BBC News4 hours ago

British number one Emma Raducanu and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz are one of several eye-catching pairings planning to play the new-look US Open mixed doubles event.Fellow Briton Jack Draper is set to feature alongside Chinese world number four Zheng Qinwen, with a host of big names - including Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner and Naomi Osaka - also on the entry list. The US Open mixed doubles will be held as a standalone event on 19-20 August before the hard-court Grand Slam begins on 24 August.Bringing the mixed doubles forward is a bold and revolutionary move by the United States Tennis Association, which said it hoped would attract more high-profile singles players. The 16 pairings announced by the USTA on Tuesday are not guaranteed to play in the event, although it is an indication the players involved are keen on participating. The entry deadline, by which players must confirm if they will play, is 28 July.
Who's on the entry list?
Sixteen teams have entered the US Open mixed doubles, which will operate as best-of-three-set matches with sets to four games in the earlier rounds. The final will be a best-of-three-set match to six games, also featuring no-ad scoring and a 10-point match tie-break in lieu of a third set. When the entry window closes, the top eight teams with the best combined singles ranking will be directly accepted into the draw. The remaining eight teams will be determined by wildcards. The initial entry list features:Emma Navarro (US) and Jannik Sinner (Ita)Zheng Qinwen (Chn) and Jack Draper (GB)Jessica Pegula (US) and Tommy Paul (US)Jasmine Paolini (Ita) and Lorenzo Musetti (Ita)Elena Rybakina (Kaz) and Taylor Fritz (US)Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev Madison Keys (US) and Frances Tiafoe (US)Aryna Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov (Bul)Iga Swiatek (Pol) and Casper Ruud (Nor)Paula Badosa (Spa) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (Gre)Emma Raducanu (GB) and Carlos Alcaraz (Spa)Belinda Bencic (Sui) and Alexander Zverev (Ger)Olga Danilovic (Srb) and Novak Djokovic (Srb)Taylor Townsend (US) and Ben Shelton (US)Sara Errani (Ita) and Andrea Vavassori (Ita)Naomi Osaka (Jpn) and Nick Kyrgios (Aus)
What's the reaction been?
The eye-catching entry list was announced by the USTA on Tuesday.Lew Sherr, the USTA's chief executive, said the tournament was always "confident" of getting the world's leading players involved."Seeing the teams that have already put their names on the entry list makes us all incredibly excited," he said."It shows that the players are behind what we are trying to do, and we know that the fans will love it."The plan received strong criticism from some doubles players when it was announced in February.Italian pair Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who won last year's US Open mixed doubles title, are on the entry list, having initially described the decision as a "profound injustice".France's Kristina Mladenovic, winner of multiple Slam doubles titles, said the decision was "terribly shocking".

Travis Kelce completes mad dash from Cannes to Kansas City for first day of Chiefs minicamp

The distance from Cannes to Kansas City encompasses eight time zones and nearly 8,000 miles, neither of which was enough to keep Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce from the opening of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. The 35-year-old NFL superstar and his brother Jason were among the invited guests at the Amazon Port Panel in Cannes, where the Kelces dutifully promoted their highly successful podcast, New Heights. Less than 24 hours later, Kelce was back to work at his other job preparing for the upcoming 2025 NFL campaign. Both Kelce and newly re-signed right guard Trey Smith mostly skipped organized team activities last month before making their mandatory appearances on Tuesday. The only absentee in Kansas City was tight end Tre Watson, according to local media. The mandatory minicamp will continue through Thursday. Unlike last year, when he and girlfriend Taylor Swift couldn't stay out of the spotlight, Travis has enjoyed a much quieter break from NFL duties this time around, with the couple keen to unwind together away from the cameras in recent months. Welcome back Travis Kelce! Picking up right where he left off. The boys are back! #ChiefsKingdom — Taylor Burr (@TaylorBurr10) June 17, 2025 He will be desperate to enter the 2025 season in optimum shape after putting up some of the worst individual numbers of his career in 2024, which led many to believe his career was coming to an end. However, after admitting he was weighing up his future, the Chiefs icon confirmed to Pat McAfee at the end of February that he is not hanging up his cleats just yet. Kelce recently explained his reasoning to Jason on New Heights: 'I think the biggest thing is that I f***ing love playing the game of football. I still feel I can play at a high level and possibly at a higher level than I did last year. 'I don't think it was my best outing. I think I let my guys down in a lot more moments than I helped them, especially if you look at my track record and how I've been in years past. 'I want to give it a good run. I've got a bad taste in my mouth on how I ended the year and how well I was playing and how accountable I was for the people around me. I love so many people in Kansas City, both in that facility and the community and it's home for me now. 'I don't want to leave that life yet. I put in a lot of hard work and focus into being the best I can be for Kansas City and last year it didn't end well for us. I feel there's a responsibility in me to play out the contract I initially signed to give the organization everything that I've got and that's what I'm going to do man.' Of course, when he does hang up his cleats, Kelce can always just focus on podcasting. As he and Jason explained in Cannes, the idea behind New Heights was to give their audience a window into their family dynamic. 'I think we've always wanted to show everybody our brotherhood, our family, how we're in this crazy football world together supporting each other from different sides of the country. 'It was an opportunity to honestly spend more time together,' Travis said. Jason then admitted: 'we would go months in the season without really talking to each other.'

