Bullish Signals Mount as Q1 Earnings Surprise to the Upside

Bullish Signals Mount as Q1 Earnings Surprise to the Upside

Globe and Mail01-05-2025

What a week it's shaping up to be. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average have each risen seven days in a row, and all signs point to an eighth consecutive gain.
It's a welcomed turnaround from the volatility we've seen recently. A notable breadth thrust has led to renewed buying pressure in stocks. At one point during this relief rally, we saw a 3-day stretch that featured 70% or more advancing issues in each session.
That's a relatively rare feat that has occurred only 28 other times dating back to 1950. And 27 out of 28 times, stocks were higher one year out from the date of each signal with an average return of nearly 19%. Furthermore, a rare Zweig Breadth Thrust (discovered by Marty Zweig) triggered last week, another sign that the bottom for this latest downward move is in. Breadth thrusts equate to more stocks participating in the ride higher.
Q1 Earnings Relieve Investor Anxiety
The first-quarter earnings season is now through the halfway mark with 256 S&P 500 members reporting results. Total Q1 earnings for these companies are up 14% from the same period last year on 4% higher revenues. Things will continue to heat up this week with tech giants Apple AAPL and Amazon AMZN dominating the slate.
After the bell yesterday, Facebook-parent Meta Platforms META and tech giant Microsoft MSFT both beat estimates on the top and bottom lines. Despite worries of an advertising slowdown amid tariff uncertainty, Meta delivered earnings of $6.43 per share on revenues of $42.3 billion, representing respective beats of 23.2% and 2.6% relative to consensus EPS and revenue estimates.
The social media company also provided upbeat revenue guidance, but did raise its full-year capital expenditure estimates. META shares were up more than 5% in early trading Thursday:
On a similar note, Microsoft surpassed its fiscal Q3 estimates on solid cloud bookings. Earnings of $3.46 per share marked an 8.1% surprise versus the $3.20/share Zacks Consensus Estimate. Microsoft Cloud revenue of $42.4 billion was up better than 20% year-over-year and was higher than the anticipated $42.2 billion. MSFT stock surged 9% at Thursday's open:

Economic Data Puts Pressure on Fed to Act
The solid earnings numbers helped quell concerns regarding the economy after investors digested mixed signals on Wednesday.
An update on Q1 GDP showed the US economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.3%, according to data from the Commerce Department. The figure, which is adjusted for seasonal factors and inflation, came in lower than the 0.1% estimate.
It was the first quarter of negative growth since Q1 of 2022, a stark contrast to the 2.9% annualized gain we saw throughout the past two years. Imports soared 41.3% during the quarter, driven by a 50.9% increase in goods as companies attempted to get ahead of anticipated tariffs from the Trump administration.
The Fed's preferred inflation gauge – the core PCE index – came in flat over the prior month, below expectations of a 0.1% increase and the 0.5% gain seen in February. In the 12 months through March, core inflation was up 2.6%, in line with estimates.
President Trump's tariff campaign has stoked fears that the economy will enter a period of slow growth and resurgent inflation. Still, market participants are pricing in four rate cuts this year. Following the latest inflation data, odds of a rate cut in June climbed to roughly 67%.
Final Thoughts
After a remarkable and broad breadth thrust, the short-term trend has reversed back up. The data has begun to align with the possibility of a resumption of the longer-term bullish trend.
On the flip side, the latest gains have pushed the major US indexes near areas of potential resistance. After such a volatile and fast-paced correction, it is imperative to balance risk versus reward and manage downside effectively.
Bulls would like to see further positive reactions to earnings. Make sure to take advantage of all that Zacks has to offer as the first-quarter earnings season rolls on.

Judge tosses lawsuit over Trump's firing of US African Development Foundation board members

A federal judge has tossed out a lawsuit over President Donald Trump's dismantling of a U.S. federal agency that invests in African small businesses. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon in Washington, D.C., dismissed the case on Tuesday, finding that Trump was acting within his legal authority when he fired the U.S. African Development Foundation's board members in February. In March, the same judge ruled that the administration's removal of most grant money and staff from the congressionally created agency was also legal, as long as the agency was maintained at the minimum level required by law. USADF was created as an independent agency in 1980, and its board members must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. In 2023, Congress allocated $46 million to the agency to invest in small agricultural and energy infrastructure projects and other economic development initiatives in 22 African countries. On Feb. 19, Trump issued an executive order that said USADF, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the Inter-American Foundation and the Presidio Trust should be scaled back to the minimum presence required by law. At the time, USADF had five of its seven board seats filled. A few days later, an administration official told Ward Brehm that he was fired, and emails were sent to the other board members notifying them that they had also been terminated. Those emails were never received, however, because they were sent to the wrong email addresses. The four board members, believing they still held their posts because they had not been given notice, met in March and passed a resolution appointing Brehm as the president of the board. But Trump had already appointed Pete Marocco as the new chairman of what the administration believed to now be a board of one. Since then, both men have claimed to be the president of the agency, and Brehm filed the lawsuit March 6. Leon said that even though they didn't receive the emails, the four board members were effectively terminated in February, and so they didn't have the authority to appoint Brehm to lead the board. An attorney for Brehm did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. Another lawsuit over the dismantling of the agency is still pending before the same judge. In that case, two USADF staffers and a consulting firm based in Zambia that works closely with USADF contend that the Trump administration's efforts to deeply scale back the agency wrongly usurps Congress' powers. They also say Marocco was unlawfully appointed to the board, in part because he was never confirmed by the Senate as required. Leon's ruling in Brehm's case did not address whether the Trump administration had the power to install Marocco as board chair on a temporary basis.

