There are so many reasons to be excited about the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The new Marvel movie will finally introduce one of the company's original superhero teams to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the thing that has me most excited is just how and when the Fantastic Four will start their adventure.
The upcoming Marvel movie won't start the story in the same universe that has been the focus of the rest of the MCU. Instead, they'll exist in a retro-future version of the 1960s. Back when CinemaBlend got to visit the set of Fantastic Four: First Steps producer Grant Curtis explained that part of this decision came from a desire to honor the creation of the characters by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Curtis explained…
First of all, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Sixties, most everyone knows the importance of Fantastic Four to Marvel, in general. In the late Fifties and early Sixties, Marvel went out of business, or were on the verge of bankruptcy. Stan and Jack decided to throw a Hail Mary, and came up with the coolest concept they could think of at that time – a family that would go on to become The Fantastic Four. … So really, it's kind of a wink, and a nod, and a tip of the hat to Stan and Jack, and what really started all of this, or at least kept it going.
The Fantastic Four comic was an instant hit and it essentially allowed Marvel to keep the lights on, giving it the time to create other iconic heroes like Spider-Man and the Hulk. It is somewhat fitting to take the characters back to the beginning for their MCU debut.
The other thing the retro-future concept does is give this new version some separation from the two previous versions of Marvel's First Family on the big screen. While the very first film version of Fantastic Four was successful enough to get a sequel, that sequel, which contains similar plot elements to the new movie, and the eventual 2015 reboot, both flopped. The less that will remind fans of those films in the new one, the better.
The retro-future aesthetic of the 1960s certainly opens things up to tell a story in a unique place that won't look like any other part of the MCU. It also allows for other opportunities, like bringing the Fantastic Four into Disneyland's Tomorrowland, which was inspired by many of the same design concepts that went into creating First Steps.
Of course, it isn't just about giving a Fantastic Four movie a fresh place to tell its story, but also giving the MCU a unique place to set the adventure. Curtis revealed that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is always looking for unique ways to tell stories, so the retro-future 1960s idea was something that they simply hadn't done before, which made it exciting for all involved. He continued…
The other thing is, as you guys know from being moviegoers, and just fans in our own rights, working with Kevin and working at Marvel, it gets tougher and tougher (with) every movie and every streaming show. Because every new one, Feige challenges us to paint on a new canvas. Or else, why are we continuing to paint? You've got to deliver something new and fresh, and it keeps getting tougher and tougher. But one thing – and we know that with Guardians of the Galaxy and other movies, we've explored slivers of 1960s, Seventies, Eighties, et cetera. But setting a whole movie with the 1960s aesthetic, we thought it was a new, really cool canvas. Matt Shakman keeps saying, 'Optimism, optimism, optimism of the Sixties.' And that really unique vibe that, sadly – not to be a downer or anything, because it's not meant to be that, but we've kind of lost some of that. But what do you gain with the Sixties? That optimism is a really cool bedrock from which everything else can rise.
We know, based on the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts*, that the Fantastic Four are on their way into the proper MCU at some point, and that the full team is part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast. Whatever happens, it should still make for an exciting and unique film when The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters in July.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Surprises Fans By Naming the Worst 'Terminator' Movie

