Ancient ‘lamp shells' practised social distancing, fossil find in China reveals

Ancient 'lamp shells' – bottom-dwelling invertebrates that once ruled the oceans – may have used hundreds of bristle-like structures to 'social distance' in a bid to improve their chances of survival, Chinese palaeontologists have discovered.
Their findings are based on a fossilised species of brachiopods – or clam-like marine animals – that was discovered in China's southwestern Guizhou province.
The fossils, discovered embedded in rocks, were found to be arranged in a 'checkerboard-like' pattern across what was once the sea floor.
Individuals of the extinct species Nucleospira calypta were likely to have used the flexible bristle-like structures – thinner than human hair – to help guide their movement and arrange their population to provide adequate space for filter feeding.
'We report exceptionally preserved soft, bristle-like structures ('setae') on 436-million-year-old brachiopods, enabling analysis of ancient behaviour,' the team said in a paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on July 21.
Using advanced imaging and spatial analysis, the researchers determined that Nucleospira calypta formed a 'highly regular' pattern of spacing that corresponded to about 1.5 to 2 times the length of their setae.
'Our findings point to a previously unrecognised mechanism shaping ecosystem structure in deep time,' said the researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' (CAS) Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology.
'This is the first time we've directly connected a specific anatomical feature – these tiny setae – to a statistically significant spatial pattern in fossils,' study authors Huang Bing and Rong Jiayu told CAS.
Brachiopods were the most diverse and common marine organisms during the Palaeozoic era (541 to 251 million years ago), according to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
There are 30,000 known brachiopod species based on fossil records, but fewer than 400 are alive today, and they are found in very cold waters in the polar regions or the deep sea.
Also called lamp shells due to their resemblance to ancient Roman oil lamps, some species of brachiopods have setae, which grow from the edges of the mantle – a vital tissue layer also found in molluscs.
'Brachiopod setae, hypothesised to function in feeding or defence, are exceedingly rare in the fossil record,' the team said.
'For filter-feeding brachiopods reliant on suspended plankton, dense aggregations could disrupt essential feeding currents, analogous to spacing optimising light capture in plants'.
The 'exceptionally well-preserved' fossils analysed by the researchers belong to the early Silurian period, around 444 to 419 million years ago.
Adults of the Nucleospira calypta species found in the Hanchiatien geological formation in Guizhou had about 200 to 250 setae in total.
The length of each typically ranged from 3mm to 8mm (0.12 to 0.3 inch), with a diameter less than a third that of a single human hair.
The team determined that the setae were so well preserved because they were first rapidly mineralised by pyrite in oxygen-free waters, and then coated in calcite when ocean conditions became less acidic.
This double coating of minerals shielded the delicate bristles from decay and being crushed.
Spatial analysis revealed that the fossilised brachiopods were not randomly scattered, but rather had a 'statistically significant, nonrandom, checkerboard-like distribution' across the rock.
'Such a pattern is characteristic of territorial behaviour or resource competition,' the researchers said.
'Strikingly, the measured average inter-individual spacing quantitatively relates to the length of the preserved setae'.
The Nucleospira calypta species lacked a pedicle, a stalk-like structure that can help marine animals anchor to the sea floor.
They also had a smooth and flat circular shell, which the researchers said possibly allowed them to slide on the ocean floor millimetre by millimetre.
When individuals would get too close, their setae would touch, which was likely to have prompted them to make gradual adjustments to their positioning, according to CAS. -- SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

GLP-1 receptor agonists, which form the recent popular weight-loss medications, make you feel full for longer, but the effect appears to wear off rather quickly once the drugs are stopped. — AFP Doctors around the world have been hailing recent 'miracle' medications that make weight loss far easier, but new research suggests that after a person stops taking some of these drugs, the weight tends to increase again rather quickly. People who received these medications lost significant weight during the therapy, and this even continued to a small extent for a few weeks after stopping the drugs, according to a research team led by Dr Wu Han and Dr Yang Wenjia from the Peking University People's Hospital in Beijing, China. However, from the eighth week after the end of therapy, the researchers said that there was a marked weight gain that persisted for many weeks. The extent of weight gain varies depending on the medication and lifestyle changes, according to the study, but there is a clear trend towards weight gain after stopping the drugs. This confirms existing findings, according to Association of Catholic Clinics chief physician for diabetology and West German Diabetes and Health Centre director Dr Stephan Martin in Dusseldorf, Germany. He said that some manufacturers of the medications had also demonstrated this themselves through randomised studies. Test subjects in the studies were given the active substances for 10 weeks, after which some were switched to a placebo. This group 'then continuously regained weight', Dr Martin reported. ALSO READ: Stop the drugs and regain the weight In the current study, the Chinese researchers also referred to an investigation in which people who had completed a 36-week treatment with the active substance tirzepatide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist) regained about half of the weight they had previously lost within a year of switching to a placebo. The newly-published meta-analysis summarised the results of 11 independent studies from around the world, including those on the drug orlistat, the combinations naltrexone/bupropion and phentermine/topiramate, as well as the group of GLP-1 receptor agonists. The data came from a total of 1,574 people in treatment groups and 893 in control groups. GLP-1 receptor agonists are included in the recent popular anti-obesity medications. In some countries, they are approved for type 2 diabetes and some cases of obesity, and they are known as lifestyle drugs for achieving a slim figure. These active substances, which are injected regularly, primarily prolong the time food stays in the digestive tract, thereby increasing the feeling of satiety. Side effects include gastrointestinal complaints. One aspect of the study stands out: Those who initially experienced significant weight loss during therapy tended to regain more weight afterwards, even if they participated in programmes to change their lifestyle, such as eating and exercise habits. 