Midlothian family-run cafe announces 'difficult' closure amid rising costs

Yahoo12-04-2025

The owners of a Midlothian cafe have announced its closure amid rising costs and thanked locals for their support.
Callum Anderson opened up Ian's Wee Cafe back in 2023, in honour of his late father who instilled his passion for cooking. He's now made the tough decision to close, with the cost of national insurance and utilities going up.
Despite the news, they're "very proud of what they've built."

Posting to Facebook, owners said: "We're closing our doors, but not our hearts.
"With a heavy heart, we announce that Saturday, April 26, will be our last day of trade as Ian's Wee Cafe at 5 Meadow Place, Bilston. Regrettably, a combination of factors, including the significant impact of the Labour UK Government's policies on small businesses, has made it impossible for us to continue.
"The Minimum Wage Increase, Employer's National Insurance (NI) Contribution Increase, and Utilities Price Increase have put us in an extremely difficult position, alongside ongoing challenges within our business location. Despite all this, we are incredibly proud of what we've built here.

"Ian's Wee Cafe has been more than just a place to grab a bite; it has been a hub for the community, a space for local groups and organisations to come together, and a cornerstone for many of you who became part of our extended family. For that, we will forever be grateful."
Callum Anderson opened up the cafe in honour of Calum's late father, Ian, who passed away in 2006. Speaking to Edinburgh Live back in 2023, Calum said: "Before he passed away, his sort of mobility was limited.
"I was taught to cook by him, either being in his chair or through the bedroom, just shooting sort of order through to the bedroom and how to cook things sort of step by step. Since then sort of my passion has just become stronger."

"With dad it took a bit of a downward spiral, but he's always sort of been unwell for sort of, most of my life."
Locals were left gutted by the news of the closure. One said: "So sorry to hear this! You always made us feel so welcome."
Another added: "Sorry to hear you are closing. It's so hard for small independent businesses nowadays. Good luck with whatever you choose to do in the future."
A third posted: "So sorry to hear this! Wishing you guys all the best with your next chapter."

Winter fuel payment scammers already 'targeting pensioners'

Scammers are already targeting pensioners who are hoping to get their winter fuel payments restored, Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has warned. It comes a day after it was confirmed the payments, which the government stopped for millions of pensioners across the UK, have now been reinstated. Lyons told the Northern Ireland Assembly he is aware of a number of "scams in circulation", in which pensioners are being contacted and asked for their banking details. He said it is "disgraceful" that people are "trying to take advantage of pensioners" less than 24 hours after the payments were restored. The minister reminded those who are in line for the payments that the money will be paid out automatically, and there is no need to provide details or fill out application forms. He also reassured assembly members that pensioners in Northern Ireland will receive their payments at the same time as others across the UK. Detailing how the scheme will work, he said legislation will be passed by the end of July that will clear the way for payments to be made before the winter. He stressed there will be no additional cost for the Northern Ireland Executive as the money will be provided from London. He said only those pensioners who earn £35,000 or less will be eligible. On Monday, payments of up to £300 per household for those over 80 and £200 for those under 80 were confirmed for Northern Ireland. In England and Wales, payments will be made to all pensioners before HMRC will recover money from those earning over £35,000 through taxation. Winter Fuel Payments were created in 1997 to help everyone above state pension age with their winter heating bills. The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, announced last year that winter 2024 would be the first time pensioners in England and Wales would not be eligible for the payment. Northern Ireland was forced to follow suit. Payments were then restricted to those on benefits and pension credit. Concerns over £72 million shortfall's impact on council services

A local Senedd Member has raised concerns about a £72 million funding shortfall's effect on council services. Peter Fox has written to Monmouthshire Council's leader regarding the impact of the shortfall in employer National Insurance (NI) funding. The shortfall comes following the UK Government decision to increase NI contributions without providing full funding to local authorities, leaving public sector bodies to pay more to employ staff. Mark Drakeford, Labour's finance secretary, assured in November that additional funding would cover these increased costs. This week, he revealed the UK government would not provide full funding, leaving a £72 million shortfall across Welsh public services. Mr Fox said: "Mark Drakeford assured us that these tax increases would not fall on the public sector, so last week's news was bitterly disappointing. "Local authorities will now face a difficult choice: either cut vital services or raise council tax to cover the extra costs."

Terra Metals Inc. and Lunda Resources Confirm 96.5% Copper Recovery and Solar-Powered Green Production at Kalaba Project

CHARLOTTE, N.C. and LUSAKA, Zambia, June 09, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Terra Metals Inc., in partnership with its Zambian subsidiary Lunda Resources Ltd., is proud to announce a major metallurgical breakthrough at the Kalaba Copper Project in Northwestern Zambia. Independent testing conducted by Dr. Yotamu Hara of YCS Sustainable Solutions Ltd. confirms flotation recoveries exceeding 96.5%, with concentrate grades of 26.91% Cu—a remarkable result for oxide-dominant ore. Technical Highlights: 96.52% cumulative copper recovery using flotation (see p. 30 of Hara Report), with sulphide concentrates at 26.91% Cu and oxide concentrates at 4.31% Cu. Flotation made possible through advanced chemistry, particularly the use of CMC depressants to manage high talc content (up to 54%), previously considered a major processing barrier. The ore's upgrade potential allows for low-cost leaching via solvent extraction, positioning Kalaba among Africa's lowest-cost green copper producers. An NI 43-101-compliant resource estimate is expected to be released before the end of July 2025. A Model for Green Critical Minerals: Full environmental clearance has been granted by ZEMA (Zambia Environmental Management Agency). A 5 MW solar energy facility has been completed and approved, with plans to expand to 100 MW—enabling carbon-neutral production of copper and cobalt. Terra Metals and its partners will become Zambia's first large-scale producers of green critical metals, powered almost entirely by solar energy. Traditional & Community Support: Terra Metals acknowledges the tremendous support of His Royal Highness Senior Chief Sailunga and Chief Ntambu of the Lunda people. Their leadership and collaboration have played a vital role in advancing the Kalaba Project with integrity and respect for local communities. Regional Upside: In addition to Kalaba, the company holds a large-scale exploration license through Central Africa Renewable Energy, covering a prospective copper-cobalt zone immediately south of Ivanhoe's world-class Kamoa-Kakula Mine in the DRC Copperbelt. Chairman's Statement: 'This isn't just a technical success—it's a declaration that Zambia can lead in responsible, solar-powered production of the world's most critical minerals. Kalaba is proof that innovation, sustainability, and community partnership can deliver real value.'— Mumena Mushinge, Chairman, Terra Metals Inc. and Lunda Resources. Next Milestones: NI 43-101 Report expected before July 31, 2025 240TPH concentrator commissioning in September 2025 Solar expansion to 100 MW Phase 2 exploration and geophysics at DRC-bordering tenement ⸻ ABOUT TERRA METALS INC.
