ROYAL Navy warships and helicopters were deployed after a Russian ship was spotted in Scottish waters.
It's believed the Russian intelligence gathering vessel was detected as it loitered in waters near the Outer Hebrides.
The Navy sent the HMS Dragon destroyer ship to monitor the suspicious vessel which appeared following the completion of major NATO exercise Formidable Shield which took place nearby.
HMS Dragon, a Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer, launched its Merlin helicopter which gathered information on Russia's Yuri Ivanov ship from above before it headed towards its home in the Arctic.
Lieutenant Commander James Bradshaw, Commanding Officer of Hunt-class minehunter HMS Hurworth said: "Monitoring activity on the seas and seabed around the UK is one of the core roles of the Royal Navy's 2nd Mine-Countermeasures Squadron.
"This operation was all in a day's work for the ship's company who have shown great professionalism.
"We have kept a constant watch to ensure the security and integrity of the UK's critical sea lanes."

‘Orwellian' football club sacked steward for sending memes
Gennaro Romano, 49, was sacked by Norwich City Football Club in October 2023 after sending mocked-up images of Diane Abbott and Nicola Sturgeon alongside comments about Russell Brand to the head of the academy. The steward, who had a 12-year unblemished record, apologised and said he forwarded the WhatsApp messages by accident, an employment tribunal was told. The championship club sacked him for breaching its disciplinary policies, a decision described as 'riddled with unfairness'. A Norwich employment tribunal heard Mr Romano had been working as a steward on matchdays since 2011 alongside his main job with Royal Mail. In September 2023, he was accused of sending 'messages of an inappropriate nature' to Neil Hunter, head of The Canaries' academy operations. The photos were of former Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon and MP Diane Abbott with captions about actor Russell Brand. 'This was at the time when the media was reporting that allegations of sexual assault were being made against Russell Brand,' the tribunal said. At a meeting with the club, he was shown a screen shot of two images received by Mr Hunter. Mr Romano claimed he had meant to send the photos to a friend who is also called Neil, but had forwarded them to his colleague by accident, the tribunal heard. The Carrow Road steward admitted the pictures were 'not nice', and apologised a number of times throughout the process, the tribunal was told. But club managers decided that he had not shown 'sufficient understanding or remorse', and sacked him. Upholding Mr Romano's claim, the tribunal said the club's decision-making process had been 'riddled with unfairness'. 'It was not one which any reasonable employer would have taken,' it added. Describing the club's actions, the tribunal said: 'If the club intends its disciplinary policy to have such an extensive, some might say Orwellian, reach, then it is incumbent on it to make that position clear.' The tribunal awarded Mr Romano £8,300. His claim of race discrimination was dismissed.

Glasgow crash involving HGV left man with bleed to brain
John Gallacher, 47, ploughed into Robert Rose, then 59, in Glasgow's Baillieston Distribution Centre on December 1 2022. Gallagher - who was behind the wheel of a Mercedes lorry - hit Mr Rose who crossed the road in front of him. Mr Rose suffered a string of injuries to his head and foot which had skin ripped off the bone from toe to heel. The stricken victim will have to use a walking stick for the rest of his life and will suffer from arthritis. Gallacher pleaded guilty today to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The court heard that Gallacher, of Cardowan, Lanarkshire, was turning into his work's depot at around 7.15am. Prosecutor Jacky Wall said: "Mr Rose crossed in front of Gallacher from left to right. "At the time, Mr Rose was wearing dark clothing but had a hi-vis vest on over his jacket. "Gallacher's struck Mr Rose with the front offside area of the vehicle which knocked him under it which caused severe injury." Mr Rose was taken to hospital where he was found to have suffered "serious injuries to his lower leg and foot." Pins were inserted into Mr Rose's foot and there has been a prognosis that he will suffer from arthritis in future. Miss Wall added: "His foot may require to be amputated." Mr Rose also sustained a fractured skull as well as a bleed to the brain.
