MPI secures over RM1.2mil for 2024 Journalism Awards and gala
Of the total RM1,249,500 raised, RM450,000 was contributed by Petronas specifically for the HKM 2024 award winners, making the company the event's main sponsor.
Meanwhile, for the organisation of MWM 2025, MPI is working in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
A total of RM799,500 was received from 51 sponsors, comprising corporate bodies, ministries, government agencies, and media organisations.
The funds will be fully utilised to ensure that MWM 2025 — to be held alongside the awards ceremony on June 20 at The Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur — is delivered to the highest standards.
Speaking at an appreciation ceremony held today, MPI president Datuk Yoo Soo Heong also unveiled MPI's first-ever coffee table book — a commemorative publication celebrating the legacy and generosity of key sponsors.
"More than a keepsake, this publication stands as a tribute to those who champion responsible journalism, transparency, and the pursuit of truth," he said.
Yoo added that the initiative also aimed at supporting retrenched journalists, many of whom contributed their expertise to the book.
"Many talented professionals — once the backbone of respected newsrooms — have lent their insights to this project. Their voices will now be immortalised, continuing to shape narratives and inform public discourse," he said.
During the event, sponsors symbolically presented mock cheques to MPI in recognition of their support.
This year's HKM 2024 received 548 submissions from media professionals across 21 award categories — an increase of 60 entries compared to the previous year.
The Best Photo Journalism category attracted the most entries (79), followed by Best News Video (65) and Best Video Podcast (46).
MPI also held its second Townhall session — an interactive platform for sponsors and contributors to exchange views and gain insights from a panel of media professionals. The session was themed "Opportunities and Space in Media Coverage."
The initiative is aimed at strengthening understanding between the media and industry stakeholders, particularly in crafting effective corporate messaging and strategic communication.
Panellists included Yoo, MPI board director and Sinar Harian editor-in-chief Zambri Rambli, and Bernama's Head of Commercial, Datuk Mastura Hassan. The session was moderated by MPI deputy president and Media Prima Berhad's Deputy Group Managing Editor for News and Current Affairs, as well as New Straits Times Group Editor, Farrah Naz Karim.

Astaka ropes in Singapore's CapitaLand for RM1.2bil Johor development
KUALA LUMPUR: Astaka Holdings Ltd has announced plans for a RM1.2 billion mixed-use development in Johor Bharu, which will feature a lifestyle retail mall next to its upcoming residential tower, Arden @ One Bukit Senyum. To craft the project's retail strategy, Astaka has partnered with CapitaLand Investment Ltd (CLI), a global real asset manager with more than 70 malls across Singapore, Malaysia and China. The partnership was formalised on Aug 19 through a retail advisory service agreement witnessed by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. Under the agreement, CLI will advise Astaka on asset planning as well as pre- and post-opening operations. At the same event, Onn Hafiz and Astaka executives unveiled the master plan for Phase 3 of the One Bukit Senyum integrated project. Phase 3, which includes the new mixed-use development and the Arden tower, has a combined gross development value (GDV) of RM2.1 billion. Altogether, Phases 1 to 3 are expected to reach a total GDV of RM3.6 billion. Astaka said the advisory deal is not expected to materially impact its net tangible assets or earnings per share during the project's duration. Executive director and CEO Allen Khong said Astaka has led transformative developments in Johor Bahru for over a decade through its flagship One Bukit Senyum project. "Over the past decade, Astaka has been at the forefront of many transformative real estate projects in Johor Bahru, particularly through our flagship development, One Bukit Senyum. We have long held a vision for a new central business district in Johor Bahru that will be a world-class residential, commercial, retail and leisure destination. "With the development of the third and final phase of One Bukit Senyum, we will fully realise this vision and play a key role in the transformation of Johor Bahru into a vibrant, prosperous city. As we enter the final stage of this decade-long project, One Bukit Senyum is in the right place at the right time." Khong said the establishment of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) will unlock not just stronger trade and industrial growth, but also increased tourism, cross-border travel and retail activity. "We expect One Bukit Senyum to be a key beneficiary of these trends, thanks to our strategic location bordering Singapore and close proximity to the upcoming RTS Link," he said. Khong said the partnership with CLI, which manages over 70 malls in China, Malaysia and Singapore, further positions the group for success. He said that leveraging CLI's vast expertise in managing high-traffic shopping destinations will enable Astaka to fully unlock the potential of its lifestyle mall – contributing tremendously to the growth and value of One Bukit Senyum. The retail development in Johor Bahru is well-positioned to benefit from the development of JS-SEZ, according to Ervin Yeo, CEO of CLI's commercial management department. "Drawing on our deep retail expertise and strong track record in curating successful retail and lifestyle destinations in many cities, we look forward to supporting Astaka in creating a vibrant retail experience at One Bukit Senyum that appeals to both local Johoreans and shoppers from elsewhere in Malaysia and abroad," he said. Onn Hafiz said this partnership between Astaka and CLI, two prominent companies from Johor and Singapore, aligns with the Johor state government's efforts to drive increased cross-border business collaboration.

Govt has no plans for single REE entity to regulate industry
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has no plans to establish a single entity akin to Petronas to regulate the rare earth elements (REE) industry for now, says Datuk Seri Johari Ghani. The acting natural resources and environmental sustainability minister said that during past discussions and stakeholder engagements, several states expressed objections to such a move. "They viewed the proposal as an attempt at the nationalisation of mineral resources that belong to the states. "As is well known, the management of petroleum resources beyond state waters is different from the management of land matters, which falls under state jurisdiction. "This is clearly stated in the Federal Constitution, Ninth Schedule, List II (State List), which provides that the states have jurisdiction over permits and licences for prospecting, mining leases, mining, and mining certificates," he said in his winding-up speech for the 13th Malaysia Plan. This comes after proposals by several members of parliament for the government to establish a regulatory agency, similar to Petronas, through the enactment of an REE Act to drive the development of the REE industry. Johari assured that the Federal Government fully respects state jurisdiction over land and mineral matters, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution. Accordingly, he said the government has formulated a clear long-term plan to develop the rare earth elements industry holistically, in line with the direction endorsed by the National Economic Action Council. "Any policies or mechanisms on REE revenue distribution will be formulated and decided inclusively through the National Mineral Council, which serves as the main platform for engagement and coordination between the federal and producing state governments. "This planning is based on the principle of close cooperation between the federal and state governments, to ensure that every initiative for the development of the REE industry takes into account state rights and jurisdiction as provided under the Constitution," he said. Malaysia, he said, is also still in discussions with China on technology transfer of REE to Malaysia. "We want to first see what they are doing. We will also conduct our own research, and only then sit down to decide what technologies we want to adopt. "We cannot depend solely on China, as Russia also has expertise, although they have not approached us. China, on the other hand, has offered, and they want to prove themselves to us. We will assess the outcomes and then discuss further," he said. When asked why the proof-of-concept phase in Kenering, Perak is taking up to five years, Johari clarified that big-scale mining usually takes more time to assess, especially on its impact towards the environment. He said he would visit the site soon to get updates from the scientists. He also clarified that Malaysia has never offered the export of raw REE as a concession or condition for tariff reduction in trade tariff negotiations with the United States. This also comes after several queries from MPs to the government about negotiations with the United States involving REE, given that the raw export ban is still in force. "NRES wishes to stress that, in trade tariff negotiations with the US government, Malaysia has never offered the export of raw REE as a concession or condition for tariff reduction.
