Vantika Agrawal continues good form as she stuns higher-ranked Kateryna Lagno at FIDE Women's World Cup 2025
Indian Grandmasters Vantika Agrawal and Divya Deshmukh staked their claims for the pre-quarterfinals after winning the first game of the third round against Kateryna Lagno of Russia and Teodora Injac of Serbia, respectively, in the FIDE Women's World Cup 2025 in Batumi (Georgia) on Saturday.
With the knockout event down to the last 32 participants, Vantika crushed higher-ranked Lagno, giving another indication of her fast-growing stature among the Indian women.
Divya was the favourite in her match, and she lived up to the expectations by beating Injac with the black pieces. She is now a firm favourite amongst the five remaining Indians in the fray.

Meanwhile, the highest rated Indian Koneru Humpy settled for a draw with Kulon Klaudia of Poland with white pieces. D Harika also could not win and signed peace with Tsolakidou Stavroula, while another fancied Indian, R. Vaishali, played out a draw with Carissa Yip of the United States.
Vantika scripts big win against Lagno
Top seed Lei Tingjei of China defeated Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria. It remains to be seen how the Bulgarian comes to terms with a situation where she has to beat the highest-rated player in the event to force a tiebreaker.
Another Chinese favourite, Zhu Jiner, put it across Aleksandra Maltsveskaya of Poland to be in the running to win a spot in the last 16.
However, the day belonged to Vantika as she stole the limelight against one of the fancied Russians in the event. As is known, the Russian players here play under the FIDE flag.
What started off with a Grunfeld took shape in a symmetrical pawn structure in the middle game, and Lagno struggled to find the right plan. Vantika was in her elements, though, as she went for complications at the first opportunity, and it was clear that Lagno was no match for the Indian in the tactics that emerged.
An erroneous move by Lagno on her 20th turn gave Vantika an extra piece, and she never looked back. In the return game as black, Vantika just needs a draw to qualify for the next round.
Divya outclassed Teodora Injac from a level-looking endgame arising out of a queen pawn opening. The Serbian was not able to calculate too well, and Divya cashed in without missing much.

Surfer Tayin riding success crest
CHENNAI: AT only 16 years of age, Tayin Arun is at the forefront of a new generation of talented surfers, part of a brand-new movement of Indian surfing. Enjoying an almost meteoric rise in the junior divisions, the surfer broke through to the national surfing team last year, and is now looking to prove his worth with the rest of his teammates at the upcoming ASF Asian Surfing Championships in Mahabalipuram to be held from August 3 to 12. Hailing from Akkarai, Tayin is no stranger to sports. His elder sister Eloksi Arun is a batter for the Tamil Nadu women's cricket team. Reminiscing about his earlier days, Tayin recalls, 'I remember playing many sports as a kid, and surfing seemed to be the sport that I wanted to join. But the infrastucture wasn't developed then. Moreover, many people were scared to send their younger kids out to the sea. So, I only started to learn surfing when I was nine.' Tayin learnt surfing in Kovalam at the Surf Turf, Chennai's first surfing school considered one of the best in the region. This allowed him to not only hone his craft, but also give him exposure and access to surfing equipment. 'Boards are really expensive when you import it, and sometimes not getting access to them can hamper your growth. I used the boards given to me by the TT Group (owned by Arun Vasu, the founder of Surf Turf) for many years because you couldn't get it easily from anywhere else in India," said the young surfer. Today, due to his excellent performances at tournaments such as the Covelong Classics and at the Indian Open of Surfing, he has secured himself sponsorship from the TT Group to get equipment.

Erigaisi reaches SFs, Praggnanandhaa edged out
Las Vegas, July 18 (UNI) A new chapter will be written in the Arjun Erigaisi–Levon Aronian saga as the Indian Grandmaster stormed into the semifinals of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, defeating Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov 1.5-0.5 in just two games of the 30'+30" time control. Arjun, with this win, became the first Indian ever to reach the semifinals stage of a Freestyle Grand Slam Tour event. The first game against Abdusattorov was drawn after a tense positional struggle. However, in the second game, Arjun capitalised on a questionable exchange sacrifice by the Uzbek prodigy. A later knight trade further widened the material gap, and despite stiff resistance, Arjun converted the advantage into a crucial victory. With this, Arjun has set up a highly anticipated clash with seasoned American GM Levon Aronian, who got past Hikaru Nakamura 2.5-1.5 in their semifinal encounter. Meanwhile, in arguably the most thrilling quarterfinal battle of the event, R Praggnanandhaa and Fabiano Caruana (USA) exchanged victories across six games in three time controls — 30'+30", 10'+10", and 5'+2". The marathon eventually culminated in an Armageddon game where Caruana prevailed, securing a spot in the semifinals. Hans Niemann (USA) also made headlines by eliminating Javokhir Sindarov (UZB), ensuring his place in the semifinals, where he will face Caruana. In the Lower Bracket, Magnus Carlsen (NOR) demonstrated vintage dominance as he blanked Vidit Gujrathi 2-0. Carlsen now awaits his next opponent from among the Upper Bracket Quarterfinal losers in the Lower Bracket QF. The Upper Bracket semifinals and Lower Bracket quarterfinal Game 1 are scheduled to begin today at 10:30 pm IST. UNI BDN BM
