Cook County Sheriff substation still not open in South Loop, despite planned June launch
A Cook County Sheriff's substation was supposed to open in the South Loop near the Roosevelt CTA Red Line stop on June 1, but hasn't even as the area continues to struggle with violent crime. The substation is marked, but not up and running yet. The Cook County Sheriff's Office said they have a presence in the area, but did not say when the substation's doors would open. A 16-year-old girl was stabbed Tuesday night just feet from the Red Line stop and where the substation is supposed to be. Chicago police said the stabbing started as an argument, and the teen was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. "This area of the South Loop has a been a problematic area for a long time, so we tried to be creative and see how we can bring more resources to this area. So I asked the Cook County Sheriff for help," said 34th Ward Alderman Bill Conway. The substation was supposed to be operable in early June, but now in early August it still isn't. "I will say I do appreciate the sheriffs are operational. They are working on it. And I do hope we can get it open as soon as possible," Conway said. According to the sheriff's office, "as soon as possible" could be as soon s Monday, saying in a statement that they are already patrolling the area and, "We are engaged in ongoing conversations with local residents, business owners, and elected officials regarding concerns about crime." Another Chicago substation for the sheriff's office in River North has focused on specific crimes like carjackings, car thefts and retail theft. "This sheriff's office is really going to be looking at overall crime, but specially looking what's going on in the Jewel parking lot here as well as at this L station as well, where there's been a lot of problems over the years," Conway said. The sheriff's office said that despite public perception, crime is down in the South Loop compared to last year. A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said as of July 29, 2025 there have been 88 reported violent crimes in the Near South Side community area, down from 100 in the same time period in 2024, 108 in 2023 and 117 in 2022. The sheriff's office said when adjusted for population, the Near South Side saw 33 violent crimes per 10,000 people, which is below the citywide average of 57 crimes per 10,000 people. The Sheriff's Office is finalizing the installation of infrastructure at the South Loop substation and is working to open the location as soon as Monday. This space was offered to us as it was vacant and the community requested our presence in the area. We are engaged in ongoing conversations with local residents, business owners, and elected officials regarding concerns about crime. Even though the substation is not officially open, we have been assigning officers to patrol in the area. We look forward to our partnership with the community and addressing crime and quality of life concerns, as we are doing at our substations in Austin, Auburn Gresham, River North, Water Tower Place, and One Chicago.

Robinson Township officer charged in alleged road rage incident
A Robinson Township police officer is facing charges in connection with a road rage incident. Court paperwork shows Steve Pies was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of simple assault. Sources told KDKA that Pies, who was off duty, followed the alleged victim to his workplace, where things got physical. A spokesperson for the Allegheny County Police Department said it happened on Forest Grove Road in Robinson Township on July 2. The alleged victim, according to sources, is Al Cannella, who attended Monday's Robinson Township board of supervisors meeting. He sat in the second row with his wife and told KDKA he is not ready to talk about what happened. "You will know in time," he said at the meeting. Cannella, who runs Al's Service on Forest Grove Road, suffered injuries to his head and ribs, sources told KDKA. Before the charges, the Robinson Township solicitor confirmed a police officer had been suspended without pay. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Two Chinese nationals in California accused of illegally shipping Nvidia AI chips to China
By Karen Freifeld (Reuters) -Two Chinese nationals in California were arrested and charged with illegally shipping tens of millions of dollars' worth of AI chips to China, including Nvidia H100s, the U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesday. Chuan Geng, 28, of Pasadena, and Shiwei Yang, 28, of El Monte, exported the advanced Nvidia chips and other technology to China from October 2022 through July 2025 without the required licenses from the U.S. Commerce Department, the Justice Department said, citing an affidavit filed with the complaint. According to the affidavit, Geng and Yang's El Monte-based company, ALX Solutions, was founded in 2022, shortly after the U.S. imposed sweeping export controls on technology to China to slow Beijing's military modernization and began to require licenses for the chips. China opposed the U.S. move as harming normal trade. Over 20 shipments from ALX went to shipping and freight forwarding companies in Singapore and Malaysia, which are often used as transshipment points for illegal goods to China, a federal agent, who works for the Commerce Department, said in the affidavit. ALX received a $1 million payment from a China-based company in January 2024 and other payments from companies in Hong Kong and China, not from the freight forwarding companies, the agent said. Nvidia H100s are advanced chips that can be used to train large language models and many other applications. Records show that from at least August 2023 to July 2024, ALX Solutions bought over 200 Nvidia H100 chips from San Jose, California-based server maker Super Micro Computer, declaring that the customers were in Singapore and Japan, the agent said. On one 2023 invoice valued at $28,453,855, ALX said the customer was in Singapore, but a U.S. export control officer in Singapore could not verify the chips arrived in the country and the company did not exist at the listed location, the document says. "This case demonstrates that smuggling is a nonstarter," a Nvidia spokesperson said in a statement. "We primarily sell our products to well-known help us ensure that all sales comply with U.S. export control rules." Diverted products have "no service, support or updates," the statement added. Super Micro said in a statement it was "firmly committed to compliance with all U.S. export control regulations." It said it did not comment on ongoing legal matters, but cooperated with authorities in any such proceedings. Geng and Yang appeared in federal court in Los Angeles on Monday, the Justice Department said. Geng, a permanent resident, was released on $250,000 bond. Yang, who overstayed her visa, has a detention hearing on August 12. Lawyers for the defendants did not respond to requests for comment.
