Macron: France, EU to step up Iran talks to avert conflict

The Sun13 hours ago

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday that France and its European partners would ramp up talks with Iran following more than a week of hostilities between the Islamic republic and Israel.
On Friday, British, French, German and EU top diplomats held talks in Geneva with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi a week after Israel started its bombardment.
They urged Iran to revive diplomatic efforts with the United States to find a solution in the standoff over its nuclear programme, but Tehran warned it could only consider diplomacy once Israel halted its bombardment.
On Saturday, Macron said talks will be stepped up in an effort to avoid greater conflict.
'I am convinced that a path exists to end war and avoid even greater dangers,' Macron said in English on X after holding phone talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
'To achieve this, we will accelerate the negotiations led by France and its European partners with Iran.'
Macron reiterated that 'Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.'
'It is up to Iran to provide full guarantees that its intentions are peaceful,' he added.
He once again demanded that Iran must release French nationals Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who have been held since May 2022 on espionage charges their families reject.
'Their inhumane detention is unjust,' Macron said. 'I expect them to return to France.'

Malaysians evacuated safely from Iran, expected to arrive tonight

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians evacuated from Iran are expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) tonight via Malaysia Airlines flight MH781. According to the Wisma Putra, the evacuees departed aboard Turkmenistan Airlines flight T5-647 today and are currently en route to Malaysia via Bangkok, Thailand. They are expected to arrive here at 10.50pm. The evacuation was facilitated by the Malaysian Embassy in Tehran and coordinated with the Malaysian Embassies in Ashgabat and Bangkok. On June 19, the ministry said the evacuation would involve overland travel northeast of Tehran towards the Turkmenistan border. The group would then have to proceed from the border to Turkmenistan's capital of Ashgabat. Yesterday, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan ordered the temporary closure of the Malaysian embassy in Iran, directing embassy staff in the country to return home immediately. Mohamad confirmed that many other foreign missions have done the same following the latest developments in the Middle East involving Israel. The United States announced its entry into the Iran-Israel War earlier today, stating that it has carried out attacks on three Iranian nuclear sites, including the underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordow. Entering its second week, Israel began the conflict through 'preemptive' airstrikes on several strategic sites in Iran, including nuclear facilities, missile bases and military command centres, followed with retaliation by the Gulf state.

Rights Granted Under International Law Cannot Be Taken Away Through War, Threats: Iranian President

ISTANBUL, June 22 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stressed Saturday that the rights granted to nations under international law 'cannot be taken away through war and threats,' Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. The Iranian president said in a call with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, that his country is ready for dialogue and cooperation to build confidence around its peaceful nuclear activities, but hastened to add that it will never accept demands to halt its enrichment programme, according to state-run Press TV. 'At the same time, our response to the Zionist regime's aggression will be even more forceful and resolute,' he said. 'Iran is prepared for negotiations to resolve issues, but any discussions or preconditions will only be accepted if they align with the rights and norms recognised under international law.'
