On 'Andor,' minor 'Star Wars' villains play major roles

In the galaxy of 'Andor,' 'Star Wars' super villains are relegated to the shadows. The Disney+ series is more interested in what might be called supervisor villains: the bureaucrats, planners, schemers and petty functionaries who make tyranny possible.
Instead of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, we get Dedra Meero and Syril Karn, a pair of ambitious middle-managers who become an unlikely couple in their pursuit of Diego Luna's Cassian Andor.
'It's so nuanced, these villains are operating in a real gray zone, and they're representing a side of the empire that we have never seen before,' said Kyle Soller, who plays Karn. 'You're getting a real like cogs and nuts and bolts view of how the empire machine works, from the very bottom to the upper echelons.'
In a joint interview with Soller for The Associated Press, Denise Gough, who plays Meero, added, 'It can't just be brute force. An empire can't survive on brute force, it takes all these Machiavellian, tiny movements here, tiny movements there, ripple effects everywhere.'
Gough is a 45-year-old Irish actor who is also currently starring in the thriller 'The Stolen Girl' on Hulu. Soller is a 41-year-old Connecticut-born actor who has long lived in London with his wife, actor Phoebe Fox.
Their characters came together during Season 1 as each sought to collar the mysterious figure of Andor amid the burgeoning Rebel Alliance — Karn from the police side, Meero from the police-state side.
In Season 2, Meero and Karn each become caught up in the exploitation of the powder-keg planet of Ghorman, a previously peaceful place where the Galactic Empire needs to gouge-mine a mineral essential to building the Death Star. The process is likely to kill or displace its residents, among whom a rebellion brews.
A group of imperial bureaucrats meet secretly in a conference room to plan the planet's destruction, in scenes that see the return of actor Ben Mendelsohn's Orson Krennic, the Death Star builder who was the chief antagonist of 2016's 'Rogue One.' ('Andor' is a prequel.) He's a senior leader but is still a functionary subject to the mercy and whims of the dictators he serves.
'Andor' creator Tony Gilroy said the meeting was his chance to make his version of the oft-dramatized Nazi Germany Wannsee Conference, what he calls a 'PowerPoint meeting' of middle managers over lunch in 1942 to drily and practically plan the extermination of European Jews.
Krennic singles out Meero during a lunch break, seeing a strong thinker in counterintelligence. She smartly suggests encouraging the Ghorman rebellion to become violent.
'Propaganda will only get you so far," Meera says, in one of the season's key lines. 'You need Ghorman rebels you can depend on to do the wrong thing.'
The plotline pushes Karn and Meera, neither of them ideologues, out to moral cusps where it seems they may switch sides.
'You get to see how the empire is using its underlings,' Soller said. 'No matter how high up they achieve power, they're all being used, they're all pawns, and disposable.'
Gough said the difference between the two sides is that of 'a gang and a tribe.'
'The empire is the gang and the rebellion is the tribe,' she said. "The tribe has heart and loyalty and all of those things, and values all of those things, and the gang makes it seem like they do, but they don't, they disperse at the first sign of trouble, and they dispense when it's no longer needed.'
Meero and Karn's overlapping ambitions also lead them into a romantic coupling. That had Gough worried at the end of Season 1 that they would end up in an 'insipid' world of common couple tropes, but she said 'I couldn't have imagined how weird it would get."
'They've never had an example of love,' Gough said. 'They grew up in a controlled, cultlike environment. So actually the story we're telling is how do two people, when they grow up like that, how do they function in relationships?'
The domestic scenes between the two are both tense and awkward, especially with the large presence of Karn's tiny mother Eedy, played by the always-magnificently-odd actor Kathryn Hunter.
'You have this extraordinary meeting of these two women," Gough said, "and in the bedroom is the man that they're making a deal about.'
These moments can feel tangential, but the duo's arcs through their personal lives, their moral compromises and their final choices become an essential part of the overall story.
'I think it's going to be really profound as you layer that into 'Rogue One' and into the original trilogy as well,' Soller said. 'You're just like, 'Oh wow I got like the complete history of the modern empire.'
Season 2 of 'Andor' is being released on Disney+ in a novel format. The episodes drop in clusters of three each Tuesday night at 9 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. Pacific. The three-part series finale running May 13. Here's the whole schedule.