Sinner through in Halle to set up clash with former champion Bublik

June 17 (Reuters) - Top seed Jannik Sinner beat local hope Yannick Hanfmann 7-5 6-3 to move into the last 16 at the Halle Open on Tuesday as the world number one looks to defend the only grasscourt title he has won in his career. In his first match since the epic Roland Garros final where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a contest that lasted 5-1/2 hours, Sinner returned to winning ways as he got the better of Hanfmann who is ranked 138 in the world. "I'm very happy. He is a great server and a great baseliner, so breaking him is very difficult on this surface," Sinner said. "I'm very happy how I handled the tough situations mentally. The first set could have gone into a tiebreak and then anything can happen. "First matches are never easy on grass, and also second and third matches. So let's see what's coming in the next round. I think tomorrow I have the day off, which is good, because the body feels different on this surface." Sinner will next face Alexander Bublik, who won the tournament in 2023 and also faced the Italian in the French Open quarter-finals, and the top seed said he can only expect "the unexpected" against the unpredictable Kazakh entertainer. "He's a great player, a great talent. A huge talent, actually, and grass is his favourite surface. He beat me here in Halle, he won (the trophy) here in Halle, so it's for sure a place he loves to play," Sinner added. "I'm trying to stay calm mentally and trying to see what I can reach. He's a great talent, a great server and he can do whatever he wants. It's hopefully going to be a good match." Earlier, Russian fourth seed Andrey Rublev beat Sebastian Ofner 6-3 6-4 to advance but other top seeds Ugo Humbert and Francisco Cerundolo fell. Denis Shapovalov knocked out sixth seed Humbert 6-4 4-6 7-6(4) while American Alex Michelsen beat fifth seed Cerundolo 2-6 7-5 6-4. Shapovalov's Canadian compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime also advanced but not before he was taken the distance by Laslo Djere in a 6-3 6-7(6) 6-1 victory.

Joe Torre joins AL coaching staff for All-Star Game

June 17 - Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre, who guided the New York Yankees to four World Series rings, will be an honorary coach for the American League at the All-Star Game on July 15 in Atlanta, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday. Torre, who turns 85 on July 18, will join current Yankees skipper Aaron Boone's AL staff along with Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. The National League All-Stars are managed by Dave Roberts of the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and his staff. Honorary coaches for the NL are Brian Snitker, manager of the host Atlanta Braves, and Miami Marlins first-year skipper Clayton McCullough, who spent the previous four seasons as the Dodgers' first base coach. Torre, who works for MLB as a special assistant to the commissioner, managed 29 seasons and ranks fifth all-time with 2,326 wins. A two-time AL Manager of the Year, Torre was at the helm for the New York Mets (1977-81), Braves (1982-84), St. Louis Cardinals (1990-95), Yankees (1996-2007) and Dodgers (2008-10). He was voted into the Hall of Fame as a manager in 2014 by the Expansion Era Committee. As a player, he suited up for the Braves in both Milwaukee (1960-65) and Atlanta (1966-68), including five straight All-Star selections from 1963-67. Vogt, who played for the Braves in 2021, was voted the AL Manager of the Year in 2024 after leading the Guardians to the Central Division crown and the American League Championship Series in his first year. --Field Level Media
