Doctor in Gaza says hospital running out of essential supplies
A British plastic surgeon working in Gaza has said that the hospital she is working at is running out of essential supplies that cannot be substituted.
Dr Victoria Rose said medics at the Nasser Hospital have been forced to water down cleaning fluid and have been economical with anaesthetics.
She described this practice as "brutal" but acknowledged it as a necessity.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Dr Rose described the situation at the Nasser Hospital in Gaza yesterday following an attack near an aid distribution centre in Rafah.
More than 30 Palestinians were killed and dozens more injured in southern Gaza near a humanitarian aid distribution site run by a US company, according to local health officials.
Witnesses said the Israeli military had opened fire as Palestinians gathered to collect food in Rafah.
The Israeli military denied it had fired towards civilians.
Dr Rose said by midday yesterday medics at the hospital had received 28 dead bodies and declared five people dead in the emergency department.
She added that there were more than 200 gunshot wound victims.
"We know there were more involved in the incident than we actually treated," she said.
Dr Rose said that there had been a huge number of children coming in with significant, disfiguring and life-changing injuries.
She said children make up at least 50% of the operating list.
"Essentially these children have been blown up and are missing bits of their body...it's quite upsetting," she said.
She added that due to a loss of fat and muscle bulk in their body, they are smaller and thinner, with malnutrition affecting the immune system and healing.
She said that with infection setting in in children, it is progressing to life-threatening sepsis which is avoidable and would not happen in the Western world.
Dr Rose said that she is leaving Nasser Hospital tomorrow, adding that after she leaves there will be no plastic surgeon at the hospital until July.
She said it is difficult knowing that her chances of being let back in to Gaza may have gone right down due to media coverage.

The woman was discovered by local resident Theerapong while he was out for a stroll in the area at 6.30am. Authorities said the woman had been on the island for about a month and was residing in a nearby bungalow. She intended to check out of the accommodation on June 11 - one day after the island's Full Moon Party. Staff noted the woman frequently consumed alcohol and it's been reported she injured her head after a tumble outside a supermarket on June 2. Locals came to her aid, escorting her back to her accommodation, where she declined any medical help. Upon discovering her remains, officers conducted a room check and found her possessions undisturbed. The woman is thought to have last been observed enjoying a swim at the beach on Monday evening. Police Lieutenant Pongnaphat commented: "We do not believe there is anything suspicious but CCTV images will be checked to ensure that the death was accidental." Fatalities sadly continue to loom over sought-after spots such as Phuket, Pattaya, and Krabi due to potent rip currents, inadequate swimming skills, and ignoring safety signage. 'Like the golden ticket': Cork woman 'relieved' cervical cancer case is over after HSE apology
Cork native Leona Macken and her husband Alan held hands as the apology from HSE's National Screening Service chief executive Fiona Murphy was read to them. Inside Court 1 of Dublin's Four Courts, family and friends, some of whom had travelled from Leona's community in Fairhill in Cork City, could be heard sobbing. Dressed in a white blouse and beige fitted hat, the 38-year-old mother of two, who has stage 4 cancer after she was misdiagnosed during a cervical screening exam in 2016 and 2020, listened intently. Because of the urgency of her diagnosis, Ms Macken's case before the High Court was fast-tracked through the courts system. At one point the pain of hearing the words of the apology 'for the failings that have occurred and led to your diagnosis', became too much for Alan Macken, who tried to force back the tears by pressing his eyes firmly with his hands. Picture: Collins Courts His wife, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy, leaned over and kissed him saying 'it's okay' as he looked to her for strength in that moment. They hugged each other before thanking their legal team and leaving the Four Courts. 'I do feel relieved its over and that the HSE has apologised,' Ms Macken told the Irish Examiner. 'It means so much to have it, it's important. I had two misdiagnosed smears, one in 2016 and one in 2020. That's two years on from Vicky Phelan. 'I had to drag everyone through this and had to do it all myself. If I never looked into it, would I have ever known?' Ms Macken was suffering unexplained abdominal pain and bleeding and sought medical help. 'I had everything done, but all tests came back okay," she explained. "I had another smear in 2023 and I had cancer - it was stage 1 b2. Then I had a hysterectomy and was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, now I am stage 4. 'I was always conscious of my health, I paid for my first smear at 21. It was the whole (the late British reality television personality) Jade Goody story that made me get it done privately. I had a smear again in 2013, that was fine. Now I am undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy and the fight goes on. "The chemo is hard, but it's every three weeks so I try to build myself up again," Ms Macken said. Her husband Alan said it was 'hard to take it all in' as he listened to the apology in court. 'She has fought so hard, but we are getting through it, she is very brave,' he said, while Ms Macken added that 'as horrible as the situation is', she was 'hugely satisfied to get the apology'. 'It was a long journey, and even though Alan went through it and so did my family, I fought it all on my own in ways that they didn't,' she said. 'It was like the golden ticket getting them (the HSE) to acknowledge that they failed me, to be honest. I didn't realise it until I heard it, and I knew, yes, this is what I wanted.' The couple, who live in Artane, Dublin with their two children, eight-year-old Drew and five-year-old Quin, said they have 'worked together as a family' as Ms Macken undergoes intensive treatment. A BRITISH gran's dream holiday to Corfu fell flat because her all-inclusive resort "didn't have any English food" on offer. They were looking forwards to a week of relaxation, but the ordeal "horrendous from the minute they got there," Susan said. After paying £750 each for the week, the sun-seekers were expecting slap-up meals and drinks on tap. One night there was a Greek night and they had kebabs, I couldn't eat that. "It's the worst holiday I've ever been on." There are some foods Susan can't eat because she has ulcerative colitis. And she didn't fair any better on the drinks front. The all-inclusive drinks were wine, lager, ouzo, or brandy. Susan would plump for a Bacardi and Coke, but her only option was to pay €9 for a knock-off brand. She said: "By the time we paid £750 for the holiday , €70 tourist tax for me and my daughter and an extra £450 for both of our meals, I could have been to the Caribbean on that." It was thumbs down for the hotel's facilities as well. Susan said there was no entertainment as the site, which is "stuck in the middle of nowhere", and the 150-yard trek down to the private beach was too steep to navigate. The family has travelled with TUI plently of times, usually to Spain, and they had always been reassured by the firm's experience in curating trips. But after the Corfu cock-up, Susan doesn't think she can stick with the company. They offered her £100 in holiday vouchers - but Susan claims some people were offered more after complaining and declined the olive branch. A TUI UK & I Spokesperson said: "Our priority is to ensure customers have the best possible holiday experience, so we are sorry to hear that Mrs Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. We have been in touch directly with Mrs Edwards to come to a resolution."
