New Delhi: Leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday (May 23) said that India's foreign policy had 'collapsed' after he shared a clip of external affairs minister S. Jaishankar's interview to Dutch broadcaster NOS and asked him to explain why India has been hyphenated with Pakistan, why no other country backed India in condemning Pakistan and who asked US President Donald Trump to 'mediate' a ceasefire.
In a statement on X, Gandhi shared a clip of the interview where Jaishankar was being asked to respond to Trump's claims of having 'mediated' the ceasefire between India and Pakistan announced on May 10, after four days of tense military conflict following Operation Sindoor.
Since then, India has maintained that the cessation of hostilities between the two countries was decided 'bilaterally' without making any direct references to Trump's continued claims which have since included bringing back the two countries from brink of nuclear war and using trade as leverage to broker the ceasefire.
'Will JJ explain: Why has India been hyphenated with Pakistan? Why didn't a single country back us in condemning Pakistan? Who asked Trump to 'mediate' between India & Pakistan? India's foreign policy has collapsed,' said Gandhi.
While Gandhi did not elaborate on what 'JJ' stands for, Congress leaders have been referring to Jaishankar as 'Jaichand Jaishankar' in a seeming reference to the poem 'Prithviraj Raso' in which Jaichand, a Rajput ruler, is said to be allied with Muhammad Ghori against another Rajput ruler, Prithviraj Chauhan.
Gandhi's questions to Jaishankar come a day after he posed a series of questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X. Gandhi shared a clip of Modi's address to the nation on May 12 and wrote:
'Modiji, stop giving hollow speeches. Just tell me: Why did you believe Pakistan's statement on terrorism? 2. Why did you sacrifice India's interests by bowing to Trump? 3. Why does your blood boil only in front of cameras? You have compromised the honour of India!'
Earlier on May 17, Gandhi had said Jaishankar's silence was 'damning'. He had asked, 'How many Indian aircraft did we lose because Pakistan knew? This wasn't a lapse. It was a crime. And the nation deserves the truth.'
Gandhi had also shared a video in which Jaishankar was telling reporters that 'at the start' of Operation Sindoor, a message was sent to Pakistan.
'At the start of the operation, we have sent a message to Pakistan saying we are striking at infrastructure and we are not striking at the military, so military has the option of standing out and not interfering in this process. They chose not to take good advice,' Jaishankar is heard saying in the video.
Meanwhile, on Friday, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia hit out at Gandhi while addressing a press conference in Delhi and called his statements damaging to the morale of the armed forces.

On May 11, during a press briefing, Air Marshal Bharti said, 'We are in a combat scenario, it is not prudent for us to answer that question' Rahul Gandhi seems to be busy in conversations with Pakistan on how to weaken India and the morale of the forces. He does not take this into account and asks how many jets have been lost,' said Bhatia.
'Today, a senior leader of Pakistan, Mariam Nawaz, gave a statement that on the night of May 6 and 7, and on May 9, Pakistan had to face a huge loss because of India's action. Pakistan is itself accepting that our armed forces destroyed nine terrorist pads and 11 air bases. At such a time, what is leader of opposition and 'Nishan E Pakistan' Rahul Gandhi saying?' he asked.
He added that Gandhi must decide which side he wants to be on: 'The whole country is asking Rahul Gandhi, that you may disagree with the Prime Minister which is permitted in a democracy. But using derogatory statements against him, and your statements and Congress' statements being used to defame India by Pakistan is worrisome. Rahul Gandhi must decide which side he is on. Are you the Indian leader of opposition or Pakistan's Nishan-e-Pakistan?'

