Bombs, battles & bullion: Why gold is having a geopolitical moment

Live Events
In recent weeks, global financial markets have been rocked by escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly the outbreak of war between Israel and Iran and renewed hostilities between Ukraine and Russia . These developments have significantly influenced investor sentiment, driving a surge in demand for safe-haven assets—most notably, gold The conflict between Israel and Iran intensified dramatically in the second week of June 2025, following Israel's airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities and missile sites. These strikes reportedly killed senior Iranian military officials and top nuclear scientists, prompting swift retaliation from Iran in the form of drone and missile attacks.Late on Saturday, US President Donald Trump said American forces struck Iran's three main nuclear sites, and he warned Tehran it would face more devastating attacks if it does not agree to peace. The escalation has raised fears of a broader regional war in the Middle East, a region critical to global energy supplies and stability. As a result, gold prices have surged, with overseas spot gold nearing an all-time high of $3,451 per ounce last week. Meanwhile, in the domestic futures market, prices tested a record high of Rs 99,929 per ten grams. This spike reflects heightened investor anxiety and a flight to safety amid growing uncertainty. Historically, gold has served as a hedge against geopolitical risk, and the current crisis has reaffirmed its role as a refuge in turbulent times. While the Israel-Iran war has dominated headlines, the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to exert pressure on global markets. The prolonged war has disrupted energy supplies, strained European economies, and contributed to inflationary pressures worldwide. These factors have reinforced the bullish outlook for gold. Investors are increasingly wary of prolonged instability and its implications for global growth, prompting them to diversify away from riskier assets and into gold.Beyond geopolitical factors, macroeconomic conditions have also played a crucial role in shaping gold's trajectory. Recent U.S. inflation data came in softer than expected, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising just 0.1% in May 2025. This has strengthened expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, potentially as early as September 2025.Lower interest rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold, making it more attractive to investors. Additionally, central banks—particularly in China and Russia—have continued to accumulate physical gold as part of their strategy to diversify away from the U.S. dollar. This sustained demand has contributed to a 29 percent increase in gold prices so far this year. In the last two-years, gold has risen by over 70 percent.Looking ahead, the underlying drivers—geopolitical risk, inflation concerns, and monetary policy shifts—remain firmly in place. This may prompt gold to trade near record highs. In addition, the dual impact of the Israel-Iran war and Ukraine-Russia conflict has created a potent mix of risk factors that are unlikely to dissipate soon. The recent surge in gold prices underscores the metal's enduring appeal as a safe-haven asset during times of geopolitical and economic turmoil. As the world grapples with the fallout from the Israel-Iran war and the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, investors are likely to maintain their bullish stance on gold. With central banks signaling dovish policies and global risks mounting, gold remains a cornerstone of defensive investment strategies in 2025.(The author is Head of Commodities, Geojit Investments)(Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views, and opinions given by experts are their own. 'Pray it doesn't escalate into WW3,' says Former J-K DGP SP Vaid on US strikes in Iran

Shesh Paul Vaid, the former Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed grave concerns over the potential escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict as the United States joined in on the hostilities by striking three Iranian nuclear facilities. Vaid said that he hopes Iran does not attack US facilities or bases, claiming that the response of the US to that would be "doomsday for the world." "If Iran attacks US facilities or US bases in the region, then the US will respond in a big way, and it can escalate into World War III. I only pray to God that it doesn't happen; otherwise, it will be doomsday for the world," Vaid told here. Vaid also highlighted the capabilities of the US military, noting that B-2 bombers and bunker-buster bombs were used in the strike, tools that are exclusively available to the US. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Encontre voos low-cost Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Earlier, Vaid had expressed his support for US President Donald Trump's decision to strike the sites, writing in a post on social media, stating, "Finally Iran is denuclearised." Following the strikes, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the US, calling it a serious violation of international law, the UN Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Live Events Further, Iran's mission to the UN has demanded an urgent meeting of the Security Council following the US attacks on its nuclear facilities. The mission described the US bombing as a "blatant and illegal aggression," and demanded it be condemned in the strongest possible terms. The top Iranian diplomat accused the US, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), of "lawless and criminal behaviour" by targeting what he described as peaceful nuclear installations. In his first public remarks since carrying out 'precision' strikes in Iran, Trump warned that he could order further action if Tehran does not agree to a satisfactory peace agreement. As per a report in CNN, which cited a US official, the US used six B-2 bombers to drop a dozen "bunker buster" bombs on the Fordow nuclear site. Navy submarines fired 30 TLAM cruise missiles at two other sites, Natanz and Isfahan, and a B2 dropped two bunker busters on Natanz, the official said. US President Donald Trump has also threatened Iran with further military action if peace is not achieved in the region. He made the remarks in his first public statement since the "precision" strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities--Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan - by the US on Saturday (US local time).

‘Grossly unconstitutional': Democrats slam Donald Trump after US strikes on Iran; some call for impeachment

US President Donald Trump is facing a wave of outrage from angry Democrats, with several calling for his impeachment following his decision to bomb Iran's top nuclear facilities. Lawmakers from the left denounced the strikes as unconstitutional and a dangerous overreach of presidential power, reports the New York Post. 'The President's disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorisation is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers,' said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). 'He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.' The strikes took place on Saturday, targeting Iran's Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan nuclear facilities. Trump later confirmed that American aircraft had safely returned from the mission. 'Now is the time for peace,' he said, calling the operation a success. But the reaction from Capitol Hill was swift and fierce. Critics across the political spectrum condemned the move, with many pointing out the lack of Congressional approval. Thomas Massie, known for occasionally breaking ranks with Trump, said, 'This is not Constitutional.' Jim Himes, a top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, voiced anger over not being informed in advance. 'According to the Constitution, we are both sworn to defend, my attention to this matter comes BEFORE bombs fall. Full stop,' he posted on X. House Speaker Mike Johnson and some Republican leaders were briefed ahead of time, reports the Post. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticised the lack of transparency. 'Trump administration bears the heavy burden of explaining to the American people why this military action was undertaken,' he said, adding that 'Congress must be fully and immediately briefed in a classified setting.' Senator Bernie Sanders called the action 'grossly unconstitutional,' while Sean Casten labelled it an 'unambiguous impeachable offence.' However, not all lawmakers opposed the move. Some praised Trump's decision. 'Iran is the world's leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities,' said Senator John Fetterman. 'This was the correct move.' Republican senator Lindsey Graham said: 'Good. This was the right call. The regime deserves it. Well done." New York Representative Mike Lawler also called it the 'right decision.' 'War has not been declared, however, a Nuclear Iran has been prevented. I fully support the President's decision," Lawler said.
