Hippo birthday! Thailand's Moo Deng turns one
BANGKOK : Thailand's pygmy hippo Moo Deng marks her first birthday today, leaving behind the animal infancy that boosted her to worldwide internet fame for her cute antics.
Crowds have been invited to a four-day festival at Khao Kheow Open Zoo where Moo Deng – which means 'Bouncy Pork' in Thai – frolicked to stardom and amassed five million social media fans.
The first day of the extravaganza falls on a Thai public holiday and the agenda includes a lecture on 'Moo Deng's cheekiness', while a skincare beautician has paid US$3,000 (RM12,760) to sponsor her fruit-festooned cake.
Her handlers are also scheduled to auction off her belongings – but it is unclear what possessions Moo Deng has accumulated in her short life at the Chonburi province zoo, a two-hour drive from Bangkok.
There were hopes her stardom would spotlight the plight of the endangered pygmy hippo, native to West Africa with only around 2,500 left alive according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
But social media and search engine metrics suggest Moo Deng's popularity peaked around late September last year before dramatically declining.
'Moo Deng went viral very quickly when she was born,' said Joshua Paul Dale, an academic who teaches courses on the phenomenon of 'cuteness' at Japan's Chuo University.
'Maybe part of our appreciation of cuteness is knowing that it's something that doesn't last very long,' he told AFP.
Moo Deng's blubbery rose-blushed face launched a thousand memes and a plethora of merchandise including piggy banks, party shirts and popsicles – prompting her owners to trademark her likeness.
The pint-sized pachyderm quadrupled ticket sales for the zoo where her small and sparse enclosure was once broadcasted by a 24/7 livestream.
Moo Deng is part of a pantheon of captive animals who have enjoyed flash-in-the-pan popularity for their cuteness online, including Australia's Pesto the penguin and China's Hua Hua the panda.
Pygmy hippos have a lifespan of between 30 and 50 years.
While Dale predicts she may lose the limelight to longevity, he says Moo Deng could enjoy enduring appeal as fans recall 'how unbearably cute she was when she was very, very small and just born'.
'That can kind of continue on and affect our relationship with cute things, even when they grow up,' he said.

Actor-singer lodges police report over ‘defamatory' social media post
Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the actor-singer filed a report on July 18. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A popular actor and singer has lodged a police report over an allegedly defamatory and provocative post uploaded on the social media platform Threads. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report was filed at 4.12pm on July 18, Harian Metro reported. He said the male artiste was unhappy with a post by a Threads user, claiming it contained defamatory, provocative and seditious elements that were widely circulated online. 'The complainant believes the post could harm his reputation and public image,' Usuf was quoted as saying. Police are investigating the case under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities. Usuf also clarified that the case has no connection to singer Shila Amzah, who recently claimed that she was attacked by a senior artiste during a concert rehearsal.

No, that's not Keanu Reeves asking for money — but his AI doppelganger is — and he's had enough
LOS ANGELES, July 19 — Keanu Reeves may not be on social media, but that hasn't stopped scammers from turning him into one of the most impersonated celebrities online. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Matrix and John Wick star is paying thousands of dollars a month to a Seattle-based company, Loti AI, to track and remove fake accounts pretending to be him across platforms like TikTok, Facebook and Instagram. With his blessing, the company's founder Luke Arrigoni revealed they've issued nearly 40,000 takedown requests on Reeves' behalf over the past year. 'He cares very much about how his fans are treated, and he's very invested in trying to solve this problem,' Arrigoni reportedly said. A reporter for The Hollywood Reporter went undercover to investigate one of the scams. While the real Reeves was walking the red carpet with girlfriend Alexandra Grant at the John Wick spinoff Ballerina premiere, a fake account named Keanu_Reeves68667 tried to coax the journalist into paying US$600 (RM2,547) for a bogus 'VIP' fan club membership, promising an in-person meet-up. The actor's widespread appeal — and his almost mythical off-grid persona — have made him an easy target for online manipulation. 'Pretty much everybody everywhere on Earth likes [him],' the reporter noted, adding that his lack of personal social media makes it harder for fans to distinguish real from fake. Scammers have used Reeves' likeness for everything from romance grifts to political messages. In one fake image, he appears to endorse Donald Trump. In another, he seems to support awareness campaigns for indigenous children who were victims of abusive boarding schools in Canada. Most of these images are photoshopped from a Getty photo of Reeves at a motorcycle event in Italy in 2017. Loti AI typically gets platforms to remove fake accounts within 48 hours, but that's often enough time for fraudsters to inflict serious harm. As The Hollywood Reporter highlighted, the FBI reported nearly US$672 million in losses from romance and confidence scams in 2024 — with older adults particularly vulnerable. One case involved a 73-year-old woman who lost nearly US$100,000 to a scammer pretending to be Kevin Costner. She was convinced to send bitcoin deposits for a fake film project, lured in by messages offering companionship during a difficult time. At one point, the fake Costner even sent a photo holding a handwritten sign that read: 'It's really me Kevin Costner. I love you so much… I can't wait to meet you.' For his part, Reeves is doing what he can to protect others from similar heartbreak — even if it means fighting an invisible, AI-fuelled army one fake account at a time.
