Drake Bell reunites with Josh Peck, reveals the toll of sexual abuse by ‘monster' dialogue coach

Drake Bell, a year after speaking out about the abuse he endured during his Nickelodeon days, has found 'therapy' in a long-anticipated reunion.
'Drake & Josh' co-stars Bell and Josh Peck reunited on Peck and Ben Soffer's 'Good Guys' podcast to reminisce on their years-long friendship, revisit their hit sitcom and reevaluate how the abuse Bell experienced by a former Nickelodeon dialogue coach impacted both. Bell began his walk down memory lane with a disclaimer.
'I don't know if this is just 'cause we've made a lot of bad choices in our lives or if it's just from trauma but I have a lot of trouble remembering a lot of things,' he said.
The hourlong conversation between the 38-year-old former co-stars, who first shared the screen on Nickelodeon's 'Amanda Show' before headlining 'Drake & Josh,' built on the revelations Bell shared last year in the documentary 'Quiet on Set.' In the four-part ID docuseries, Bell went public about the sexual abuse he faced by former Nickelodeon dialogue coach Brian Peck (no relation to Josh Peck). Brian Peck was convicted of child sex abuse in 2004 but his victim's name was not disclosed at the time. Bell confirmed in 'Quiet on Set' that he was the unidentified victim referenced in the case.
On Monday's podcast, Peck told his ex co-star that during the early days of 'Drake & Josh' he was unaware of Bell's experience and that 'this separation started between us' as a result. Bell explained that the investigation into Brian Peck and 'all the stuff you saw in the documentary' coincided with the filming of the 'Drake & Josh' pilot. That made filming and returning to a Nickelodeon set complicated, Bell said.
Being on set was where he felt 'happiest and most comfortable' but 'the worst part was every day I got there, the monster was there,' he said. Bell said despite his desires to focus on building his comedy partnership with Peck, 'I came back to the same stage, the same parking lot, the same dressing rooms, the same green room, the same makeup rooms.'
Peck responded: 'Everything's triggering.'
Bell recalled how the investigation into Brian Peck's abuse quietly loomed over production. He said people on set allegedly allowed his abuser's behavior and did 'not do anything.' Bell also recalled 'losing my hair' due to the stress of the investigation.
'I had these giant scabs on my head,' he said, 'these were like golf-ball-sized scabs.'
Peck said he was not aware Bell suffered sexual abuse until 'Quiet on Set,' but recalled 'feeling something happened.' He remembered asking Bell during their 'Drake & Josh' days if he was still in contact with Brian Peck.
'You just looked at me like, 'No. Brian's a really bad guy,' and I remember thinking, 'Gotcha,' ' Peck said.
Later in the podcast, Bell recalled Brian Peck's trial and that the courtroom 'was full of people who I thought were my friends.' He said he also questioned at the time whether he was at fault.
'Drake & Josh' marks a complicated moment in time for Bell, but he doesn't want to discourage fans from enjoying the series, which aired on Nickelodeon from 2004 to 2007. 'That was where I was actually comfortable and happy and stoked,' he said, 'and I'm very proud of what we did.'
Bell and Peck are will continue their conversation in another episode.
'I reached out to Drake privately, but wanted to give my support for the survivors who were brave enough to share their stories of emotional and physical abuse on Nickelodeon sets with this world,' Peck said in March 2024 after the doc aired.
'Children should be protected,' Peck added at the time. 'Reliving this publicly is incredibly difficult, but I hope it can bring healing for the victims and their families as well as necessary change to our industry.'
After appearing on 'Quiet on Set,' which primarily focused on producer Dan Schneider's controversial Nickelodeon reign, Bell said last year he wanted to tell his own story.
'I could've either allowed this to destroy me or make me stronger for him,' Bell said of his son with ex-wife Janet Von Schmeling.

