Anert installs Kerala's first decentralised solar-powered grid-interactive Battery Energy Storage System in Thiruvananthapuram

The Hindu04-07-2025
The Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (Anert) has installed Kerala's first decentralised solar-powered grid-interactive Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its headquarters here at PMG in the State capital.
The system can power up to loads of 100 kW and has a battery bank of 150 KWh, enabling continuous operation of one-and-a-half hours on full load in the absence of solar power or supply from the grid.
Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty inaugurated the BESS along with a demonstration project on Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology here on Friday.
The BESS consists of a prefabricated module structure with systems for power supply and distribution, monitoring and control, environmental control, fire protection, system, in addition to a dedicated Battery Management System (BMS) and Energy Management System (EMS).
Operational advantages
Anert sees many operational advantages in the BESS unit. Replacing the existing diesel generator unit, it will help to meet 24x7 requirements completely from renewables and storage. Further, it will allow the export of electricity during peak hours. It can also be used for charging electric vehicles during peak hours. 'It is designed in such a way that in case of an emergency, the system can be disconnected from the building, can be transported out to repower any other building or location,' ANERT said.
During power failures in the grid, the BESS will switch to off-grid working mode, and the load will be supplied with energy by the solar and battery. When the power grid is back to normal, the system switches back to the original working state. This allows the building to function seamlessly and ensures 24x7 power.
With focus shifting to storage systems, given the rapid increase in solar power generation in Kerala, power sector agencies including the Kerala State Electricity Board are actively pursuing BESS and pumped storage projects (PSP). A recent discussion paper on renewable energy prepared by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission had noted the usefulness of BESS units for storing excess renewable energy produced during the daytime when power demand is low and then supplying it back to the grid for peak-demand use.

IIT Madras incubated firm develops EV charging platform to link chargers with multiple networks

An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras-incubated company, Plugzmart , has developed an indigenous EV charging platform that allows a charger to connect with multiple Charging Management Systems (CMS) networks, according to officials. The first-of-its-kind "Relay", a Multi-CMS Connect platform, allows a single EV charger to connect to multiple CMS simultaneously. This means a charger is no longer restricted to a single app or network, giving it the freedom to be accessed by multiple platforms, all in real time, they said. Currently, most EV chargers are locked to one CMS, limiting customers of that specific EV Brand to utilise the charger. The platform breaks this limitation by introducing an intelligent middleware that enables multiple CMS connections for a single charger. "One of the biggest roadblocks for EV adoption is the limited availability of chargers visible on public platforms. Our solution maximises the visibility of each installed charger by allowing it to appear on multiple networks. This boosts charger utilisation, increases ROI for charger owners, and gives EV users more options - encouraging widespread EV adoption across cities and rural areas," said Raghavendar TS, Director of Software Business Unit, Plugzmart. "With this breakthrough, Plugzmart positions itself as a key enabler of open, interoperable, and future-ready EV infrastructure. The company is no longer only a CMS provider but is building the connective tissue between networks, accelerating India's shift to cleaner mobility," he said. Plugzmart is an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of Electric Vehicle Chargers and SAAS provider of Electric Charging infrastructure. Incubated at IIT Madras in 2019, Plugzmart has built its own IoT-enabled smart EV charging management system to integrate and communicate efficiently with chargers. Their portfolio of 18 products includes chargers for 2, 3 and 4-wheelers.

IIT Madras-incubated Plugzmart unveils first multi-network EV charging platform

Smart EV charger manufacturer Plugzmart, incubated at IIT Madras, has launched a first-of-its-kind EV charging platform that allows a single charger to connect to multiple Charging Management Systems (CMS) at the same 'Relay', the indigenously-developed platform offers real-time connectivity across different networks, removing the current limitation of one charger being tied to a single app or innovation enables Electric Vehicle (EV) users to access chargers through multiple service providers, improving convenience and network The Chennai-based firm has built an intelligent middleware that enables this multi-CMS connectivity without affecting reliability or innovation aims to resolve one of India's biggest EV adoption hurdles: limited charger visibility and UTILISATION AND FUTURE-READY INFRASTRUCTUREExplaining the significance of this development, Raghavendar TS, Director of Software Business Unit at Plugzmart, said, 'One of the biggest roadblocks for EV adoption is the limited availability of chargers visible on public platforms."He further said, "Our solution maximises the visibility of each installed charger by allowing it to appear on multiple networks. Relay also prevents vendor lock-in, offering CPOs the flexibility to switch or expand their CMS connections at any India's EV infrastructure expected to grow rapidly, Plugzmart's Relay aims to set new benchmarks in charging accessibility and operational benefits of this platform include:Multi-network compatibility: Enables chargers to operate across different service providers to increase reachMaximised revenue: Boosts usage and income by serving various customer groups simultaneouslyDynamic session management: Smart routing ensures seamless performance across CMS platformsVendor flexibility: Avoids lock-in by letting CPOs switch or add CMS providers as neededFast integration: Easy to deploy with existing infrastructure due to OCPP supportWith India's EV charging demand rising fast, Plugzmart's Relay platform sets the stage for a more open and efficient charging ecosystem.- Ends