Why Palantir Stock Soared in May

Shares of Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) were up in May. The company's stock finished the month up 11.3%. The move came as the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) was up 5.5% and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) was up 7.9% during the month. The artificial intelligence (AI)-powered data analytics company released mostly positive earnings and announced several key new partnerships, and CEO Alex Karp accompanied President Trump on a trip to Saudi Arabia. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » A mostly positive quarter Palantir reported Q1 earnings per share (EPS) of $0.13 on sales of $884 million. That revenue figure was up 39% year over year (YOY), beating Wall Street expectations. There was some cause for concern, however, as global sales declined 10% YOY. Karp goes to Saudi Arabia Given this international weakness, the timing of Karp's trip to Saudi Arabia could not have been better. Karp, along with other high-profile CEOs, accompanied President Trump on a trip to the Middle Eastern country. The trip ended with Trump announcing that Saudi Arabia had committed to $600 billion in investments and, although specifics were light, some of this is likely to flow into Palantir's coffers. New partnerships Palantir announced new partnerships with xAI, the Joint Commission, and the manufacturer Fedrigoni. The partnerships will all leverage the company's unique capabilities to boost efficiency, maximize profits, and reshape outdated business practices. The wide range of distinct organizations and problems shows the incredible adaptability of Palantir's technology. Beware the valuation This is nothing new for investors who have followed the company at all, but the fact is that Palantir stock is incredibly expensive. The company's price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) currently sits north of 570. Its price-to-sales ratio (P/S) is 105. These are astronomical numbers. Consider this: When Nvidia was seeing peak growth in 2024 -- growth that far outstrips what Palantir is delivering today -- the chipmaker's P/E and P/S were both roughly half that of Palantir's. And when Cisco was at its peak in 2000, before it became the face of the dot-com crash, it too only reached roughly half the valuation that Palantir now carries. I do not believe Palantir can justify this valuation, and it is a matter of time before the stock comes back to Earth. Although it's clear that the company offers an extremely valuable product, I think it's fair to classify it as a meme stock at this point: Too much of its value is driven by pure hype. Should you invest $1,000 in Palantir Technologies right now? US depends on Canadian oil, despite Trump's comments, Cenovus CEO says

The U.S. relies on Canadian oil imports, despite comments to the contrary by U.S. President Donald Trump, the CEO of Cenovus Energy told the Global Energy Conference in Calgary on Tuesday. Trump has threatened on-again, off-again tariffs on Canada's oil, of which nearly 4 million barrels per day are exported to the United States. Canada is the world's fourth-largest oil producer, and fifth-largest natural gas producer. Trump has previously said the U.S. does not need to import goods, including oil and gas, from Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who won a minority government in April on a wave of anti-Trump voter sentiment, has said the country's old relationship with the U.S. based on steadily increasing economic integration is over. 1:59 Alberta's energy sector responds to lower tariff Jon McKenzie, who heads oil sands company Cenovus and chairs the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers industry group, said trade tensions between the two nations have highlighted the need for Canada to diversify its exports. 'The reality is we are hardwired into the U.S. system.' Canada depends on U.S. refiners to buy the vast majority of its exported oil, while landlocked U.S. refineries in the Midwest are configured to process the grade of crude that Canada produces. McKenzie said Canada has the opportunity to grow its oil output in the coming decades, and added the country's new government needs to recognize Canada's co-dependence with the U.S. and seek to improve that relationship. 'We need to make sure that we don't act viscerally when we're threatened, and that we act intelligently in our long-term interest,' he said. As part of its response to the U.S. tariff threat, Carney has pledged to identify and fast-track projects of national interest aimed at helping Canada become what he calls a conventional and clean energy superpower. McKenzie said the oil and gas sector does not want the federal government to pick winners and losers by deciding which projects to fast-track. He said the industry instead wants to see broad regulatory reform that will remove barriers to investing in oil and gas projects. Story continues below advertisement
