Manipur to close relief camps, resettle inmates with financial assistance

Guwahati: Manipur, which is under President's Rule since Feb, has planned to close about 350 relief camps housing thousands of people displaced by the ethnic violence since 2023 by this year-end and resettle them with financial assistance from the govt in three-phases beginning July.
Manipur chief secretary PK Singh on Friday said a structured rehabilitation programme for displaced individuals has been finalsied following detailed consultations with the ministry of home affairs. "We've had a good round of discussions with the central govt and MHA. The first phase involves those who can go back immediately — by July — and that process has already begun. The number of displaced people has come down to 57,000 from 62,000," Singh said.
He added, "We have come up with a three-phase plan. First, those who want to immediately go back to their homes. We expect a good number will go back by July. And as we speak, yesterday I took stock of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts and people have started going back to their homes."
Singh said the second round would begin by Oct and the third by Dec.
Singh further added that the govt has decided to provide funds to these displaced people under three different categories.

The first one involves about 7000-8000 people whose houses have been destroyed. Each family will get about Rs 3 lakh each to re-build their houses.
The second category is for about 7,000 people who have fled their homes but their houses were not destroyed. But over two years of neglect have left their houses in a dilapidated state. "So, there will be some kind of monetary help for those people," Singh said.
"And the third category is for those who, even after Dec, will not be able to return to their homes immediately.
These can be about anything around 8000 to 10,000, and they will be allowed to stay in the prefabricated houses for which we are building a thousand more," Singh added.
He said the situation is improving and farming is also going on peacefully. "I'm glad to share that both sides are farming together. I mean within eyeball to eyeball distance and they are sharing water. That's a very good sign," he added.
The chief secretary said the govt is appealing to all civil society organizations to maintain calm and added that "some mischievous elements are there everywhere. Some people want something mischievous to happen."

Cong must name its meeting ‘Samajika Anyaya Samara Bheri': Bandi Sanjay
Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar questioned the Congress party holding the 'Samajika Samara Bheri' (public meeting on struggles for Social Justice) in the city, attended by AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge. He said on Friday, the Congress party has ruled the 'country and our state for more than half a century, yet has never appointed a Backward Class (BC) person as Prime Minister or Chief Minister.' It exposes the betrayal of the people, especially as they have failed to implement even the six guarantees that would primarily benefit Dalits, backwards classes, and weaker sections. Against this backdrop, he demanded the justification for holding the meeting. He demanded that AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge answer the people. Otherwise, this meeting should be renamed to 'Social Injustice Samara Bheri.' He said in contrast to the Congress, the BJP appointed Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit; Draupadi Murmu, a tribal; and Abdul Kalam, a minority, as President. The BJP's history includes providing positions to 27 OBCs, 12 Dalits, 6 minorities, and 8 women in the central cabinet—a historic achievement. The BJP has also appointed him, a BC, as a central minister. Sanjay Kumar noted that he, along with other BC leaders like Dr. K. Laxman and Bandaru Dattatreya, has received significant positions. Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, who is experienced, is being misled by wrong information. During the last agriculture season, 'Telangana required 9 lakh metric tons of urea, but the central government supplied 12 lakh metric tons. It was 3 lakh metric tons more than what the state of Telangana requested. The Centre is willing to provide the same or more during the current agriculture season.' However, he questioned where the additional urea that remained from the earlier agriculture season went and criticised the state for blaming the Centre without accounting for these discrepancies. 'The onus is on the state government to take appropriate action if there are any hurdles. The Centre is willing to consider Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao's requests favourably. The state must communicate the facts to the public.

Kottayam medical college collapse: Minister Vasavan visits Bindu's family, hands over solatium
KOTTAYAM: Amid allegations against ministers for disregarding the family of Bindu, who was killed when a building collapsed at the Government Medical College hospital in Kottayam, Cooperation Minister V N Vasavan visited Bindu's house at Thalayolaparambu near Vaikom on Friday evening. During the visit, Vasavan offered condolences to the grieving family and handed over an amount of Rs 50,000 to Bindu's mother Seetha Lakshmi as immediate assistance for the family. According to Vasavan, the amount was allocated from the fund of the Hospital Development Committee (HDC) of Kottayam Government MCH. He added that the government would announce further compensation for the family after a meeting of the state cabinet soon. 'Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has assured all assistance to the family. The ongoing treatment for Bindu's daughter, including her surgery, will be provided at no cost. Additionally, a family member will be offered a temporary job through the Hospital Development Committee. The government stands firmly with the family during this difficult time,' he said. Vasavan added that the government has taken all the steps to support and protect the family. Moreover, the government also took immediate steps to transfer all patients from the compromised building as well. A report has been sought from the district collector and further steps will be taken based on its findings, he said.
