
Ataccama ONE brings document AI to Snowflake for better data
The announcement from Ataccama enables enterprises to extract, structure, govern, and monitor the quality of unstructured data, making a greater proportion of their information usable for analytics, AI, and business operations. With the majority of enterprise information now classed as unstructured data and continuing to grow rapidly, many organisations struggle to manage this resource effectively.
Industry research from IDC indicates that unstructured data accounts for most enterprise data and is expanding by more than 55% annually. According to market findings, 95% of businesses face difficulties in managing their unstructured data, with over half citing it as the most challenging type of information to govern. Unstructured data frequently remains siloed and difficult to leverage, creating operational risk and impacting the reliability of AI systems as these systems increasingly rely on such data for powering large language models and retrieval-augmented generation applications.
Through the integration of Ataccama ONE and Document AI within the Snowflake environment, enterprises can convert documents such as contracts, invoices, and PDFs into structured records. Natural language prompts—such as, "What is the effective date of the contract?"—are processed by the Arctic-TILT large language model developed by Snowflake, generating structured outputs stored directly in Snowflake tables.
Ataccama ONE then connects to the resulting data tables to profile the data, perform quality checks, and manage governance policies on the structured outputs. The system also allows companies to follow the data through analytics, reporting, and AI workflows by capturing lineage at the table level. Additional metadata can be added from the original documents to increase traceability where required. This process aims to reduce manual intervention, build trust in the data, and enable repeatable workflows for business teams.

This integration offers several capabilities for users. Companies can extract structured data from documents using natural language, specifying prompts such as "What is the payment term?" to convert unstructured information into structured outputs without the need for custom code. The extracted data is immediately available for use in reporting, analytics, and AI activities, as it is saved directly into Snowflake tables, ready for consumption by business intelligence tools and model pipelines without further transformation.
Ataccama ONE provides automated profiling and rule-based validation to monitor the quality of unstructured data on a continual basis, assisting teams in detecting inconsistencies and managing risks early. Document AI models can be trained and reused within Snowsight, allowing for standardised extraction across various document types at scale, including contracts, invoices, and policies. All processes, validation, and governance are performed natively in Snowflake, reducing integration complexity and improving security.

Denodo unveils DeepQuery to deliver explainable AI insights
Denodo has announced the private preview of DeepQuery, a new capability designed to enable enterprise-grade artificial intelligence to answer complex questions using live and governed data from across an organisation's systems. DeepQuery is positioned to help both large and smaller businesses by allowing users, including those without data science backgrounds, to ask multi-step, "why" questions and receive structured, explainable answers within minutes. The functionality moves beyond current generative AI (GenAI) and retrieval augmented generation (RAG) tools by connecting not just to internal data, but also by incorporating relevant external information for deeper contextual insights. Explaining reasoning Denodo describes DeepQuery as a "deep research" capability. While GenAI typically rephrases content or retrieves information from text, DeepQuery is intended to investigate, synthesise and explain reasoning across multiple sources, using information that is current and contextualised. Users can receive answers to highly specific business questions such as "What's driving changes in customer retention across regions?" or "Why did fund outflows spike last quarter?" without needing to manually aggregate information from disparate systems. In a statement, Angel Viña, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Denodo, explained the company's approach: AI's true potential in the enterprise lies not just in generating responses, but in understanding the full context behind them. Unlike siloed solutions tied to a single store, DeepQuery leverages enriched, unified semantics across distributed sources, allowing AI to reason, explain, and act on data with unprecedented depth and accuracy. According to Denodo, DeepQuery allows users to engage with live, governed data spanning systems, departments, and differing data formats, and expand those datasets with information from public sources, external applications, or trading partners. Supporting AI development DeepQuery is set to be distributed as part of the Denodo AI SDK, a set of tools aimed at making AI application development more accessible and efficient. This design intends to allow organisations to integrate deep research abilities into their applications, agents, or specialist industry solutions. Denodo asserts that while large language models and business intelligence software are increasingly incorporating research features, current approaches are often limited to web data, data lake-based architectures, or document retrieval. By contrast, DeepQuery connects to authoritative, structured enterprise data in real time, underpinned by Denodo's data virtualisation platform. Integration and standards Alongside DeepQuery, Denodo is introducing support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as part of its AI SDK. The company states this will facilitate integration between AI agents and other applications built on MCP-compliant standards, supporting customers investing in agentic AI architectures built with open principles. Researchers are equipping sharks with sensors that may help predict the power and path of hurricanes