Arnold Schwarzenegger Surprises Fans By Naming the Worst 'Terminator' Movie originally appeared on Parade. As with any mainstream action franchise, the Terminator series is comprised of an odd mix between groundbreaking sci-fi films and egregiously bland schlockfests. Though often recognized as one of the most revolutionary big-budget franchises in cinematic history, the once popular Terminator series has long since fallen on hard times, thanks in large part to lesser and lesser sequels following the critical heights of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. As further evidence of Terminator's more recent middling quality, the iconic lead actor of the franchise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has similarly weighed in on the series' dramatic fall from grace. Appearing on a recent installment of Watch What Happens Live, the iconic 77-year-old actor was asked which Terminator film he feels is the weakest in the franchise. Instead of offering a diplomatic answer or shying away from the question, the Conan the Barbarian star offered a fairly blunt response to the query. "I would say the worst was probably the number four [Terminator Salvation], because that was done during the time I was governor [of California] and I was not in it," the Twins actor said. "How do you do a Terminator movie without me being in the Terminator movie?" Schwarzenegger continued. "It doesn't make any sense." Released in 2009, Terminator Salavation jumped ahead in the series' narrative timeline, focusing on the post-apocalyptic between John Connor's (Christian Bale) human Resistance and the cybernetic armies of SkyNet. Starring Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin and Bryce Dallas Howard, the film earned mostly mixed to negative reviews, halting any plans for an immediate sequel. Ultimately, following Schwarzenegger's tenure as California's governor and his formal return to acting, the series continued with 2015's next installment, Terminator Genisys, which marked the actor's first time portraying his infamous T-800 since 2003's Terminator: Rise of the Machines. The film, like its later retconned sequel Terminator: Dark Fate, both earned similarly mixed reviews upon its release. One of Gomez's earliest public relationships was with fellow teen idol Nick Jonas. The pair dated during the height of Jonas Brothers mania, capturing the hearts of Disney fans everywhere. Although their romance was brief, it did stir up some tension at the time with , who also dated Jonas. The following year, while filming in Vancouver, Gomez struck up a short-lived romance with "Twilight" star . Although their schedules soon pulled them apart, the relationship remained drama-free. In later interviews, Gomez spoke fondly of Lautner, calling him 'so sweet.' Perhaps Gomez's most well-known and emotionally complex relationship was with pop superstar Justin Bieber. The two began dating in 2010 and endured an on-again, off-again saga for nearly eight years. Notably, Blanco was a co-producer on her 2023 single "Single Soon", which many now see as a cheeky hint at their blossoming romance. After weeks of speculation, Selena confirmed the relationship in the comments of a fan post on Instagram. She not only defended Blanco from online hate but declared, 'He's the best thing that's ever happened to me.' The confirmation was unexpected, especially considering how private Gomez had been about previous relationships, but it marked a turning point. This time, she was proud to share her love. Since going public, Selena and Benny haven't shied away from showing affection online. From sweet selfies to public comments like 'I love you' and 'You make me so happy,' the couple has embraced a playful, unfiltered vibe. One year after confirming their relationship, Selena and Benny got engaged. From teenage heartbreak to mature romance, Selena Gomez's relationship journey has mirrored her personal and artistic evolution, full of lessons, growth, and tabloid frenzy.

Universal Horror Unleashed to bring year-round frights to Chicago's River West neighborhood

Get ready for ghosts and ghouls along the Chicago River. United Studios on Thursday announced the first Chicago location of its immersive horror experience "Universal Horror Unleashed," at a now-vacant building across from the new Bally's casino under construction in the River West neighborhood. Universal officials joined Mayor Brandon Johnson and other city leaders Thursday morning to announce the new entertainment venue. "Horror Unleashed is a 114,000-square-foot year-round venue, where guests will encounter bone-chilling scares as they brave their way through a themed immersive area. It's all fear all year, because horror isn't just for Halloween," Universal Destinations & Experiences President Page Thompson said. Slated to open in 2027, the facility will include "terrifying mazes, unforgettable scares, themed bars and unique food and beverage offerings, and a retail space featuring exclusive merchandise," according to a news release from the mayor's office. The mayor's office said the venue will create more than 400 permanent jobs, including operations leaders, merchandise hosts, entertainers, and makeup and prosthetics artists. "This project and redevelopment will also help uplift and revitalize a dynamic neighborhood," Johnson said. "I'm very excited about this announcement, and I have no doubt that fans of this genre will flock to our city for these memorable experiences." City and state officials estimated the project will generate more than $1 billion in economic impact for Illinois. The project will receive tax credits from the state's Economic Development for a Growing Economy program, which provides incentives to encourage companies to create and retain jobs in Illinois.