'This does not surprise me,' says professor of behavioural medicine Dr Anja Hilbert at Germany's Leipzig University Hospital. Similar experiences are seen, for example, in people who follow a very low-calorie diet – they also tend to regain more weight after the diet ends than those who undergo moderate calorie limits. However, Prof Hilbert noted that there were only a few participants for this aspect of the study. 'The results of the study actually suggest that long-term, perhaps even lifelong use of the medication may be necessary to stabilise weight,' she says. 'It is a long-term therapy,' Dr Martin emphasises. Anyone who believes they can lose weight with this therapy and then everything will be fine is mistaken. 'You need this therapy permanently,' he says. Some in the American healthcare system have raised concerns that many people may be unaware of this or may not accept it. According to studies, two-thirds of people treated for obesity – most of whom pay for the treatment themselves – stopped using the medication within a year. Zichong said he chose the university because of its rich legacy and strong academic reputation, while Ziyi added that he was also drawn to the university because Xi'an is a city full of cultural charm. On July 25, the university's official social media account congratulated the brothers. 'This incredible synchronicity is not only fate but a testament to their strength. We look forward to seeing the brothers chase their dreams side by side and shine even brighter,' the university's post said. The brothers plan to continue walking the same path. Beyond dancing robots and eager-to-help digital avatars, Shanghai's World AI Conference (WAIC) saw China stake its claim to global artificial intelligence leadership and frame itself as a clear alternative to the United States. Assumptions that the US was far ahead in the fast-moving field were upended this year when Chinese start-up DeepSeek unveiled a chatbot that matched top American systems for an apparent fraction of the cost. With AI now at the forefront of the superpowers' tech race, the WAIC that ended on Tuesday saw China set out its case to take charge on shaping its global governance, too. China, the US and other major economies are "engaged in a marathon at Formula One speed", said Steven Hai, assistant professor of tech innovation at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. "Which country will attain the upper hand can only be assessed dynamically over the course of development." China and the US dominate the AI sector — only 10 to 15 per cent of models developed in recent years were built without either's participation, according to Epoch AI, a non-profit research institute. While US companies like Google and OpenAI are still industryl e a d i n g , t h e i n s t i t u t e labelled 78 per cent of Chinese models "state- of-the-art" co mpared with 70 per cent of models built with American participation. B eijing's stated aim is to become the world's leading AI "in novation centre" by 2030. "Now China is neck-and-neck with the United States in terms of core tech, that play (for global leadership) is more relevant than ever," said Tom Nunlist, associate director for tech and data policy at Trivium China. "With a solid AI offering and the US turning inwards, the question is will Beijing's vision gain greater global traction?" In May, Microsoft's Brad Smith told the US Senate that "the number-one factor" in the tech race "is whose technology ismost broadly adopted in the rest of the world". China's offer is technical and economical. "One of the biggest differences (with the US sector) is that most of the leading models in China... are open-weight and open-source," former Google CEO Eric Schmidt told an audience at the WAIC. That means they can be adapted by other countries to fit their own needs, said George Chen, partner at Washington-based policy consultancy The Asia Group. "We already see some countries like Mongolia, Kazakhstan, even Pakistan, are trying to adopt the DeepSeek model to build their own," he said. "China has a chance to win in the aspect of sovereign AI to export its model to those countries." The comparative low cost of Chinese technology — s oftware but also hardware, for example through firms like Huawei — will be a big factor, especially for developing countries, Chen added. On Monday another Chinese start-up, Zhipu, announced its new AI model — also open-source — would cost less than DeepSeek to use. In June, OpenAI accused Zhipu of having close ties with Chinese authorities and noted that it was working with governments and state-owned firms across Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. "The goal is to lock Chinese systems and standards into emerging markets before US or European rivals can," it said. Washington has moved to protect its lead in AI, expanding efforts to curb exports of state-of-the-art chips to China in recent years. "While limiting China's share of the global AI hardware market, (these measures) have accelerated indigenous innovation and led Chinese firms to exploit regulatory loopholes," said assistant professor Hai, referring to "ri fe" smuggling and circumvention. Other challenges to homegrown firms include the closed nature of the Chinese Internet, and "g eneral issues of trust when it comes to using Chinese tech", Trivium's Nunlist said. At the WAIC, China sought to present itself as a responsible p ower. Premier Li Qiang emphasised the risks of AI and pledged to share technology with other nations, especially developing ones. His remarks contrasted sharply with US President Donald T ru mp's aggressive low-regulation "AI Action Plan" launche d just days before and explicitly aimed at cementing US dominance in the field. China released its own action plan at the WAIC, following a meeting attended by delegates from dozens of countries. Li also announced the establishment of a China-led organisation for international AI cooperation.
