This will be the first meeting between the Revolution, which is playing its 30th season, and the second-year RIFC.
In its debut season a year ago, RIFC won the USL Eastern Conference before losing to Colorado Springs in the title game, and is 1-2-1, 4 points to start this year. Rhode Island defeated Portland Hearts of Pine of USL League One, 2-1, on Tuesday night in the third round in Lewiston, Maine. Clay Holstad
and Frank Nodarse scored three minutes apart in the first half for the visitors.
'I'm really happy that our players will get to showcase themselves against MLS opposition in our new stadium,' Rhode Island FC coach and general manager Khano Smith said in a statement. 'This is a great opportunity to highlight our team and club overall. For our players, it's their chance to showcase themselves at a higher level with a lot of eyes watching.'

Smith is no stranger to the Revolution, recording eight goals and 12 assists in 101 MLS regular-season games during two stints from 2005-08 and 2010.
In the 2005 Eastern Conference semifinals, Smith scored the series-winning goal in the 83rd minute to help the Revolution defeat New York/New Jersey en route to the first of three straight MLS Cup appearances. While he did not play in the 2005 MLS Cup, Smith came off the bench in '06 and started in '07.

Smith also featured during New England's 2007 US Open Cup title.
The Revolution did not compete in the in-season tournament a year ago, and lost in the Round of 32 in 2023 at home to Pittsburgh of USL Championship.
New England has won two of its last three games and sits 12th in the Eastern Conference at 2-4-1, 7 points. The Revolution host New York City FC on Saturday night.

Lions Receiving Strong Interest From Veteran Pass Rusher

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions were the best team in the NFL during the 2024 season. However, they were unable to win a game in the playoffs. After compiling a 15-2 record throughout the regular season, the Lions were quickly defeated at home by the red-hot Washington Commanders in the Divisional round of the playoffs. That loss has sat with them all offseason. Despite the pain of the loss, Detroit is expected to be one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the league again in 2025. They also have key players, such as Aidan Hutchinson, back from injuries that knocked them out before the playoffs. One area of need could be the pass rush, especially to protect from potential injuries like the team dealt with last year. Keeping that in mind, Za'Darius Smith, who is currently a free agent, has shown major interest in returning to Detroit. Of course, he was acquired from the Cleveland Browns ahead of the trade deadline last year and finished the season with the Lions. During a recent interview with USA Today, Smith made it clear where he wants to play. "We both know where I want to be," Smith said. "Hopefully, I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great. When I'm there, I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things. Hopefully, I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit." Smith also talked about how he thinks he could help Hutchinson continue improving. Read more: Lions Trade Idea Would Land Shedeur Sanders From Browns "I'm still a veteran. He's still a young guy. I can help him with many things. He's already great, but as a player, there are some tools that I know that I can help him with," Smith said. "And there are some things as a young guy that he can help me with." Most of this situation will depend on the financial aspect of it. Smith may need to take a discount if he wants to play in Detroit. This vocal interest from Smith in the Lions could hint at a willingness to take less to play for the franchise. Only time will tell, but this is a potential fit to watch for Detroit. For more Detroit Lions and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo Receives Massive Update Amid Trade Rumors

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo have been one of the most talked about storylines in the NBA over the last couple of weeks. Ever since it was reported that he was "open-minded" to be traded by the Bucks, the rumors have been flying. Many different teams have been connected as potential trade destinations. While there is always a chance that a player could get traded in the NBA, a new update has come to the forefront of this particular situation. Cox/Getty Images According to ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst, Milwaukee is not looking to trade Antetokounmpo. Windhorst also reported that the superstar forward has not requested any kind of trade from the Bucks. "He has not asked for it. The Bucks are not looking to trade him." This does not mean that Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee won't at least consider a move. He could still make some kind of request or the team might decide to re-tool. That being said, it's much more likely after this report that Antetokounmpo is back with the Bucks for the 2025-26 season and that the team will look to build a better roster around their superstar. During the 2024-25 NBA season, Antetokounmpo helped lead Milwaukee to a 48-34 record and the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. The Bucks went up against the Indiana Pacers in the first round and were quickly eliminated in just five games. Throughout the course of the season, the 30-year-old superstar averaged 30.4 points per game to go along with 11.9 rebounds 6.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks, while shooting 60.1 percent from the floor. Read more: Heat Trade Proposal Would Bring Kevin Durant to South Beach It's hard to find franchise players like Antetokounmpo. He can do it all. Keeping him in town and building the roster out different around him would be the best possible outcome for Milwaukee. However, the fact of the matter is that Damian Lillard tore his Achilles in the playoffs against the Pacers and his status for next season is very much up in the air. No one know what the upcoming offseason has in store for the Bucks and Antetokounmpo. This report gives reason for optimism about the two sides sticking together, but things could still change. Lakers 2024-25 season player grades: Dorian Finney-Smith

Lakers 2024-25 season player grades: Dorian Finney-Smith Over the last few seasons, the Los Angeles Lakers have had an utter lack of two-way players, and in particular, 3-and-D wings. In late December, shortly after a bad, prolonged slump, they acquired veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith in a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. Finney-Smith greatly helped the Lakers turn things around the rest of the way. In doing so, he became a part of their inner core, and he is a player who most feel they need to keep this offseason, as he can turn down his player option for next season to become a free agent. Dorian Finney-Smith's season stats In 43 regular-season games with the Lakers, Finney-Smith averaged 7.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.9 steals in 28.8 minutes a game while shooting 44.2% from the field and 39.8% from 3-point range. In the first round of the NBA playoffs, he averaged 6.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 34.0 minutes a game while shooting 41.4% from the field and 36.8% from 3-point range. Overall Analysis During the first two months of this season, the Lakers were a rather weak defensive team, but they improved significantly in that department starting in January. More than anyone else, Finney-Smith sparked that transformation. While he played at the 4 the majority of the time, he has the ability to effectively guard players at multiple positions. His contributions on the defensive end don't show up on the stat sheet, as he doesn't get a lot of steals or force many turnovers, and he's not a shot-blocker. But he does muck up the game for his opponents, and that is evidenced in the plus-minus and net rating categories. During the regular season, L.A. had a net rating of 11.1 when he was on the court, which was the highest net rating of any of its rotation players. Its 109.1 defensive rating when he was on the court was also the highest such figure of any of its rotation players. Finney-Smith also gave the Lakers a much-needed 3-point sniper. There is a sentiment that good and great 3-point shooters suddenly stop hitting from downtown when they join the Purple and Gold. But Finney-Smith put a big dent in that claim. He didn't only hit a high percentage from 3-point range; he also attempted 4.8 shots a game from that distance. He became a big part of a bench unit that was offensively inept but contributed thanks to its defensive grit and toughness. That unit included noted "dogs" such as Jarred Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent and former G Leaguer Jordan Goodwin. What's next for Finney-Smith? The forward's player option for the 2025-26 campaign would pay him $15.38 million. His next contract may be his last one, since he is 32 years of age, and many seem to believe he will opt out, whether he wants to stay or go. He claimed a few weeks ago that he hasn't really thought about whether he wants to remain put. But he also said that being with the Lakers and with former Dallas Mavericks teammate Luka Doncic has been "amazing." Overall grade: B-plus/A-minus
