‘Don't need our nod to file contempt plea': SC to petitioner on Nishikant Dubey's remarks
The Supreme Court on Monday told a petitioner that he does not need its permission to file a contempt plea against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey over his criticism of the apex court and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna.
According to a PTI report, the matter was mentioned before a bench comprising justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih.
The petitioner's counsel referred to a recent news report about Dubey's comments and said he wanted to file a contempt petition with the court's permission.
"You file it. For filing, you don't require our permission," Justice Gavai was quoted by PTI as saying.

The bench said the petitioner needs to get a sanction from the attorney general in the matter.
In his letter to attorney general R Venkatramani, advocate Anas Tanveer termed Dubey's remarks "deeply derogatory and dangerously provocative".
"I am writing this letter under Section 15(1)(b) of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, read with Rule 3(c) of the Rules to Regulate Proceedings for Contempt of the Supreme Court, 1975, to humbly seek your kind consent for initiating criminal contempt proceedings against Shri Nishikant Dubey, Hon'ble Member of Lok Sabha from Godda parliamentary constituency in Jharkhand, for statements made by him in public that are grossly scandalous, misleading, and aimed at lowering the dignity and authority of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India," the letter said.

Nishikant Dubey, a BJP MP from Jharkhand's Godda, stoked a massive row after he held CJI Sanjiv Khanna responsible for the "civil wars" happening in the country.
"Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, is responsible for all the civil wars happening in this country," Dubey told ANI.
"Article 368 says that Parliament has the right to make all laws and the Supreme Court has the right to interpret the law. The top court is asking the President and Governor to tell what they have to go regarding the Bills. When Ram Mandir or Krishna Janamboomi or Gyanvapi comes, you (SC) says 'Show us the paper'. Mughals ke aane ke baad jo Masjid banne hai unke liye keh raho ho paper kaha se dikhao," he added.
The BJP on Saturday distanced itself from Dubey's criticism of the Supreme Court, with party president J P Nadda calling the comments his personal views.
He also affirmed the ruling party's respect for the judiciary as an inseparable part of democracy.
Nadda said he had directed party leaders not to make such comments.

Supriya Sule rules out alliance with Ajit Pawar or BJP in upcoming municipal elections
Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Supriya Sule has ruled out any alliance with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP or Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming municipal elections. Sule is on a tour of Pune district during which she visited newly-appointed municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram to discuss various issues related to her Lok Sabha (LS) constituency, Baramati. Sule told media persons: 'In a democracy, there should be dialogue. We should meet all party leaders and this is Maharashtra's tradition. But in the coming elections, we will never go with the BJP.' Recently, state president of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, Sunil Tatkare, had said, 'We have entered an alliance with the BJP and we will remain with them. If someone wants to join us, they should accept this principle.' Whereas the city president of the NCP (SP), Prashant Jagtap, said, 'Supriya Sule has made it clear that there will be no alliance with the BJP or Ajit Pawar-led party. We are prepared to contest the municipal elections and ready to face them.' For the last few weeks, there have been rumours about the likelihood of both NCP factions coming together. Recently however, both parties celebrated 'Foundation Day' in Pune, sending out a clear message that there will be no merger of the two factions. It is now clear that the two NCP factions will contest the upcoming civic elections separately and against each other.

TV anchor not liable for panellist's statement: Supreme Court
Supreme Court (Photo: ANI) NEW DELHI: Putting a premium on the right to free speech and expression, Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of Sakshi TV anchor K Srinivasa Rao, who was held by Andhra police for abetting alleged derogatory and defamatory statements by a panelist on his live show on Amaravati. Justices Mishra and Manmohan said, "Rao has not made the statement. His journalistic participation in a live TV show deserves to be protected, so as that of his fundamental right to free speech. Rao shall be released on bail on conditions to be imposed by the trial court." Guest called Amaravati 'capital of sex workers' On June 6, political analyst V V R Krishnamraju had appeared as a panelist on a show anchored by Rao on Sakshi TV, considered a mouthpiece of opposition YSR Congress Party which while in govt had abrogated previous TDP dispensation's Amaravati capital project, and referred to the capital as 'capital of sex workers". Appearing for the 70-year-old Rao, senior advocate Siddharth Dave told a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan that he was only hosting the TV show and that the statement is not attributed to him but to a panellist over whom he had no control. Opposing the plea challenging the arrest, senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Sidharth Luthra said that when the offending and derogatory statement was made against women of Andhra Pradesh, the TV anchor, instead of stopping the panellist, was seen encouragingly laughing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo The bench sought the AP government's response to his petition seeking the quashing of the FIR against him. AAP govt turns commission agent: Jakhar on land acquisition
Ludhiana: Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar accused the AAP government of conspiring to usurp 25,000 acres of land in Ludhiana and said that the state government was playing the role of commission agent for big real estate houses. He also said that both chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Kejriwal were acting as land aggregators. The AAP government is colluding with real estate dealers to illegally usurp prime agricultural land of Ludhiana by cheating farmers, Jakhar said, adding that BJP would not allow such nefarious designs to succeed. "On June 19, residents of Ludhiana will cast their vote against the move to illegally acquire their land. They will weed out AAP's corruption," Jakhar said while addressing a press conference with Union minister Ravneet Bittu and BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta. Alleging corruption in the last three and a half years of AAP government, Jakhar demanded a high court-monitored probe to ascertain if the money being collected from drug trade and other illegal activities was leading to politicians of any party. He said that the probe could include Punjab Vigilance, IT, ED and other agencies to ensure impartiality. Jakhar said that if tracking ill-gotten money through IT returns filed before the Election Commission were that simple, how would a former MP have Rs 200 crore in his house. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! Hinting at large-scale corruption, he said that those running mobile repair shops before elections were now constructing mansions in posh areas. Replying to a media query, Jakhar said that by not acting against corrupt Congress leaders, the AAP government had betrayed people of Punjab. Earlier, Jakhar expressed grief over the tragic Air India plane crash which claimed the lives of 241 passengers, including the crew. He expressed sympathies with the bereaved and paid tributes to two-time former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who was one of the victims.
