Pakistan's most advanced road completed in Lahore, produces electricity
Authorities in Lahore have completed construction of what they describe as the country's most advanced urban road, located in central Lahore, officials said on Monday.
Known as Route 47, the 4.5-kilometre thoroughfare runs through Kalma Chowk and links several major arteries of the city, including Ferozepur Road, Gulberg Main Boulevard, Walton Road and the Lahore Ring Road.
The project, which cost an estimated Rs9 billion (around USD 32 million), was carried out by the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (CBD Punjab).
'This road is the central boulevard of the country's most modern commercial district,' said CBD Punjab CEO Imran Amin. 'It meets international standards and incorporates several smart features.'
The road includes a nearly one-kilometre flyover and is equipped with separate pedestrian and bicycle lanes. Officials said it was designed to prevent water accumulation during rainfall, a frequent issue in Lahore's monsoon season.
Sidewalks along Route 47 are being fitted with solar panels, which will provide shade and generate up to one megawatt of electricity. 'I believe this is Pakistan's first smart road that will also produce energy,' Amin said.
The route runs through what was once Walton Airport, a 300-acre site now being redeveloped into a high-rise commercial zone. The area is being positioned as Lahore's Central Business District, part of a wider push towards vertical urban development.
Officials said infrastructure work in the district is now largely complete, including new sewage systems, stormwater management, and the construction of two parking plazas. Rainwater from the area will be channelled through underground systems and directed to an artificial lake, which is also nearing completion.
The government plans to promote the CBD as a hub for both business and information technology in the coming years.

China's yuan holds firm as traders await US-China talks
HONG KONG: China's yuan hovered around its strongest level against the US dollar in nearly two weeks on Thursday, buoyed by persistent weakness in the greenback as markets awaited further clarity on trade negotiations and potential tariff developments. The yuan eased 0.1% after touching 7.1720, its strongest since May 26. Its offshore counterpart was also down about 0.1% in Asian trade. Investors were cautious after US President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping was tough and 'extremely hard to make a deal with'. Markets are now awaiting the results of a phone call between the two leaders this week and any further insights into potential tariff developments. Prior to the market opening, the People's Bank of China set the midpoint rate at 7.1865 per dollar, 103 pips weaker than a Reuters estimate, signalling the central bank's intent to maintain stability in the yuan and temper rapid appreciation. The spot yuan is allowed to trade 2% either side of the fixed midpoint each day. Yuan falls to 2007 lows as US tariffs on China kick in Based on Thursday's official guidance, the yuan is allowed to drop as far as 7.3302. The currency is up 0.3% against the dollar this month and 1.6% firmer this year as broad weakness in the US dollar adds to the strengthening trend. 'Looking beyond near-term tariff headlines, we think the CNY may now be commencing a multi-year strengthening path against the USD,' analysts at Goldman Sachs wrote in a note. Elsewhere, the Hong Kong dollar remained near the weak end of a band around 7.85 to the dollar. The overnight interbank offered rate rebounded to 0.01949% from a record low in the biggest single-day increase since 2023, while interbank rates for one-month and three-month continued to hover near three-year lows. The dollar's six-currency index was stuck near a six-week low, after data showed that the US services sector had contracted for the first time in nearly a year, reigniting concerns about sluggish growth and persistent inflation.

Commerce minister says committed to boosting pharma exports
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan reaffirmed his commitment to boosting pharmaceutical exports, announcing the establishment of an empowered Pharma Export Promotion Council, PharmEx Pakistan, under the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP). 'The pharmaceutical sector has huge export potential, and PharmEx Pakistan is just one or two steps away from becoming operational,' said the minister. He appreciated the industry's rapid progress and assured continued government facilitation to achieve global export targets. On trade with Afghanistan, he stated, 'With every passing day, our relations are growing stronger and more streamlined — pharmaceutical exports will rise accordingly.' The minister's remarks came during a presentation by Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association (PPMA) Chairman Touqeerul Haq, who briefed him on the formation of PharmEx Pakistan, a public-private initiative to promote and manage pharmaceutical exports. Chairman Touqeerul Haq praised the minister's prompt action in addressing critical issues, stating it helped the industry avoid major financial losses. He added that PharmEx Pakistan has the potential to raise pharmaceutical exports from $700 million to $3 billion. The initiative builds on strong sectoral growth, with exports rising from USD 270 million in 2020–21 to $355 million in 2024–25, as noted in the latest industry figures. Touqeerul Haq also called for better facilitation of exports to Afghanistan, a key market, and welcomed the minister's assurance of focused policy coordination. PharmEx Pakistan is expected to serve as a dedicated platform to enhance regulatory compliance, market access, and international outreach for Pakistani pharmaceutical products. The Minister assured the association of the Ministry's commitment to resolve the issues faced by the exporters and announced the establishment of a dedicated Exporter Facilitation Desk in the Ministry to help the export industry with critical matters requiring urgent intervention of the government. Trade worries weigh on Asia FX
BENGALURU: South Korean shares jumped to a 10-month high and the won firmed on Wednesday after liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung won the presidential election, while other regional currencies were tepid as investors awaited developments in trade talks with the US. Lee began his term on Wednesday, just hours after his victory in Tuesday's snap election. He has vowed to bring corporate reform measures to boost the domestic stock market, raise investment in artificial intelligence, and revive an economy reeling from slowing growth. With South Korea's key sectors from chips to autos heavily exposed to global trade, all eyes will also be on Lee's ability to negotiate a favourable trade deal with the US The country's benchmark stock index KOSPI surged 2.5% to its highest level since early August 2024. The won, which is up more than 7% this year, appreciated 0.2% to 1,374.4 per dollar. Analysts at TD Securities said 'better days' are ahead for the won. 'The risk premium from the political turmoil in Dec'24 have capped KRW's gains relative to peers amid the USD sell off this year. We see two wins for KRW on the horizon with an imminent fiscal package and a swift US-South Korea trade deal,' they said in a note. Other regional currencies were either flat or marginally lower against the greenback as the market focus turns to a Wednesday deadline for countries to submit their best proposals for trade deals with the US and thus a chance to avoid Trump's hefty tariffs. A possible call between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping is also in the spotlight this week. Trade tensions between the world's two biggest economies have flared anew since Trump accused China of violating an agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions – claims Beijing has dismissed as 'groundless'.
