Spain's grid operator disputes miscalculation in blackout report

MADRID - Spanish grid operator Redeia disputed the findings of a government report that said failure by the operator to calculate the correct mix of energy was one of the factors that led to a massive blackout in Spain and Portugal on April 28.
Redeia operations chief Concha Sanchez also told a news briefing on Wednesday its own investigation had discovered anomalies in the disconnection of power plants on April 28 even though voltage in the system was within legal limits, as well as an anomalous growth in demand from the transport network.
Then, in the first seconds of the blackout, a combined-cycle plant that was supposed to provide stability to the system disconnected when it should not have, she said.
"Based on our calculation, there was enough voltage control capabilities planned" by Redeia, she said. "Had conventional power plants done their job in controlling the voltage there would have been no blackout."
The government's report released on Tuesday said Redeia's miscalculation was one of the factors hindering the grid's ability to cope with a surge in voltage that led to the outage.
According to Redeia's Sanchez, the system was in "absolutely normal conditions" at noon just before the blackout.
Redeia will release its own full report on the causes of the outage, its chair, Beatriz Corredor, told the same news briefing. REUTERS

The 56-metre-long (184-foot) Bayesian was moored off the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, in August last year when it sank during a severe and sudden weather event, killing seven people, including Lynch and his teenage daughter Hannah. The recovery process has been made easier after the vessel's 72-metre mast was detached using a remote-controlled cutting tool and placed on the seabed on Tuesday. Eight steel lifting straps will be attached before a powerful floating marine crane lifts the Bayesian the 50 metres to the surface. "Over the coming days, all going well, the vessel's final recovery will take place this weekend," said Marcus Cave, head of Naval Architecture at TMC Marine. It is expected to be transported to the nearby port of Termini Imerese on Monday and handed over to the authorities who are investigating the tragedy. The yacht was vulnerable to violent winds and was probably knocked over by gusts of more than 117 km (73 miles) per hour, an interim UK report said last month. Lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and chef Recaldo Thomas were also killed when the yacht sank. Nine other crew members and six guests were rescued. Former NFL executive Brian Rolapp appointed PGA Tour CEO
– Former National Football League (NFL) executive vice-president Brian Rolapp said he is 'ready to get to work' after being named the CEO of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Enterprises on June 17. The 53-year-old spent 22 years with the NFL. He will take over the day-to-day operations of the PGA Tour later this summer in place of current commissioner Jay Monahan, who will step down at the end of his contract in 2026. Per the PGA Tour, Monahan will focus on his role as a member of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Enterprises boards during the remainder of his tenure. The 55-year-old took over as commissioner in 2017. 'A year ago, I informed our boards that upon completing a decade as commissioner, I would step down from my role at the end of 2026,' he said in a statement. 'Since then, we've worked together to identify a leader who can build on our momentum and develop a process that ensures a smooth transition. We've found exactly the right leader in Brian Rolapp, and I'm excited to support him as he transitions from the NFL into his new role leading the PGA Tour.' The search committee for the new CEO included Monahan, Tiger Woods, Adam Scott – both player directors on the policy board – and Arthur Blank, owner of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and chair of PGA Tour Enterprises' management, development and compensation committee. Rolapp stands as a natural fit, having been the NFL's lead media and business officer during a period of exponential growth by the league. He is considered a potential successor for commissioner Roger Goodell, and a new role as a CEO at a different pro sports endeavour likely will not change that. Rolapp joined the NFL in 2003 and had been in his most recent role overseeing advertising, sponsorships and media contracts since 2017. Before then, he was the NFL chief operating officer and senior vice-president of media strategy and digital media. He also was the CEO of NFL Network and executive vice-president of NFL Media. 'I'm honoured to join the PGA Tour at such a pivotal time,' he said in a statement. The $546 billion asset manager, which counts Atletico Madrid among its sports investments, now shares an ownership table with Mbappe's Coalition Capital in the high-speed sailing franchise, creating a curious alliance between the Spanish capital's two soccer teams.
