Gurugram celebrated the 79th Independence Day on Friday with a vibrant display of patriotism, unity, and cultural pride. In his address, Rana saluted the bravery of India's armed forces, recalling Operation Sindoor — a decisive military strike that destroyed nine terrorist bases inside Pakistan — and Operation Mahadev, in which perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack were neutralised. 'These operations are proof that India will no longer remain silent in the face of terrorism. Every citizen must stand united to protect the nation's honour, security, and integrity,' said Rana. Rana also envisioned Gurugram as a future hub for both economic activity and eco-tourism, announcing projects such as the country's largest jungle safari in the Aravalis, a Central Park-inspired 'Anand Van', an international conference centre, a grand aquarium, and a world-class Disneyland-style attraction. The minister paid tribute at the Shaheed Smarak in the zila parishad hall complex, honouring freedom fighters and their families. Over 3,000 schoolchildren participated in the celebrations, with performances including yoga demonstrations, Krishna Leela, Rajasthani folk dances, and Haryana's vibrant cultural showcases. The parade, led by assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Abhilaksh Joshi, drew applause for its discipline and grandeur, with participating schools awarded ₹3 lakh in recognition of their efforts. Patriotism across communities Many housing societies across Gurugram marked Independence Day by honouring war veterans and retired army officers. Beyond the official ceremony, Gurugram's neighbourhoods came alive with community-driven Independence Day events. Amit Jindal, RWA president of Vipul Greens, Sector 48, said, 'We celebrated the day with senior citizens and children, organising competitions, patriotic songs, and dances. It was heartwarming to see three generations come together to honour our country.' In Sector 50, Fresco Apartment RWA president Nilesh Tandon remarked, 'Our celebrations brought together residents from all walks of life. The flag hoisting was the proudest moment, and the cultural performances by our children truly reflected our unity in diversity.' Central Park residents gathered for an early-morning flag hoisting followed by songs, dances, and cultural skits. 'Independence Day here is a community tradition here,' said a resident. 'We celebrate like one big family.' At Iris Broadway, executive director Aman Trehan said, 'Every festival here is celebrated with enthusiasm. This Independence Day, we honoured 79 years of freedom while promoting wellness and community bonding. The turnout was incredible, and the spirit unmatched.' Ambience Mall marked the occasion with 'Humare Rakshak,' an installation paying tribute to India's armed forces. Featuring scale models of the S-400 missile launcher, Akash, BrahMos, and Pichora missiles, as well as fighter jets like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Rafale, MiG, and Mirage 2000, the display was crafted from upcycled materials. Arjun Gehlot, director of Ambience group, said, 'True patriotism is purposeful action. This installation honours the resilience and service of our defence forces while promoting sustainability.'

Tourism, Welfare In Focus In Rekha's I-Day Address

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta used her maiden Independence Day address at Chhatrasal Stadium to unveil initiatives spanning worker welfare, women's empowerment, environmental renewal and tourism development. Gupta also announced an ambitious tourism blueprint for Delhi, which included a 12-km Chhath Ghat along the Yamuna, a regular Yamuna Aarti, a heritage tourism circuit, and a river cruise service. On the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Delhi govt will launch the Atal Canteen scheme to provide hygienic, nutritious meals to workers for just Rs 5, she said. "Delhi govt will stand beside every worker, ensuring jobs, education for their children, and basic family needs," Gupta added. She described herself as Delhi's "mukhya sevika" and vowed that her govt would rid the capital of garbage, corruption and bureaucratic hurdles. She later met and congratulated the marching contingents who had also waited in the heavy downpour. For women in labor-intensive jobs, including taxi drivers, 500 centres and crèches will be set up, she said. Govt has already upgraded 300 Anganwadi centres with modern facilities and improved safety standards. "These measures will transform the lives of the poor and working classes and ensure no one is left behind in Delhi's progress," the CM said. In a strong pitch for environmental reform, Gupta declared that Delhi's future "will not be defined by its problems but by the bold solutions we implement today." The initiatives included the elimination of landfill mountains, expansion of solar power adoption, and citizen-driven action. Marking a push for tourism, Gupta said a heritage circuit would be set up, linking forts, monuments, museums and cultural centres, offering visitors a seamless experience of the city's history. Gupta framed these plans as part of a broader mission to make Delhi a "viksit", or developed, capital. "With small but strong steps, we will create an independent, developed Delhi, one that the world will admire and that will stand as a proud symbol of our nation's potential," she said. She paid tribute to the nation's freedom fighters and hailed the armed forces for the success of Operation Sindoor. Veteran freedom fighter and a member of the Indian National Army (INA), Rangaswamy Madhavan Pillai, was felicitated. Pillai joined the freedom struggle at the age of 17 under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's leadership. "I don't just promise but pledge to rejuvenate the Yamuna. Several promises were made in the past to clean the Yamuna, but little was achieved," she said. At the Delhi party office, BJP's Delhi chief Virendra Sachdeva hoisted the national flag and paid tribute to the martyrs of Pahalgam, and congratulated the Army on Operation Sindoor. He said after a decade of anarchic governance, this Independence Day was one of joy for Delhiites. He pledged to work with govt to reshape the capital. At the Legislative Assembly, Speaker Vijender Gupta led the celebrations. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). CJI: Building an equal India far from complete, but Murmu appointment step towards inclusivity

CJI BR Gavai (File photo/PTI) NEW DELHI: Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai, only the second from the Dalit community to head the judiciary, on Friday said the journey for building a just, equal and inclusive India is not yet complete though appointment of Droupadi Murmu , daughter of a poor tribal family, as President, illustrates the distance the country has covered towards achieving the goal. In his Independence Day speech in Supreme Court, the CJI said, "It is the destiny of India that the Santhal community, which was among the first to rise against the British in 1855, now has its daughter, President Droupadi Murmu, holding the highest constitutional office in the land." "Her journey from a small village in Odisha to Rashtrapati Bhavan is a testament to how far we have travelled. And yet, we must remember that the work of building a just, equal, and inclusive India is far from complete," he said after hoisting the tricolour at SC. He said judges of the constitutional courts have the responsibility to promote, protect, imbibe, and defend the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. He reiterated the judges of constitutional courts, HCs and SC, are co-equals and must bear the responsibility of giving "a broader, more purposive interpretation to the values of the Constitution". Only when the rights of the marginalised are protected will Mahatma Gandhi's Swaraj be real and Ambedkar's idea of democracy be complete, the CJI said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Hours after PM mentioned the contributions of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, CJI Gavai said, "From the hills of today's Jharkhand, where the Santhals lit the first flames of rebellion, to the forests of Chota Nagpur where Birsa Munda dreamed of dignity, from the humble school in Pune where Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule opened the doors of learning to the excluded, to the renunciation of a knighthood by Tagore in protest against injustice, from crafting of our Constitution by Babasaheb Ambedkar, to the moral compass of Mahatma Gandhi, our freedom was forged not in one place, nor by one people, but by courage of many, united by one dream of equal India.
