Heavy rains batter Bengaluru; yellow alert issued across Karnataka
Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds lashed Bengaluru on Tuesday afternoon and evening, leading to widespread waterlogging, tree falls, and traffic congestion across the city. The downpour brought temporary relief from the heat, with temperatures dipping to 32 degrees Celsius — 1.3 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported 34.2 mm of rain in the city, with 41 mm recorded in the HAL Old Airport area and 33.5 mm in Bengaluru Urban. A yellow alert has been issued for Bengaluru and several other districts in Karnataka, including Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru, Udupi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Bidar, and Uttara Kannada, till Thursday. The IMD forecast also includes strong winds (30–50 kmph) and thundershowers.
Several key areas, particularly in east Bengaluru, were severely affected. Roads in Whitefield, Marathahalli, Hebbal, and Banaswadi were inundated, resulting in major traffic jams during peak hours. Manyata Tech Park was among the worst-hit, with employees sharing visuals of flooded roads on social media.

Meanwhile, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) control room received a high volume of complaints. The civic body's forest wing reported 36 trees uprooted and 121 branches down across the city. A large tree fell on a car in Yelachenahalli, but no injuries were reported. BBMP teams worked to clear debris and desilt roadside drains to ease water flow. Bengaluru Traffic Police assisted in managing congestion in affected areas.
Monsoon in Karnataka
Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast an early onset of the southwest monsoon in Karnataka. 'Normally, it takes four days for the monsoon to travel from Kerala to Karnataka. Hopefully, Karnataka will welcome the monsoon by May-end,' CS Patil, meteorologist, IMD Bengaluru was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
IMD officials said the monsoon is expected to arrive over Kerala by May 27, with an error margin of 3–4 days. Based on current models, Karnataka may receive 20 per cent above-average rainfall this season.
GS Srinivasa Reddy, former director of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, told ToI that the monsoon has already advanced into parts of the South Bay of Bengal, South Andaman Sea, and Nicobar Islands. 'Even if it weakens due to westerlies or other systems, it will be delayed by only 4–5 days and may enter Karnataka by June 1 or 2,' he said.
According to the IMD, India is likely to receive 104 per cent of the average monsoon rainfall, with surplus rain expected in southern Karnataka and satisfactory rain in the northern parts.

Pune likely to witness surge in rainfall activity
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an increase in rainfall activity across Pune and nearby regions between June 5 and June 8. Although the progress of the southwest monsoon over Maharashtra has remained stalled for the past four to five days, weather systems developing over central India are expected to trigger showers across the state. This includes light to moderate rainfall spells in Pune city and its surrounding areas. On Wednesday, June 4, the city witnessed widespread moderate rainfall despite no specific alert being issued by the IMD for the day. Shivajinagar, which serves as the IMD's official rain gauge for the city, recorded 16.7 mm of rain, categorising it as a moderate spell. Several other parts of the city and district also received rainfall. According to SD Sanap, senior meteorologist at IMD Pune, the city can expect an uptick in rainfall over the next few days. 'Moderate to heavy showers may occur in isolated areas, accompanied by generally cloudy skies,' he said. The increased rainfall is being attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation located over South Gujarat and adjoining areas, along with a north-south trough extending near longitude 87°E and latitude 22°N. These systems are influencing weather conditions across Maharashtra and are likely to bring light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (40–50 km/h) to parts of Vidarbha, Central Maharashtra, and Marathwada. A yellow alert has been issued for these regions. In Pune, early morning showers were reported in several areas, including Kondhwa, Katraj, Warje, and Lohegaon, leading to minor traffic slowdowns though no major waterlogging or damage was reported. Rural and ghat areas also saw significant rain. Nimgiri in Mulshi tehsil received the highest rainfall at 25 mm, followed by Malin (22 mm), Kurvande and Hadapsar (17.5 mm each), and Pashan and Shivajinagar (16.7 mm). Other areas like Bhor (13 mm), Lohegaon (10 mm), and Chinchwad (8 mm) also saw notable precipitation. While the monsoon is yet to make significant progress across the state, these developments indicate the beginning of more active rainfall conditions in Pune and other parts of Maharashtra. Meanwhile, the temperature in Pune dipped below the normal level. As per the official data, the maximum temperature in Pune was 28.4 degrees Celsius, which was below the normal level by 7.3 degrees Celsius. At 22.6 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature was also below the normal level by 1 degree.

Guwahati: The flood crisis in Assam continues to be grave, with 21 districts facing severe conditions affecting 6.79 lakh people as of Wednesday evening. In the past 24 hours, two more flood-related deaths occurred — one child in Nagaon district and a man in Cachar district. Defogging operations continue to address health concerns from stagnant water. "Indian Army established emergency drinking water distribution points and provided 5,750 litres of fresh drinking water at a flood-ravaged village, Soibam Leikai Imphal East district, Manipur, ensuring the residents had access to clean and potable water. The unprecedented floods left the local population struggling for clean drinking water," the defence PRO wrote on X, on Wednesday. During Wednesday's high level task force meeting, Union DoNER minister Jyotiraditya Scindia discussed flood conditions with northeastern state leaders. "Reaffirmed the Centre's full support and readiness to assist the affected states. My team at @MDoNER_India also remains fully committed to extend all necessary assistance. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our brothers and sisters in the Northeast continues to be our foremost priority," Scindia wrote on X.

City takes a calming rain check on heat
Bhopal: Showers on Wednesday made the temperature drop a bit more in the city and a possibility of further thundershowers existed for the state for Thursday as well. But the forecast also says that temperature could go up after Thursday in the state. The day temperature in Bhopal on Wednesday was recorded at 33.0 degrees celsius, eight degrees less than the normal mark, while night temperature in the city was 23.4 degrees celsius, four degrees less than the normal mark.
