Scottish town pub price slashed to less than cost of Glasgow flat

Glasgow Times14-05-2025

The Robert Hamilton, a former Wetherspoons in Airdrie, is now on the market for a fixed price of £210,000.
The pub, which though currently vacant has a 'substantial' trading area over two floors as well as an outdoor seating area, had previously been listed as 'under offer' by agents Christie and Co at an asking price of £300,000.
The price cut means the pub is on the market for less than the price of a two-bed flat in Glasgow, with such flats in the Shawlands and Dennistoun areas currently on sale for offers over £220,000.
Agents Christie and Co said that the Airdrie pub, which is in the town's centre, had potential for redevelopment for residential use subject to planning consent.
As well as the ground and first floor sales areas, which include a fully fitted commercial kitchen, the pub's second floor has staff accommodation, storage, and a plant room.
Christie and Co first listed The Robert Hamilton for sale in August 2023.
The agency said of the pub: 'This property is situated in a prime location in the city centre of Airdrie and within easy walking distance of the main train station.
'The building is currently vacant and previously traded as a public house with a food offering.
'There is scope for residential development due to its size and location, this would require planning consent.'
They added: 'The business was well known within the community and used by the locals and visitors to the town.
'The property previously traded as a successful Wetherspoons and recently under an independent owner, however, we are confident that the site has the potential to cater for many concepts going forward.
'Gross internal area of around 8217sq.ft and could therefore be developed for other use.
"The property benefits from a Premises Licence permitting the sale of alcohol until midnight Sunday to Thursday and 1.00am Friday to Saturday"

The handy gadget can be filled with up to three litres of prosecco, which equates to four standard bottles. Your drinks will be kept cool all afternoon thanks to the dispenser's ice department, with the dispenser transforming your garden into an outdoor bar. The drinks holder, which comes in a rose gold design, also features a colour changing LED, which is bound to gain the attention of fun-loving guests. If prosecco's not your thing, you can also use the dispenser for other drinks, such as wine or cocktails, and the dual pouring nozzles provide an efficient way to make sure everyone's glasses stay replenished. "Elevate any party or gathering of friends or family with this 3L drinks dispenser." Beer fans will be pleased to known that the German discounter is also launching a beer version of the dispenser. The beer tap comes in a silver colour and has just one tap, so you can fill up one pint glass at a time. The beer device can also store up to three litres of liquid, which is just over five pints. The bargain buys are priced at £22.99, and will land in stores on June 26. Cheapest supermarket revealed and Wetherspoons axe fan favourite menu item The products will be located in the Middle Aisle of your local Lidl, and are part of the supermarket's bi-weekly limited edition offerings. Middle of Lidl offers land in stores every Thursday and Sunday and are only available whilst stocks last,so you better grab yours quick. And if you're keen to elevate your garden party even further, Lidl's is launching a handy tool to help you make pizzas from today, June 12. The Grillmeister Round Pizza Stone is priced at just £7.99 and is placed on BBQs and uses heat from the coals to cook your favourite flavour. Why do Aldi and Lidl have such fast checkouts IF you've ever shopped in Aldi or Lidl then you'll probably have experienced its ultra-fast checkout staff. Aldi's speedy reputation is no mistake, in fact, the supermarket claims that its tills are 40 per cent quicker than rivals. It's all part of Aldi's plan to be as efficient as possible - and this, the budget shop claims, helps keep costs low for shoppers. Efficient barcodes on packaging means staff are able to scan items as quickly as possible, with the majority of products having multiple barcodes to speed up the process. It also uses 'shelf-ready' packaging which keeps costs low when it comes to replenishing stock. Lidl says the stone is moisture-absorbing too making for "extra crispy pizzas". The nifty piece of cooking tech, measuring 38cm across, comes with a three-year warranty. Of course, whenever buying something like this make sure you shop around to ensure you're getting the best deal. If the BBQ pizza stone doesn't take your fancy, Lidl has plenty of other middle aisle products on sale that might. The discounter is selling a £6 foldable backpack that's perfect for summer holidays abroad. The retailer's sell-out pizza oven is back in shops for £79.99 too.

You can find your nearest branch via the free-to-download app or via OTHER SPOONS NEWS Spoons is bringing back The Brunch Burger for the Father's Day weekend, from Friday to Sunday. It returned two years ago after a ten-year hiatus and was a fan favourite at the time with punters calling it "legendary". Last month, Spoons also closed a beloved pub in Coventry - The Spon Gate. Elsewhere, Spoons also launched a £2.99 breakfast deal in February, with customers able to get a breakfast muffin or small breakfast with soft or hot drink. There are also veggie options available, which are served between 8am and midday. The Sun also exclusively revealed in January Spoons had upped the price of a host of popular drinks and menu items across its pubs. The chain bumped up prices on drinks by 15p while meal deals were increased by 30p. How can I save money at Wetherspoons? PUB-GOERS love Wetherspoons for its competitive pricing and low-cost meals - but did you know there are more ways to save money? Senior consumer reporter Olivia Marshall explains how. Free refills - Buy a £1.50 tea, coffee or hot chocolate and you can get free refills. The deal is available all day, every day. Check a map - Prices can vary from one location the next, even those close to each other. So if you're planning a pint at a Spoons, it's worth popping in nearby pubs to see if you're settling in at the cheapest. Choose your day - Each night the pub chain runs certain food theme nights. For instance, every Thursday night is curry club, where diners can get a main meal and a drink for a set price cheaper than usual. Pick-up vouchers - Students can often pick up voucher books in their local near universities, which offer discounts on food and drink, so keep your eyes peeled. Get appy - The Wetherspoons app allows you to order and pay for your drink and food from your table - but you don't need to be in the pub to use it. Taking full advantage of this, cheeky customers have used social media to ask their friends and family to order them drinks. The app is free to download on the App Store or Google Play. Check the date - Every year, Spoons holds its Tax Equality Day to highlight the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill for the pub industry. It usually takes place in September, and last year it fell on Thursday, September 14. As well as its 12-day Real Ale Festival every Autumn, Wetherspoons also holds a Spring Festival.
