A mother killed three of her young daughters. Her devastated husband blames PTSD: She ‘loved those kids'

Independent14-02-2025

A Wyoming mother killed her three young daughters in the family home before turning the gun on herself in a horrifying case that has left her devastated husband reeling.
Cliff Harshman said he is struggling to comprehend the actions of his wife, Tranyelle Harshman, who he said was battling mental illness.
'This was something beyond what I can comprehend,' Cliff told KTVQ. 'I'm a mess … I don't even know how to explain this to you. I'm so angry with her for the decision that was made.'
'People don't understand how mental illness isn't just a willpower thing,' he continued. 'It's chemical imbalances in your brain. It's damaged pathways in your brain. She was an incredible mom and she loved those kids.'
He is grieving the loss of his 2-year-old twin daughters Brooke and Jordan, and his 9-year-old step-daughter Brailey.
Harshman's other step-daughter Olivia, 7, survived, but suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and is currently fighting for her life in a local hospital, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family.
Tranyelle, 32, was at home with her four daughters on Monday, February 10, in the small town of Byron, Big Horn County. The girls were at home because they had been suffering from the flu, Cliff told the Cowboy State Daily. He was working out of state at the time.
Harshman told the State Daily that his wife was undergoing treatment for her mental health issues, and explained that she was dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder and post-partum depression.
'My wife was not a monster,' he said. 'This is so out of character. It's unbelievable what had happened. We'd been getting her help, and along the way something didn't work. As angry as I may be with her, I still love her – and I lost her as well.'
The Big Horn County Sheriff Office's shared the harrowing details of what unfolded in a media release.
The events immediately leading up to the killings are unknown, but after Tranyelle shot her daughters, she called 911.
Police said that Tranyelle told the call dispatcher where they could locate the bodies of the children. 'She told the dispatcher two children would be located upstairs in their cribs and two children would be downstairs in their shared bedroom,' Big Horn County Sheriff Ken Blackburn said in the media release.
'The caller further stated she could be found in her upstairs bedroom and that she was going to do the same to herself,' Blackburn continued.
The dispatcher pleaded with Tranyelle to remain on the line until emergency services arrived at the scene, but the mom said it was 'too late.'
First responders found her still alive when they arrived at the house, but she later died from her injuries in a local hospital.
Little Olivia was airlifted to a hospital where she remains in critical condition.
Olivia's biological father, Quinn Blackmer, has been keeping vigil by her bedside while grieving the loss of his other daughter, Brailey.
'I'm furious. I'm trying my hardest to bury that for a while and to focus on the now, because that anger isn't going to bring my child back,' he told KTVQ.
The two fathers have been leaning on one another for support.

Teenage girl is killed in horror 4WD crash after camping trip with mates goes horribly wrong in long weekend tragedy

A teenage girl has died after a horrific 4WD accident while camping with friends over the long weekend. Caitlyn Bragger, 15, was in a Toyota LandCruiser with five other teens when it crashed near campgrounds at Lake Brockman, south of Perth, 8pm on Saturday. Western Australia Police said the teenagers had been camping in the area while a 16-year-old boy was behind the wheel at the time. Caitlyn died of her injuries at the scene. A 17-year-old boy and the driver were raced to Bunbury Regional Hospital. An 18-year-old boy and two 16-year-old girls also suffered minor injuries. Other nearby campers said they had seen the car's headlights moving through the trees before the crash. They then heard a 'loud bang' and a 'woman screaming'. Caitlyn's family said they were 'broken and in pieces' after losing their 'beautiful girl'. A GoFundMe has since been launched to help the family during their time of need. 'She bought a ray of sunshine everywhere she went, [she was] so outgoing and never left a dull moment in life,' the fundraiser read. 'Known for her kindness, unique sense of humour, and devotion to her family and friends. 'Her family are now left broken and in pieces, lost and confused. No one ever expects something like this to happen, you can't prepare yourself. 'Forever 15, forever in our memory and hearts. Our Angel In Heaven.' Some $9,000 had been raised for the family by Tuesday. Caitlyn's aunt Danica Pierce said her heart was 'seriously struggling to take all this pain'. 'You are going to be so missed, now an angel in heaven but way too young, my heart breaks,' she said. Witnesses at Lake Brockman said the LandCruiser had been crumpled in the crash. One of the boys who rushed to the group's aid, Jett, said it was a confronting sight. 'When I walked up there, there was a massive four-wheel-drive that had been smashed like a tin can, it was scary to see,' he told the ABC. 'There (were) so many people running towards the car and trying to help but there's only so much you can do in that situation.' His friend Rocquo said he managed to pull a rear door from the car to free a male passenger, but felt helpless after seeing the car's roof caved in at its front end. 'It was a shock because you feel hopeless because you can't do anything and we were trying to pick the roof up and we were trying to get everyone out but you can't do anything and it's just sad,' he said. Major Crash investigators continued to examine the scene with WA Police on Monday. Officers appealed for anybody with dash-cam footage of the incident to come forward. In Western Australia, drivers cannot obtain a provisional driving permit until they are 17 years of age.