The sharks aren't meant to replace human forecasters in any way, but they could add to the stream of data that forecasters analyse. 'The ocean is so huge, so enormous, that it's just inaccessible to anything, for the most part,' said Aaron Carlisle, a University of Delaware marine ecologist leading the effort. 'But by instrumenting the animals that live out thereyou can basically turn them into these ocean sensors that are constantly collecting data.' Hurricanes form as the atmosphere sucks up heat from water, causing air to rise and form clouds that uncork torrential rain. Measuring the distribution of heat in the ocean is key to predicting where hurricanes will go and how strong they will be. 'The ocean is the heat engine for hurricanes. If they're going to intensify, usually they're going to go over hot water,' said Travis Miles, a physical oceanographer at Rutgers University. 'If they go over cold water, they're going to weaken.' Taking the temperature of the Atlantic Ocean at various depths is no easy task. Weather satellites cannot see past the sea surface, which in the Atlantic often conceals pools of cool water. The robotic floats and gliders that meteorologists deploy to measure below-surface temperatures move slowly and are expensive to operate, leaving many data gaps in the open ocean. 'The scale of the ocean is just so massive and vast that we really have a lot of empty space where we need more observations,' said Miles, who is not involved in the shark research. The lack of data is especially acute in hurricane-prone waters in the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and off the East Coast, he added. Animal helpers Several different types of animals have served as ocean sentinels. For years, researchers have tagged southern elephant seals in the Antarctic and narwhals in the Arctic with monitors that track temperature and other conditions in otherwise difficult-to-reach polar regions. Russia has even tried recruiting dolphins and beluga whales as intelligence-gathering assets. Now, to gather intelligence in the Atlantic, Carlisle and his colleagues are turning to sharks. 'Sharks are faster than [robotic] gliders. They can stay out for longer periods of time,' said Caroline Wiernicki, a shark ecologist and PhD student working with Carlisle. 'So the hope is that we can have these sharks go out and work in concert' with existing monitors. In May, the team threw baited hooks and blocks of frozen chum off a boat 60-80km offshore, causing an oily sheen to stretch for kilometres. 'It lays out a scent trail,' Carlisle said. 'Any shark that comes across it is going to think, 'Ooo, what's that?' And then they start following it up.' The team detained two shortfin makos and attached sensors to measure the temperature, salinity and depth of the seawater. The researchers chose the makos because they return to the surface often, enabling the tags to relay the information to satellites. Makos are endangered as a result of overfishing, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Overall, one in three species of sharks and their cousins are threatened with extinction. Movies like Sharknado and Jaws - which debuted 50 years ago this year - have characterised sharks as ruthless killing machines and may have worked against efforts to protect them. But the researchers say they are big fans of sharks and don't expect the sensors to have much harmful impact on them. 'We do everything we can to minimise' the impact of puncturing the animals' fins,' Carlisle said. 'We all love the animals, so we don't want to hurt them.' So far, one of the two sharks has relayed temperature data to the researchers. The other has swum in water too shallow for the sensor to turn on. 'Each time we put one out, we learn something new, and it's a debugging exercise,' Wiernicki said. The work has been 'a great proof of concept', Carlisle added. The plan is to tag dozens of sharks a year, Wiernicki said, with the aim of feeding the data into existing hurricane computer models so they produce more accurate forecasts. In addition to the makos, the crew also caught and installed a satellite tag on a great white to track its location, but not to read temperature. That species is also a candidate for becoming a weather monitor. The team hopes to test tagging other species, including hammerheads and whale sharks. 'The more data we have, the better things will be,' said Jill Trepanier, a Louisiana State University professor specialising in hurricane climatology who is not involved in the project. 'So, if it's a shark collecting it or a buoy or glider, I say, go for it.'
