Trader Joe's to open first New Orleans store this week

Axiosa day ago
Trader Joe's will open its first store in New Orleans on Thursday, with another to follow later.
Why it matters: The grocer's expansion raises the stakes in southeast Louisiana's crowded grocery scene.
The big picture: The Mid-City store opens Thursday morning at 2501 Tulane Ave., says The Feil Organization, which owns the property.
Trader Joe's also has a store in the works at the corner of Napoleon Avenue and Freret Street, according to its website.
It already has locations in Metairie and Baton Rouge.
Zoom in: Trader Joe's sells products under its own label, and shoppers often view the items as dupes for higher-priced options elsewhere.
The grocer is known for its frozen items, cheap wine, creative snacks (pickle popcorn!), fresh flowers, beauty products and customer service.
Zoom out: Trader Joe's has less than 1% market share of the New Orleans grocery market as of last year, according to Chain Store Guide.
Walmart is the top dog with 38.2%, followed by Rouses, Sam's Club, Costco and Winn-Dixie, the data shows. Go deeper.

Billionaire Alice Walton Donates $100,000 to Cuomo Mayor PAC

By Updated on Save Billionaire Walmart Inc. heiress Alice Walton gave $100,000 in recent days to the Super PAC backing former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's campaign for New York City mayor. The donation, dated Aug. 6, is among a handful of six-figure contributions the PAC — Fix the City — has received in recent weeks.