Cops release new images of man wanted for 'murdering his daughters'

Washington State police released new images of the man accused of murdering his three daughters as the search for the former soldier continues. Travis Decker, 32, is wanted for the alleged murder of his children Paityn, nine, Evelyn, eight, and Olivia, five. Authorities started searching for his daughters after they failed to return home from a scheduled visit with him on May 30. On Monday, the children's bodies were found at a campsite in Leavenworth, around 20 miles from their home. Their wrists had been bound with zip ties and each of them had been suffocated with a plastic bag. A manhunt is underway for Decker and the Chelan County Sheriff's Office released new images of the dad on Saturday. An updated wanted poster showed Decker wearing a tan shirt with the number 59 on the sleeve, dark shorts, and flip flops. His hair was tied back and he carried pizza boxes. The poster also included close up photos of Decker's tattoos on his arms and ankle, and stated that Decker was 'last seen wearing tan or green t-shirt, dark shorts'. 'Updated photos of murder suspect Travis Decker, who is considered dangerous and may be armed. Do not approach, call 911 immediately,' the poster stated. The Chelan County Sheriff's Office announced they would be removing road blocks and reopening roads after hundreds of law enforcement personnel search dozes of structures and the forest. 'However, we ask the public to remain vigilant at they venture back out to the recreation areas of Chelan County,' the sheriff's office said. 'We ask that the public help continue to help us in this search. Please review your doorbell cameras and security cameras for signs of Mr Decker. 'If you are out in the woods, or recreation areas, and come across something you believe would be beneficial for law enforcement, note the time and location and mark the location on your electronic devices if possible.' After finding the girls, investigators 'obtained and served multiple search warrants for records contained in Decker's Google accounts,' leading them to discover that he ppeared to be planning how to relocate to Canada, according to an affidavit reviewed by the Independent. In the affidavit, Deputy U.S. Marshal Keegan Stanley wrote that Decker made several searches on May 26, including: 'how does a person move to Canada,' 'how to relocate to Canada' and 'jobs Canada'. The father, who remains on the run, then visited the website 'Find a job - Stanley detailed. His daughters' remains were also found 'relatively close to the Canadian border and approximately 11 miles from the Pacific Crest Trail, a well-established trail that leads directly to Canada,' per the affidavit. Decker, who is wanted on three counts each of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, also 'has training in navigation, woodland/mountainous terrain, long distance movements, survival and numerous other disciplines needed to be able to flee,' the affidavit continued. 'Prior to the above alleged crimes, Decker frequently recreated in outdoor, woodland and mountainous areas throughout the Eastern District of Washington and surrounding states,' it read. 'Amongst other outdoorsman activities, Decker frequently engaged in hiking, camping, survival skill practice, hunting and even lived off the grid in the backwoods for approximately 2.5 months on one occasion.' He is considered very dangerous given his extensive military training and propensity for violence.

Greg Monks' family say they believe he 'got lost' in Portugal

Greg Monks was reported missing after leaving the main strip in Albufeira in the Algarve region during the early hours of May 28. The 38-year-old had arrived in the resort town the day before for a stag do. The last official sighting of Greg was at around 3.27am on May 28 as he walked past a property in Cerro de Aguia. According to Google Maps, this area is around an hour and 20 minutes walk from the main strip. Police launched a major search to trace Greg, but on June 4, officers confirmed the body of a man, a 38-year-old British citizen, had been discovered on vacant land in Cerro de Aguia. Greg's mum, girlfriend, and cousin – who had flown out to join the search - will return to Scotland today (June 9) without him, with the repatriation process 'set to take days', the Daily Record reports. Jillian Monks, Greg's sister, stated that the family 'will never truly know the full story' but that they believe he 'got lost'. READ NEXT: £25k raised to bring Greg Monks home from Portugal She said: 'We don't believe that anything untoward happened. Everything the police have told us adds up. 'We'll never truly know the full story. But we believe he just got lost and ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time. 'It brings us some comfort knowing that Greg had all his belongings on him. He wasn't robbed, he still had his phone and his wallet. 'He had all his cards and cash.' We previously reported that a GoFundMe page was initially launched to support the search but had instead been updated to help the family bring Greg home and to plan his funeral. It has so far raised £34,000. Ms Monks highlighted that the family now 'has some sense of closure' as they plan to bring her beloved brother home this weekend. READ NEXT: Family pay tribute to Cole Cooper as body found in search She added: 'The generosity and support have been incredible. We're hoping to bring Greg home by the weekend. His mum, girlfriend, and cousin are going to fly home tonight. 'They wanted to fly back with him, but it has just not been possible. It has been the toughest time of our lives. 'We still can't believe this has happened, but we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother. 'I think it just shows in places like Albufeira, everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. 'His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened. Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home. 'That's the kind of person he was.' Ms Monks further shared her family's anger over how they discovered Greg had died. She commented: 'I knew Greg had been found before my mum and dad were told officially by police in Portugal. 'They were waiting in a police station to meet with officers when their phones went off with notifications to say Greg had been found. 'It is shocking that this was allowed to happen.'
