neither rust nor hesitation in the single round of action it took to finish the job. Just 25 minutes before Tszyu's statement win, Zerafa (33-5, 21 KOs) delivered a demolition of his own. The outspoken Melbourne fighter dismantled American Mikey Dahlman in under two minutes to claim the WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight title, reminding critics that he's more than just a headline-making trash talker. Live Events Dahlman came into the fight with only one defeat in his previous 19 outings but showed little resistance, struggling to land anything significant before being completely outclassed. While the bout was heavily one-sided, Zerafa still deserves credit for displaying crisp fundamentals and refined technique in the short time it took him to secure the victory. According to ESPN, another name being mentioned as a possible opponent for Tszyu in Australia is Brock Jarvis , who has recently climbed five weight divisions in pursuit of a shot at the undefeated son of the Hall of Famer. Trained by Aussie legend Jeff Fenech, Jarvis rebounded from his March loss to American Keith Thurman with an impressive fourth-round stoppage of rising New Zealand prospect Sam Beck on Wednesday night. All in all, Tszyu's next bout promises to be a true test of his credentials. Whether the challenge comes from Zerafa or Jarvis remains to be seen, but either matchup would mark a significant step forward in his career.

Sinquefield Cup: Gukesh held by Sevian, Pragg draws with Abdusattorov
Last Updated: St. Louis (USA), Aug 21 (PTI) World champion D Gukesh was held to a draw by the lone wild card Samuel Sevian of United States, while fellow Indian R Praggnanandhaa also split the point with Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup here. With his second draw in as many days, Praggnanadhaa remained in the leading group of three players that now include Fabiano Caruana of United States besides the overnight co-leader Armenian-turned-American Levon Aronian. Caruana handed Alireza Firouzja of France his first loss in the tournament in the lone decisive game of the day. Aronian was held to a draw by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France, while another American Wesley So split the point with Duda Jan-Kryzsztof of Poland. With six rounds still to come in the 3,75,000 USD prize money tournament, Praggnanadhaa, Aronian and Caruana share the lead on two points each and they are now followed by Wesley, Firouzja, Vachier-Lagrave, Sevian and Gukesh — who all stand a half point behind. Duda is next in line on one point, while Abdusattorov opened his account to be on a half point from his first three outings here. For Gukesh, first draw in the tournament was rather easy with black pieces. Samuel Sevian tried his hands at the Rosslimo variation against the Sicilian defense but Gukesh was always in control. The middle game arrived and passed smoothly as both players exchanged pieces at regular intervals leading to a drawn endgame. Praggnanandhaa played his first black after two white games and chose the Nimzo-Indian defence wherein Abdusattorov, struggling to find his form, could not get much. The players reached an opposite coloured Bishops endgame where the draw was a just result. It could have been an uneventful day but for Caruana who played a fine positional game to outwit Firouzja. The Fianchetto variation against the Nimzo gave Caruana a spatial advantage as his pieces stood better in the middle game and after a fine grind the American pushed his central passed pawn to the seventh rank for the desired effect. With the top four places in the Grand chess tour at stake for the grand finale later this year, Caruana seemed pleased with his victory. The American observed that Vachier-Lagrave has almost qualified and the rest of the bunch is fighting for the last spots. Results round 3: Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb, 0.5) drew with R Praggnanandhaa (Ind, 2) Fabiano Caruana (Usa, 2) beat Alireza Firouzja (Fra, 1.5); Duda Jan Kryzstof (Pol, 1) drew with Wesley So (Usa, 1.5); Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Fra, 1.5) drew with Levon Aronian (Usa, 1.5) Samuel Sevian (Usa, 1.5) drew with D Gukesh (Ind, 1.5). Lausanne Diamond League: Oblique Seville Edges Out Noah Lyles To Top Spot
Seville produced an effort of 9.87 seconds at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise, as Lyles came in second with a time of 10.02sec. Oblique Seville of Jamaica posted a win at the 100m event at the Lausanne Diamond League on Wednesday as he pipped American Noah Lyles to the top spot in the Swiss City. Seville produced an effort of 9.87 seconds at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise, as Lyles came in second with a time of 10.02sec. 'Running 9.87 in those conditions shows I can go much faster, anywhere in the world, that's a good time," said Seville. 'I've beaten the Olympic champion twice, in London and here, and that gives me a lot of confidence heading into the championships. It's been a while since a Jamaican man has won the 100m at a global championship, and of course, I believe I can be the one to do it." Seville, who won a world bronze as part of the Jamaican 4x100m relay squad in Budapest in 2023, was afforded the lead by Lyles' slow reaction to the gun as the American was left to rue his start, in a repeat of last month's London Diamond League. Only Thing… 'That was the only thing wrong," Lyles said discussing his slow start to the race. 'Technically I felt good, my warm-up was good, but once you miss the start at this level the race is basically over," he said. 'Physically I feel great, and I am confident every race will get better and better. The goal is to sharpen the details, especially my drive phase and my start, heading to Tokyo and the world championships," he added. Hoey Shocks Wanyonyi Kenya's Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi faced a setback as American Josh Hoey clinched victory in the 800m event. Hoey, the reigning world indoor champion, maintained his lead down the home straight, finishing in 1:42.82. 'I wanted to get out hard, let the leaders take the rain, and then make my move with 100 to go," Hoey commented. 'It felt like being a kid again, playing in the rain. I've never raced in anything like this before. It reminded me of cross-country growing up, where it comes down to being the toughest and the most patient." With 200m left to run, Wanyonyi appeared out of contention but fought back to secure second place in 1:43.29, ahead of Spain's Mohamed Attaoui and Briton Max Burgin, with Canadian world champion Marco Arop finishing fifth. In contrast, Britain's Olympic women's 800m gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson experienced no such drama, setting a meet record in the two-lap race with a time of 1:55.69, ahead of Switzerland's Audrey Werro. 'When the pace goes like that, you just forget about everyone else," Hodgkinson said. She returned to the track last week in Silesia after being sidelined for 12 months with hamstring problems following her win at the Paris Games. 'And it paid off with a solid performance. I couldn't have asked for a better start this season." Cordell Tinch continued his impressive season by clocking 12.98 seconds in the men's 110m hurdles. 'I felt great through the warm-up, this is my kind of weather! This result feels great," Tinch said. view comments Location : Switzerland First Published: August 21, 2025, 07:58 IST News sports Lausanne Diamond League: Oblique Seville Edges Out Noah Lyles To Top Spot Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