'Doctor Who' season finale surprises fans with an exit — and a familiar face
A familiar face to 'Doctor Who' fans is rejoining the long-running British sci-fi series as Ncuti Gatwa exits the lead role after two seasons. In Saturday's season finale, Gatwa's Time Lord regenerated and fans got a glimpse of Billie Piper, who played the character Rose Tyler for 35 episodes between 2005 and 2013. Tyler was a companion to versions of the doctor played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. Producers are keeping Piper's new role secret — for now. 'Just how and why she is back remains to be seen,' the BBC said in a statement after the finale aired. 'It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the TARDIS, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told,' showrunner Russell T Davies said in a statement. Piper said 'Doctor Who' has provided some of her best memories and she couldn't pass up the opportunity to come back. 'It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return ... but who, how, why and when, you'll just have to wait and see,' she said. If Piper does indeed become the Doctor, she would be the third woman to fill the famous shoes. The Rwanda-born, Scotland-raised Gatwa, 29, was the first Black actor to helm the show, but he wasn't the first Black Doctor — Jo Martin played 'Fugitive Doctor' in several episodes. Gatwa took over the role from Jodie Whittaker in 2023. Whittaker was the 13th Doctor — and the first woman to play the central galaxy-hopping, extraterrestrial Time Lord who regenerates into new bodies, taking over from Peter Capaldi in 2017. Martin was the second woman. 'Doctor Who' first aired from 1963 to 1989 and returned in 2005. In the U.S., new episodes air on Disney+. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. 'Lilo & Stich' teams with Tom Cruise and 'Mission Impossible' for monster Memorial Day weekend
This image shows Maia Kealoha, left, and Sydney Agudong in a still from the film "Lilo & Stitch." (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures via AP) By ANDREW DALTON 'Lilo & Stich' teamed with Tom Cruise for a monster Memorial Day box office weekend. Disney's live action version of 'Lilo & Stich' earned a staggering $145.5 million in North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday, the second biggest domestic opening of the year after 'A Minecraft Movie.' The movie is a faithful remake of the 2002 original's story of a six-legged alien and a Hawaiian girl that has created a big cult following in the decades since. But the duo was no little brother and sister to the better-known figures in Disney's parade of live-action remakes. It was second only to the $185 million opening of 'The Lion King' in 2019 and outshot all projections, wowing box office observers. 'This overperformed by a huge margin,' said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. 'Lilo & Stich' surpassed Cruise's 2022 'Top Gun: Maverick' as the biggest domestic Memorial Day weekend earner ever, and global estimates put it past $300 million. Paramount Pictures' 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,' the eighth and (probably) last appearance of Cruise as Ethan Hunt in a nearly three-decade run, was a distant second, but still brought in a franchise record $63 million through Sunday, outearning 'Mission: Impossible - Fallout,' which opened domestically to $61 million in 2018. And the spy thriller with Cruise's frequent partner Christopher McQuarrie in the director's chair for the fourth time in the franchise was the top global earner with $127 million. Cruise has been a relentless global promoter of his movies, and he's been the industry's loudest cheerleader for going to theaters. This film, like its predecessor in the series, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. 'The spectacle of what Tom and McQ put on the screen, it screams theatrical,' said Chris Aronson, Paramount's president of domestic distribution. 'The product they put out just screams, 'This has to be in theaters.'' The previous film, 2023's 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One' launched with a franchise-best $80 million over five days in a July opening, though it came in shy of industry expectations with a $56.2 million haul over a three-day weekend. This weekend as a whole blasted past last year, when the Memorial Day box office saw just $132 million for all films in the Friday-through-Monday span. And it appears that it will top 2013 as the best Memorial Day the industry has had, with an estimated overall total of $325 million. Critics were wearying of Disney's live action and CGI remakes of its animated classics. Mark Kennedy of The Associated Press called this 'Lilo & Stich' 'utterly unnecessary.' There were signs audiences were agreeing. 'Snow White' opened to a sleepy $43 million in March, and several similar releases were tepid. But this film tapped into a latent love for oddball pairing. It also furthered a trend that includes 'A Minecraft Movie' of PG-rated films outpacing the PG-13 movies that usually dominate, made all the more impressive by the lower kids' ticket prices the more family-oriented films bring. Dergarabedian credits a strong lead-up of films that have put people in theaters and remain the box office top 10, including 'Minecraft,' 'Sinners," 'Thunderbolts' and 'Final Destination: Bloodlines.' 'I can't think of a better lineup of films to ignite leading up to Memorial weekend to ignite the spark that got us this record-breaking holiday frame,' he said. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. Actors' union sues Fortnite over AI Darth Vader
The makers of the popular Fortnite game have created an AI version of Darth Vader, using the voice of late actor James Earl Jones that allows players to interact with the Sith Lord An actors' union is suing the makers of the Fortnite video game over the use of AI to create an interactive Darth Vader, it said. Fortnite announced last week it had obtained permission from the family of James Earl Jones to make a chatty "Star Wars" villain based on the late actor's voice work in the smash hit space opera series. Using AI models, developer Epic Games introduced the Emperor's consigliere into Battle Royale, a player-versus-player version of Fortnite in which squads form to defeat other contestants online. Users were quick to adopt the Sith Lord on their missions, posting clips of their interactions with one of cinema's most famous bad guys. Many delighted in the character's apparent wit, laughing as he tells them off for poor technique, or suggesting that they are cheating. "The empire has no need for fast food," he chides one player who asks what his McDonald's order would be. "If I were forced to endure such a culinary experience, I would take a Chicken Selects Meal with large fries and a Coca-Cola drink." But actors' union SAG-AFTRA was not amused, claiming the use of AI in video games puts performers out of work. "We celebrate the right of our members and their estates to control the use of their digital replicas and welcome the use of new technologies," a statement said Monday. "However, we must protect our right to bargain terms and conditions around uses of voice that replace the work of our members, including those who previously did the work of matching Darth Vader's iconic rhythm and tone in video games." The union, which says it represents around 160,000 people, says Epic's subsidiary did not talk to its negotiators over how AI would be used in the game. SAG-AFTRA said it had filed a claim for unfair labor practice with the National Labor Relations Board, a federal agency that protects workers' rights to organize and to negotiate. Epic Games did not immediately respond to AFP's queries, but a statement released last week cited Jones's family saying they were pleased with the project. "We hope that this collaboration with Fortnite will allow both longtime fans of Darth Vader and newer generations to share in the enjoyment of this iconic character," the family said. Performers have become concerned about the use of artificial intelligence in films, TV and video games. Improving technology makes it increasingly possible to digitally recreate the audio and visual likeness of an actor. The strikes that crippled Hollywood in 2023 stemmed in part from fears that studios would seek to use digital models to replace human performers and creators. Video game actors began their own strike against major players in the sector in July 2024. © 2025 AFP