'Baseless': EC insiders dismiss Rahul's claim on Maharashtra poll rigging
New Delhi: The political storm stirred by Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over alleged irregularities in Maharashtra electoral rolls was dismissed as 'baseless' by an Election Commission source on Saturday. 'The Maharashtra electoral roll revision process was undertaken under the full glare of 1,03,727 Booth Level Agents appointed by the political parties, including 27,099 BLAs by the Indian National Congress (INC) themselves,' said an official source, claiming that there was no basis for the Congress leader to insinuate vitiation of the electoral process. According to the Election Commission's elaborate procedure on the updating of electoral rolls, any deletion and addition is done strictly as per the given framework under Article 324 of the Constitution and the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Registration of the Electors Rules, 1960 and the extant instructions issued by the Commission from time to time Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in an article published in a national daily, alleged "match-fixing" by the BJP in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. His article ignited a political controversy, with opposition parties claiming that it exposes the alleged scale of electoral manipulation in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections and points to the Election Commission's "silence" on critical questions raised by the opposition alliance. Election Commission sources, however, disagreed with Rahul Gandhi's claim and questioned why no appeals were filed in case the allegations about manipulation carried any weight. After the finalisation of these electoral rolls during the Maharashtra elections, out of 9,77,90,752 electors, only 89 appeals were filed before the first appellate authority (District Magistrate) under Section 24(A) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, said a source. Only one appeal was preferred before the second appellate authority (Chief Electoral Officer) under Section 24(B) of the same Act, he said. To counter Rahul Gandhi's attack on alleged election rigging, BJP leader Amit Malviya on Saturday posted on social media a news clip headlined: 'Misleading', 'baseless', says EC, rejects Congress' claims on Maharashtra voter lists. The EC said there was no irregular pattern in voter deletions in the state and rule-based process was followed with transparency in preparation of the electoral rolls, according to the clip.

Congress' head of media and publicity department, Pawan Khera, said instead of strong action against Pakistan, China armed it with fifth-generation jets and missiles and the World Bank and the ADB gave more aid to the neighbouring country. He claimed that the UN Security Council also named Pakistan Vice-Chair of the Anti-Terrorism Committee, just days after the terror attack on Indian soil. "After the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam, we expected strong actions and global isolation of Pakistan, but what has actually happened? "China is arming Pakistan with 40 fifth-generation stealth J-35A fighter jets armed with cutting-edge PL-17 missiles. Azerbaijan is investing $2 billion in purchasing 40 Pakistani JF-17 fighter jets," Khera said. "The World Bank has pledged $40 billion for Pakistan's development. The IMF approved $1 billion bailout to Pakistan. Russia has signed a $2.6 billion agreement to rebuild a steel plant in Karachi," he said in a post on X. During a community event with the Indian diaspora in Berlin, Prasad highlighted India's remarkable progress in IT, space, and digital transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, contrasting it with Pakistan's repeated failures in wars while referring to the repeated incidents of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and the military's dominant role in the country's politics. "India and Pakistan were born the same day. Where are we in India, and where are they (Pakistan)? India has become a major global IT power in the world. India has become an emerging space power in the world. The startup movements here are now globally recognised. India has also become the second biggest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. We have brought digital transformation with equity and justice," Prasad said. "What Pakistan is doing is creating terror machines. How to create world-class terrorists under their (military) Generals. They attacked us four times and lost every time. We never attacked; they were the ones who always started the war. It is because they are under the control of Generals and not political leaders. Generals want conflict to keep themselves relevant, and terrorists are the instruments through which they execute. Prasad also spoke about the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and India's decisive response through Operation Sindoor on May 7, noting that Operation Sindoor remains paused but ready to resume based on Pakistan's actions. "Pahalgam attack happened on April 22. We attacked on May 7 and hit the terrorist camps. If Pakistan has to talk, it must directly speak to us. Our message was stern and straight: If you stop, we stop. If you fire, we will give a stronger reply. Operation Sindoor is on pause, subject to the good behaviour of Pakistan. It has not ended," he stated. The delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, includes BJP MPs Daggubati Purandeswari and Samik Bhattacharya, Congress MP Amar Singh and Gulam Ali Khatana, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, AIADMK MP M Thambidurai, former Union Minister MJ Akbar and former diplomat Pankaj Saran. The delegation arrived in Germany after concluding their visit to Belgium to convey India's resolute and united stand against terrorism.
