Residents of a southeast London neighbourhood say they're trying to piece together what could have led to a violent incident that left a 27-year-old man dead and two teen boys charged with second-degree murder over the weekend.
Police say they found a man with serious life-threatening injuries in the area of Breton Park Crescent and Manitoulin Drive, near Fairmont Park, at around 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, after receiving multiple 911 calls from neighbours about a group of people fighting with weapons.
"Basically, a whole bunch of police cars and noise swarmed the neighbourhood, and I didn't see it until the next morning when I went out and all the neighbours were gathered around and they had the area cordoned off," said Chris Rawlings, who has lived on Breton Park Cres. for almost 60 years.
"It's been pretty strange, not something that's happened around here, so it's a pretty rare occurrence for this street. You don't hear about [these incidents] very often."
The victim was taken to hospital, where he later died. A 15-year-old boy and 17-year-old boy, both from London, were arrested and jointly charged with second-degree murder in the case, police said. The pair cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
It's not clear how or if the parties were known to each other. CBC News went to the area on Tuesday where several neighbours said they witnessed a group of young men fighting outside a house on Manitoulin Drive, but didn't know much about the individuals involved.
"It was a fairly young group of people who lived at the house," said Rawlings. "They kept to themselves. I'd walk my dogs past them and say, 'Hi,' and there were no problems."
Sherri Hornblower lives a few doors down from Rawlings, and although she and her family weren't in town over the weekend, the mom of two young sons said she was shocked to learn that teenagers were charged in the incident.
"It's very sad and terrifying to know it happened just a few doorsteps away from us. In the nine years we've lived here, there's never been anything like that," said Hornblower.
"It's very concerning, and we're worried for [our kids'] safety, because they walk around and ride their bikes out and about, but since this happened, we are more hesitant in letting them out."
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, any suspicious activity, or has surveillance or dashcam video from the area at the time to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
"Even the smallest piece of information could be vital to this investigation," police said.
The accused were scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

‘Extraordinarily dangerous': City councillor wants south London crosswalk installed
A London city councillor wants to expedite a crosswalk near an elementary school after a driver hit a pedestrian earlier this year. A city councillor wants to expedite a crosswalk near a south London elementary school after a driver hit a pedestrian earlier this year. 'It's extraordinarily dangerous. Motorists are not slowing down. Some of them even drive through with the crossing guard present,' said Coun. Paul Van Meerbergen. 'I'll be supporting your efforts. My worry, though, and I have to put this out there is, I've got stuff I want to advance too,' added Coun. Sam Trosow. A pedestrian crosswalk with flashing lights is scheduled for installation at Viscount Road and Steeplechase Drive next year. A council committee recommended advancing the work to this fall though. City staff said an upcoming 'Safe Mobility Action Plan' will address dangerous driving in neighbourhoods citywide. 'There's more work to be done around the city, but in this case, Viscount and Steeplechase, these enhancements are totally necessary. And as soon as possible, because the driving patterns seem to be getting worse,' said Van Meerbergen.

Nearly 150 people report crimes by ex-Harrods boss to U.K. police
LONDON — At least 146 people have been in touch with U.K. police alleging crimes by former Harrods owner Mohamed Al-Fayed since authorities opened a new probe last year, the Metropolitan Police confirmed on Wednesday. 'The live investigation into those who could have facilitated or enabled Mohamed Al Fayed's offending continues,' the London police force said in a statement shared with AFP. An investigation aired by the BBC last September detailed allegations that the late Egyptian businessman, who died in 2023 aged 94, had raped and sexually assaulted several young women employed at upscale London department store Harrods. Scotland Yard is now reviewing how it handled previous investigations into Al-Fayed to identify any 'missed opportunities' and has opened a new probe into sexual assault claims, including into those who enabled the alleged offences. The police updated 146 victims who have come forwards to report alleged crimes in a briefing on Monday -- the nature of which was not clarified. 'We continue to support all victims and we urge anyone with information, whether they were directly affected by Mohamed Al Fayed's actions or aware of others who may have been involved, or committed offences to come forward,' police said in a statement. Last November, the Met said it had been approached by and had identified dozens of potential victims of sexual assault and other offences at the hands of the late billionaire following a public appeal. Harrods, which Al-Fayed owned from 1985 to 2010, announced a compensation scheme in March for women who were employed at the store or connected to it and allege that they were abused by the former boss. More than 100 alleged victims had applied for the redress scheme by July, the luxury store said.
