Pete Carroll officially introduced as Raiders new head coach
One of the biggest stories this offseason already has been the return of former Seattle Seahawks head coach to the NFL, Pete Carroll. Last week, Carroll was announced as the next head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. The 73-year-old had been out of football for a year but now he is back and ready for perhaps his greatest challenge yet.
On Monday, Carroll was officially introduced by the franchise as their next head coach. I must admit, it is a little odd to see Carroll in black and silver.

Speculation about what Carroll can and will do for the Raiders is sure to begin immediately, if it hasn't already. The biggest question of course is what will Carroll do at quarterback? Of course, one option folks seem to pointing at as a logical choice would be Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, assuming some sort of extension could not be worked out. Smith has already shared cryptic images of him with Carroll on his social media in relation to the news of his hiring.

Two former Wisconsin Badgers land on PFF's list of the NFL's top guards for 2025 A pair of former Wisconsin Badgers appeared on ProFootballFocus' recent list of the NFL's top 32 guards entering the 2025 season. Detroit Lions right guard Kevin Zeitler, a three-year Badger from 2009-11, and Buffalo Bills left guard David Edwards, who represented the Badgers from 2015-18, earned designations on the outlet's 32-man hierarchy. Zeitler, a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, landed at No. 9 on the list between Los Angeles Rams guard Kevin Dotson (No. 8) and San Francisco 49ers run-blocker Dominick Puni. The former Badger signed with the Detroit Lions ahead of the 2024 slate following his 2023 Pro Bowl campaign with the Baltimore Ravens. He's now entering his 14th professional campaign. In offensive coordinator Ben Johnson's scheme, Zeitler helped the Lions rush 534 times for 2,488 yards and 29 scores with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs starring in the backfield. Zeitler started at right guard in all 16 of his appearances. Despite being one of the older players at his position, Zeitler is about as effective as anyone not named Joe Thuney, Chris Lindstrom, or Quenton Nelson. Here's PFF's analysis: "Although Zeitler enters 2025 at age 35, he continues to prove he isn't slowing down. In his lone season in Detroit, Zeitler earned his highest PFF overall grade (86.5) in a decade, finishing as the NFL's third-highest-graded guard. While his pass protection dipped a bit in 2024, his 87.2 PFF run-blocking grade stands as the best of his career." Meanwhile, PFF ranked Edwards down at No. 29. The 2019 First-team All-Big Ten team member has played six professional seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills. Shortly after winning a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021, the lineman joined the Bills in 2023 as a backup before starting all 16 games during the 2024 campaign. With reigning MVP Josh Allen and dynamic rusher James Cook as primary ball-carriers, the Bills rushed for 2,230 yards and a league-best 32 touchdowns a season ago. Here's what PFF said about Edwards ahead of his third season in Buffalo: "2024 marked Edwards' first season in a starting role since 2021. He earned solid PFF overall grades, but really stood out as a zone blocker, recording a 78.1 PFF run-blocking grade on zone concepts — good for the 93rd percentile and the fifth-highest mark among qualifying guards." Zeitler's Lions will square off against the Packers on Sept. 7 to begin the season, while Edwards' Bills will play the Ravens the same day, beginning their quest for a second straight AFC Championship game appearance. Former Wisconsin Badger receives middling grade in PFF's 2025 NFL tight end ranking Former Wisconsin Badger and current Dallas Cowboy Jake Ferguson landed at No. 17 in ProFootballFocus' recent list of the NFL's top tight ends entering 2025. Ferguson, whose 145 career receptions rank second all-time among Badger tight ends, earned a Pro Bowl appearance in 2023. In three seasons with Dallas, Ferguson has reeled in 149 receptions for 1,429 yards and seven touchdowns. Sandwiched between New England Patriots tight end Hunter Henry (No. 16) and Green Bay Packers pass-catcher Tucker Craft (No. 18), Ferguson dropped five spots from last year's preseason ranking. The Rapid City, Wisconsin, native did miss three games in 2024, starting in all 14 of his appearances. In those 14 contests, the Wisconsin product snagged 59 receptions for 494 yards as Dallas' No. 2 passing option behind superstar CeeDee Lamb. That output followed a career-best 71-reception, 761-yard, five-touchdown performance in 2023, the year he made the Pro Bowl. While Ferguson's productivity certainly declined, he remains a staple asset in the Cowboys' offensive system. Here's PFF's take: "Ferguson looked like a tight end on the cusp of cracking the top 10 a year ago before the Cowboys' struggles and injuries caused the decline in production and grading for the third-year Wisconsin Badger. While Ferguson should enjoy a bounce-back 2025 campaign, his 56.6 PFF receiving grade and four fumbles in 2024 are worrisome for his outlook." With the Badgers, Ferguson snared a pass in every game he suited up in and set the school record for most consecutive games with a reception with 47. His 1,618 career receiving yards also land at No. 3 all-time among tight ends to play for Wisconsin. Ferguson will begin his search for a bounce-back season on Sept. 4 when the Cowboys open their season against the Philadelphia Eagles. Milestone Papalii double lifts Raiders over Souths
Josh Papalii scored a fairytale double as he became the most-capped player in Canberra history and lifted the Raiders to a gritty come-from-behind win over South Sydney. Chants of "Papa" rang through GIO Stadium after the Raiders legend's two late tries, before Papalii converted his second himself to put the icing on a 36-12 victory and send the Raiders to the top of the NRL ladder on Sunday. Despite the veteran's late show, it was young five-eighth Ethan Strange who was responsible for turning the day around for the home side, after two early Rabbitohs tries for Keaon Koloamatangi and Alex Johnston threatened to rain on Big Papa's parade. Strange was unstoppable in wet and near-freezing conditions that made handling a tricky task. Just before halftime, the 20-year-old showed why he is one of the best running halves in the league by pushing past four Souths defenders to muscle his way to the tryline and lift the Raiders back into the game. Strange replicated his effort after the break, jinking past more flat-footed defenders to put the Raiders back level. Soon after, Johnston failed to defuse a Jamal Fogarty bomb and back-rower Zac Hosking cleaned up the scraps to send Canberra ahead. The Raiders grew in confidence and doubled their lead through Simi Sasagi before Papalii, who was given a rare start by coach Ricky Stuart in his 319th game, came on for his second stint. In the 70th minute, the strong crowd of 19,438 that braved the miserable conditions were sent into raptures when hooker Owen Pattie sent Papalii over with a short range pass. Three minutes later the veteran went over after another Pattie pass and stepped up to land the conversion. The Raiders went top with the result, though Canterbury could usurp them when they face Parramatta on Monday. Other than a brief moment in round 2 of 2024, it's the first time Canberra have topped the ladder since round 6 in 2005.