‘I got used to failing': Erin Foster on her Emmy breakthrough and the ‘Nobody Wants This' kiss that broke the internet

For Erin Foster, success didn't come easy. Before creating Netflix's Emmy-nominated Nobody Wants This, she had racked up more than a decade of rejections in Hollywood. At the Televerse Festival FYC panel for the hit series, Foster was candid about how many projects she'd attempted before one finally broke through.'It's like my 14th project,' she said. 'I got really used to failing and really used to something being special to me, but not special to anybody else. You don't know when you're so close to it if it's going to resonate. And I just got very lucky with this cast.'Those years of setbacks made Foster doubt whether her unconventional vision could translate. Nobody Wants This is built on small, hyper-real moments — conversations that feel more like lived experience than scripted comedy. 'In the past, I've had feedback like, 'It feels like a play,' or, 'Not enough is happening,'' Foster explained. 'There aren't big comedic moments. I don't write traditional jokes. So sometimes I thought maybe it would just be too small. The irony is it ended up being so big.'That clear but risky approach attracted Kristen Bell, who earned her first Emmy nomination for playing Joanne. Bell recalled being both intrigued and nervous when she first read Foster's script. 'Erin had such a creative vision that hadn't really been done before — slower and more hyper-realistic,' she said. 'I didn't trust myself at first. I'd keep asking her, 'Did I do that right? Is there enough here to make someone stay on this channel?' And she'd say, 'Calm down, it's enough. Trust me.' And she was right.'That trust led to one of television's most talked-about scenes of the year: Joanne and Noah's kiss at the end of the second episode. What Foster described in the script as 'the best kiss in the history of the world' turned into a viral moment. 'Max pressure,' Bell admitted, laughing. 'We were so nervous to get it right. Adam [Brody] is such a present actor — you can throw anything at him and it feels real. We talked a lot about how to choreograph it. Everything fun to watch is anticipatory, so we wanted to stretch it out as much as possible. His hand came up slowly, then mine followed. Comfort can be incredibly passionate, and that's what we wanted the audience to feel.'The kiss landed so powerfully that it even stunned Bell's husband, Dax Shepard. Watching from afar with friends, Shepard sent Bell a voice memo in the middle of the scene. 'They were screaming,' she said. 'He was so excited for these two characters to kiss. That says a lot.' Foster confessed her minimalist stage direction came partly from discomfort. 'I don't know how to write romance novel lingo,' she said. 'So I just wrote, 'Really amazing kiss.' But there was strategy. I didn't want him to initiate — it felt more appropriate that she would. And I wanted it to surprise the audience, like when you're on a date and you think, 'Wow, we're really not going to kiss,' and then it happens.'That moment didn't just click with viewers — it exploded. GIFs of the kiss circulated across social media, fan edits went viral, and the scene became emblematic of the show's slow-burn romantic Foster, the scene's success felt especially rewarding after years of doubt. 'Failing isn't as fun as this,' she said with a grin. 'If this had been my first show, I might have thought I was just going to make hits forever. But because it took me so long, I can really appreciate it. It's very surreal.' Eddie Murphy Recalls 'Clairvoyant' Girlfriend Who Predicted He'd Become Famous

Eddie Murphy says his teenage girlfriend accurately foresaw that he'd become famous. During his recent interview on Complex's 360 With Speedy, The Pickup star recalled believing that he'd be famous when he was 13 years old. But it wasn't just from Murphy's own admission: He said his then-girlfriend, Sherry Bell, was a "clairvoyant" who knew he'd become a star. "She could really, like, read stuff. She could like put her hands on stuff and see stuff with her hands," Murphy told Speedy Morman around the 1-minute mark of the video above. "She could put her hand in the newspaper and tell you the stuff in the paper," he continued. "And you could put money in her hands, she could tell you what the bill was. She could put her hand in the photo album and tell you who was on the picture." COMPLEX SHOP: Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Uncover what's next. Buy. Collect. Obsess. The actor-comedian said Bell's predication about his career arose when he was 13 or 14 years old. "She told me, 'You're going to be famous,'" Murphy said. "I was like, 'Yeah, I knew it, I knew it.'" Murphy called Bell the first person who "really solidified" that he'd make his mark in Hollywood, adding that she had a "neurological problem" that caused her to be "bedridden" throughout her 20s. "She passed away when I was doing [1996 comedy] Nutty Professor," Murphy said. "And I took care of her all the way from high school all the way up to those years when she was bedridden." Murphy, who was married to his then-wife Nicole Murphy at the time, said a strange occurrence during filming seemed to indicate that Bell had passed away. "We're shooting one big scene and all the lights go out. And the whole set is all black. All the power left," he said. "We go back to the trailer. Then on the way to the trailer, somebody came and told me, 'Hey, Sherry Bell passed away.' Lights out." Murphy's sit-down with Speedy marks the first time he's publicly talked about Bell.
