Inquiry into Mkhwanazi allegations to start hearing evidence on September 1
The commission of inquiry into allegations of corruption in the criminal justice system is due to begin its hearings on September 1. This was announced by commission chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga, a recently retired Constitutional Court judge. President Cyril Ramaphosa established the commission to look into allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused police minister Senzo Mchunu of interfering with police investigations and overstepping his role when he ordered the disbandment of the police political killings task team. In July Madlanga said of the inquiry's mandate: 'The entities and persons, people we must investigate are the SAPS, metro police of the three metros in Gauteng, the National Prosecuting Authority, the State Security Agency, the judiciary, correctional services and any institution in the criminal justice system. 'These entities and people are to be investigated in relation to infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates.' Madlanga said after three months the commission wanted to be in a position to submit an interim report to the president and make recommendations regarding action that needs needed to be taken. It is expected that the first hearing will be held in public in Pretoria at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College. The venue has been made available to the commission free of charge. TimesLIVE

Two youths arrested over attempted robbery of MPs in Cape Town
DA parliamentary chief whip George Michalakis named the MPs as Ian Cameron, Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell. They were returning from an oversight visit to the police training college in Philippi when they were accosted. "Gotsell was hospitalised, but is not in a critical condition, and Cameron sustained minor injuries. Cameron was able to act quickly and in self-defence to prevent further injury to any of them. All three MPs are safe." Cameron posted on X: "Nick is receiving treatment, Lisa has a minor head injury, and I sustained some injuries, including a few stitches and dental damage, but nothing life-threatening. This was a serious and deliberate attack, and it underscores the risks faced during oversight work. But incidents like this will not deter us. "We remain determined to carry out our responsibility to ensure accountability and safety. We also appreciate the support of colleagues and community members who have stood with us. Tonight I was able to sit down with my family for dinner, and for that we are eternally grateful. Dankie Jesus." Michalakis reiterated the DA's call for policing in areas such as Philippi to receive priority attention in allocation of resources from national government. "The incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime South Africans face on a daily basis and no-one is exempt from it." "We trust law enforcement will bring the perpetrators to account, but we again call on the minister of police to urgently ensure sufficient resources are allocated to areas riddled with criminal activities to prevent such incidents and future loss of life," said Michalakis. DA slams education minister Buti Manamela over Seta appointments
Manamela said his decision marks the first step in stabilising the governance failures in the entities, which include procurement irregularities, lapses in oversight and board instability which have threatened their ability to deliver on their mandate to advance skills development. 'We cannot allow governance failures to erode the public's confidence in our skills development system. The administrators have a clear mandate to restore integrity, enforce consequence management where necessary and ensure learners and workers are not prejudiced by institutional weaknesses. Our goal is to reposition Setas so they can contribute effectively to the fight against unemployment, poverty and inequality,' he said. The DA believes the appointees are unfit. According to party spokesperson and DA MP Karabo Khakhau, the cohort has allegedly "been previously implicated in corruption, mismanagement and fraud in previous government jobs or have proved themselves useless in the Seta space". The names were gazetted on Tuesday after years of corruption, mismanagement and serious rot reflected in the auditor-general's reports uncovering irregularities. 'Will minister Manamela fail his first test of ANC cadre deployment, or will he go down the same path as Nobuhle Nkabane [who was fired as higher education and training minister by President Cyril Ramaphosa]? Minister Manamela announced the appointments, saying they are to address serious and entrenched governance failures in the entities. How can this be addressed by corruption, fraud and mismanagement implicated ANC cadres?'
